Do you use a screen lock?

Otherwise, the only thing possibly stopping him is if he doesn't know that you have an app installed.

You could check out Prey, as it can't simply be uninstalled. However, if the thief immediately pulls the battery from your phone, there isn't an app available that will help you.

I do have screen lock with pattern but just asking the question out of curiosity, it kind of defeats the object of installing these types of apps. Im surprised this has not been addressed by the programmers

There's nothing a programmer can do to let the app run in a phone without a battery. As I mentioned, the Prey app does not allow uninstall - so the programmer for that app has thought of the situation you described.
The battery issue is not my concern because no thief will stael a phone and not try and use it. The other issue is what alarms me (pardon the pun) Just the idea of someone uninstalling an alarm tracking app is incredulous!!

Someone tried it last week and it works. As long as the phone is on, it.installs remotely but not sure if the market uses more than your gmail to associate the device with the market. So doubt it would work after a factory reset. But nor would pin protected apps.

One thing about being rooted on a custom Rom, factory reset only works from recovery

To the contrary. There is an app that you can nbame whatever you like during the install process, so there is not tell-tale name reference to a security programme. On top of it, you can uninstall all installer files after completing the installation. It runs completely in the background and is only accessible when you type your personal security code that you select after running the app first time - this can be 4 or 6 or more digits. It also work with SMS message (updating location commands, siren on/off, erase device and more). Best of all the GPS does't need to run as the app will enable it after receiving the command for location update and turn it off again after replying with the map coordinates. It's around $14 for lifetime. The app is called "theftaware" - just google it.

Did you quote the wrong post? We are aware of some apps that can do what you suggest, but the post you quoted refers to the fact that no programmer can make an application run on a phone that has no battery in it.

In regards to naming it what you like, best not name it something like "Red hot babes" ;)

One more reason I should take the plunge.

Just tried PlanB, and was impressed. Within 5 minutes of clicking 'Install' on my PC, I had an email. The tip of the arrow is pointing to a point less than 20ft from my desk, and that's inside the building!
