Root Walk Me Thru Rooting My Eris

OK, so I went to the store today and I can upgrade at a discounted price on only the 3g android phones. Not a bad thing considering I am NOT wanting to pay 250-300 bucks for a 4g phone. I understand that they are bigger better and faster BUT, one I don't have that kind of money and can't see paying that for a phone. Yes I'm willing to pay 200 but not 250, sorry I have to draw the line somewhere. I'm torn between the fascinate, Inc2, and X2. The Inc2 is so freaking lite that I don't even know I have a phone in my hand. The X2 is bigger but they both have the same processor so there's not to much to draw me from one to the other there. The bigger draw though is that a 4g phone has a ton more memory. I don't know I may break down and do a 4g phone in the long run but I'd have to wait until the end of the month.

nope... not the same at all :)

*my* personal choice of the ones you listed would be the fasinate because: inc2=not yet permanent rooted and moto=encrypted bootloader(no completely AOSP roms cause you wont be able to change the kernel).

but your needs will differ... if youve no intention of rooting any of those 3 would be a good choice :)

tho i thot id point out... the lg revolution and the thunderbolt are both 4g phones that meet your $200-$250 price requirement ;) jus' sayin' :D

From what I understood from the manager, all 4g phones start at 250. I'm not sure if wal mart, target or costco/sam's club will allow me to early up, but I have recently found out in all of this that they offer better deals on androids. Worth a shot don't you guys think? I know at one point the droid x was 98

sure... worth a shot. but i think bc is right... youll prolly have to wait until your contract is up before you can get a phone anywhere but verizon.

id also check into what happens if you have prollems. if you signe a contract and buy a phone at wall mart do you still have verizon support? can you still walk into a store and get service?

im under the impression that walmart(and prolly other places too) while use the verizon networks and towers are not really verizon. but i could be wrong...

like i said, make sure you check into it,its not worth payin less for a phone if you have to deal with crappy customer service after.

Costco and sam's have verizon kiosks in then, while wal mart and target are just like the kiosks in the mall that can somehow give you a better deal than the store. It's worth it to treat the theory. I keep cutting my fingers on this damn screen, I don't know if they can hold out till the end of the month for a 4g phone. I just know I'll be mad when and I'd the bionic comes pour and my friend gets it.

Isn't it true that if you are upgrade-eligible at Verizon, you are eligible at all affiliates?

Verizon will let you upgrade when you hit twenty months into a two year contract. It used to be that they would let you upgrade after 13 months, with a special deal at 20 months - which is why I am upgrade eligible now at almost 18 months - but all contracts since January now must wait until 20 months to upgrade.

There is always getting a feature phone cheap until the end of the month. I always keep my old phone when I get a new one so that I have an emergency replacement until I can decide on a replacement - so I will be keeping my Eris for that reason when I do upgrade in August. (Right now I have my old Moto q9 in a drawer, ready to get activated...)

i agree i never get rid of old phones... i got my inc,and my eris if somethin happends to my TB. heck,in a worse case,i could always go back to my old env touch

i think CS had a great idea with the cheap screen protector. that would be a really economical way to go to the end of the month. if you want to try and squeek by a few more months... one word: "craiglist" :D you could get anything from a free to $20 old school flip phone to a $50-$150 droid 1,eris,ally,or incredible. ive seen all those phones go in that pricerange. just make sure you either activate it,or do an esn check before handing over non-refundable cash ;)

I guess I'm spoiled now on android and I won't go back to my old env touch. I'll probably go get the inc 2 on wednesday. I have what 30 days or 15 days if I'm not happy with it to take it back and choose something else right? That will allow me to decide if I want to keep a lesser phone because I'll actually be able to play with it non stop instead of standing around a Verizon store. The Charge seems like the phone I would go with other than the TB if and when I do the 4g upgrade. I like the fact that the TB has a kickstand. I would so be watching movies on netflix with it. Anyways, yeah the 20 months thing is right and on the primary line it's 18 months with a 20$ fee added to the cost of the phone. Me I'm just shy of the actual 24 months like we have already talked about and with doing it a couple weeks early I still have to pay the extra 20$. Now the screen protector is a good idea only I've got some and when I had one on it before the screen wasn't very responsive at all which is why I'm shying away from it.

So....uh Scotty....wanna loan me or allow me to buy your old Eris? :D Unless you are willing to part with your Inc?:)

I'd ask, but I think that you're right - I think that it's no longer 30 days, and is something like 14 or 15 days.

I am pretty sure that I will go Inc 2 in August, if nothing else like it comes out first. Having played with it in the store, with all of the extra crap VZW puts on the store models (i.e., automatic task killer), it's fine for me - the right size, good performance, and I only care about rooting if there is something wrong with stock. That doesn't seem to be the case with the Inc2.

I like the fact that the TB has a kickstand. I would so be watching movies on netflix with it.

Strangely, though, the kickstand cannot be used at the same time you are charging (unless you build yourself a dock or cut a small hole in the table) - the kickstand puts the charging port on the table surface.

Now the screen protector is a good idea only I've got some and when I had one on it before the screen wasn't very responsive at all which is why I'm shying away from it.

I've had a Zagg-like screen protector on my Eris since day one and it's just fine - a little more friction than bare glass (as I recall - it's been a long time since I've used the eris without this), but it's definitely responsive. I wouldn't use a device like this without one, unless I knew it was gorilla glass. Just don't get a cheap protector, if you are going to get one.

It's 15 days and I doubt scotty would part with either one. I have two eris's but one has a cracked screen however I wouldn't part with them either. Look in the classifieds forum. You can find some pretty good deals.

I'd still have an Eris to play with. However, the iPhone suddenly looks a lot more attractive - it's the right size, has a beautiful display, plenty of great apps (now even a matching great Tweetdeck client), and, as I said, little to no crapware. And it works just fine with Gmail, Google calendar, Google contacts, etc. Every single app that I run on Android has an equivalent iOS app. I really have to think about this one. Timing may be bad to get an iPhone 4 in August, though. (However, I'd still have my wife's phone update to use if something came up a year down the line...)

yeah... ummm... no. :D

It's 15 days...
also, thot id point out that, unless it has changed since i had my ally, that you cant just play with a phone for 14 days and take it back with with no consequence. true they will allow you to return it,but unless you are exchanging the phone for another of the same phone because of some sort of malfunction not fixable by doing a factory reset or pushing software in the store, they will charge you a $35 restocking fee if you decide its not the phone you want.

my ally sucked the battery down like crazy(50% bug if anyone remembers that... it plauged the eris also),was laggy and constantly force closed stuff. because SO MANY people had returned them,i was able to "sweet talk" my way into simply returning it,and waving the restocking fee. but i did have 3 lines with no contracts to use as leverage ;)

Well, now that Apple finally fixed the crappy notification problem in iOS, maybe I'll just get an iPhone instead. No crapware that way, either.
i dont like apple because of steve jobs and his holier than thou attitude with his market apps, and the fact that its closed source so there is no rooting and roming like there is with android.

however... since you brought it up... :p

apple makes a great product. they pay alot off attention to detail that do make their phones a pleasure to use. if you want something that you wont ever have to root, and will just automatically work, and work well,an iphone would be an excellent choice. depending on how much memory you need(no removeable memory is another thing i personally dont like about apple) you can defiantely get a non-4g iphone in your price range. patience will prolly yield a 4g capable iphone 5 if you consider 4g to be important.

i have an ipod(that i addmittedly like alot  ) and there are actually a couple of iOS apps that dont have an android equiivalent. if you get an iphone check out "skygrid",wich is sort of a streaming news app- you can browse by categories and see instantly all the internet reportings of various topics(my favorite is "mobile" :D) its where i see alot of the reports of new stuff thats comin out.

the 2nd app i long for an android version of is a chipotle app... my sister uses it on her iphone all the time. you can preorder, pay, walk out the door and when you get to the store its waiting up front for you... just walk around that huge line that their always is and pick it up :D

tho since my ipod is an ipod and not a phone,i havent checked it the other way... im not sure if there are any android apps i cant live without with no iOS equivalnet. ill havta check that out :)

i love my TB but have to admit that this is a pretty serious flaw. the evo has its plug on the bottom of the phone, making it quite feasible to watch movies,tv,or whatever while plugged in on the the cute lil kickstand.

id like to meet whomever designed the kickstand placement, and charge port placement, and seriosuly punch him right in the face:eek:;)

seriously... if the port was ANYWHERE else but that side it would be fine,or even if the kickstand opened the opposite way it would be fine.

since i use my phone so much i recently ordered a charging dock(charges a battery by itself) and 3 extra 1700ma batteries for $21.99. now i can watch movies on my lil kickstand and not worry about having to plug my phone in to get thru the day. ill just run it till it dies, and pop in the spare battery ill carry with me and turn it back on

as doogald will point out, this is not really a fix,but an acceptable workaround for me. my battery will last the day with no recharge if i dont watch movies, and if i run a rom other than cm7(ril is not right yet,and the radio drinks the battery like cheap wine )

There are very active jailbreaking options for iOS, easy to do, with lots of apps not available in the app store. Or so I have heard - I haven't needed to jailbreak my iPod Touch, as it works well without.

Nobody knows what the iPhone5 will bring, nor when, but the latest rumors are no 4G yet, a "world phone" for Verizon (and maybe Sprint), and not until some time next year.

I have an upgrade coming in August and I'll wait no longer than the traditional fall Apple iPod event - if they announce a new iPhone5 then, I may decide to wait, but I just may go with the best device I can get then. I don't want to have just the Eris for any longer than I need to.

Laeving aside the root-only apps, Tweetdeck was one, but they finally released an iOS app that looks like the Android version and doesn't crash every time you try to run it. Google Voice I'm not sure about - I think it's still just a web app for iOS. Anything with widgets would be one huge thing missing in iOS. Keyboards - iOS's is very good, but predictions in Swiftkey are fantastic. I like Weatherbug more on Android than iOS.

But, sure, there are a few apps in iOS that I cannot run in Android right now. Netflix (for movie streaming) - I'd need a specific phone for Netflix for Android. I have EyeTV software for one of my Macs that lets me watch live TV or recorded content on iOS over WiFi when I am away from home - that doesn't work on Android, even on a web page (it works on Safari on iOS as well, though not as well as the discrete app.) Instapaper is a great service that is iOS only, but I use Read It Later instead, and that works just as well for me.

Yeah that doesn't make a but of sense for the charging port. I like your idea though of the extra batteries and all. The only apple product that I will probably ever own is an ipod touch. But not until I have a ton of money or the cost of a new one goes down. I found a work around on not paying 300$ for the tb. Sam's club online showed it to only cost me 156.00 after tax for the tb as my upgrade right now. That's with my current plan and everything. I don't know why the verizon store can't do that but oh well. Hopefully today I will be the proud new owner of a thunderbolt. Oh and yes it was at the checkout screen where I confirmed the price. It is rootable right?

I also wanted to say that yes there is the restock fee but if I'm already going to add money to what I am returning to get a different phone, one either I can get them to waive it or just pay it because at that point it's not going to matter to me when I'm spending over 200 bucks. Oh and please don't take this as though I'm being a jerk

Thunderbolt - All Things Root - Android Forums

check out the sticky thread with links to roms and some other info.

the root method right now is via ADB. there are a couple of "easy root" methods that sort of automate the manual root, but some of them are just as prollematic(IMO moreso) than the manual root method.

there are a bunch of links to various root methods, along with a couple videos on setting up adb and manually rooting here: http://androidforums.com/thunderbolt-all-things-root/322897-thunderbolt-rooting-methods.html

Alright ladies and gentlemen my ThunderBolt is paid for and ordered. It just needs to ship and I will be a happy camper. Funny how Sam's club won't match their own online price. Somehow that's against their policy. So instead of having it in my hands now I have to wait for it in the mail. Oh well at least I know it's coming! :D
