Hello everyone,

I've had my Desire HD for a while now. Probably 9 months.
I've read, countless ' rooting ' posts, and I just really do not get how or what I need to do. I see you need to ' Downgrade ' your Android Version now, does this mean like your Software version? As in " HTC SENSE " or what? I'm confused.

When I go into Software information this is what I have:

Now - The phone is " Vodafone AU " branded, it does come up with the Vodafone Logo, but. I got sent a ' unlock ' code which allows me to now use any SIM card in the phone so it is Unlocked to any Network.

What exactly, do I read, to root my device.
What is needed?

I'm sorry if this is repetitive, but I do really want to root it, I want to see it's full potential and I want to see what I can do with it.
Any and all feedback would be great

Rooting is great.. don't sorry if you're confused... you've come to the right palce!

You need to downgrade your software version (not Sense - this is the launcher that runs on HTC phones).

You are on

Android Version
2.3.3

You need to downgrade to a rootable version of the Android (this is usually 1.32, but you don't need to worry about that... it is all explained in the how to I will link later).

Now - The phone is " Vodafone AU " branded, it does come up with the Vodafone Logo, but. I got sent a ' unlock ' code which allows me to now use any SIM card in the phone so it is Unlocked to any Network.

This will mean that, although your phone has Vodafone branding on it, your phone is no longer network locked... this will mean that you shouldn't need a goldcard (SD card that has been modified to trick the phone into allowing you to install non-branded firmware on a branded phone) - don't worry about this either... only explaining it to you... you shouldn't need to make a goldcard!

With Gingerbread ROM's (at least on the DHD), it is not possible to get perm root easily. The way that it needs to be done is to downgrade to an older version of the software - the older version of the software IS rootable.

The reason that there are so many different methods is that as each new version has come out, a new method has been devised in order to downgrade... it generally depends on what version you are currently running on your phone!

Now, It says " TEMP ROOT " first than, Downgrade, Than how to root. Is this the order I do the entire process in? Or do I Downgrade first, Than temp root, than Permroot?


Also - What is the best " ROM " or what not to install?
The reason as to why I will be rooting is:

I'd like to have my device at it's peak performace. I want it to be as fast as an iPhone (IF It could be), and as responsive as anything, also might overclock the CPU (I know, dangerous, but will read about that too). Basically, Faster, Quicker, And smoother.

You'll have to forgive me... I rooted when my phone was still on Android 2.2.1 (Froyo) not on 2.3 (Gingerbread) and I am by no means a guru on any of this. I didn't need to temp root before I could downgrade... I just had to downgrade!

I rooted to get rid of all the Orange branded bloatware rubbish and also because I felt that I wanted as much as possible out of my device as I could get.

As for choosing a ROM... it really is down to personal preference. If you like Sense (that comes with HTC's ROM), then you should go for something like LeeDroid or Android Revolution HD. If you want to try Vanilla Android (a ROM with a similar look and feel to what ships on phones like the Nexus S, then I would suggest CyanogenMod (currently CyanogenMod 7) - this is what I am running.

There are lots of different ROM's out there and the beauty of rooting is that you can change every couple of months (or more often if you want) - it is making my 2 year contract a little more bearable, as it's like having a new toy to play with. When you root, you install ClockWorkMod and this allows you to do backups of your roms... this is worth doing before you flash a new ROM... if anything goes wrong, then you can go back to how it was before you went through with the flash - it has saved my bacon a couple of times!!

That is totally subjective, it depends what you're looking for. I like CM7, it's vanilla Android (none of the sense stuff) and is slick, responsive with good battery life.

Some folk find the lack of sense disturbing though. 2 of the best Sense based ROMs are either LeeDroid or ARHD.

You won't need to overclock if rooted (you can if you want though). With the Quadrant Benchmarking tool, I was getting a score of roughly 1750 on the stock ROM. Using CM7, not overclocked, that shot up to 2100 on average.

Up to you though, there are plenty of options available to you once you're rooted!

I have recently rooted my DHD from 2.3.3 and now loving every bit of it. You will have to downgrade it, temproot and then permroot since your on 2.3.3 aswell.

I have tried couple of ROMs already and at the moment I am on MIUI 1.8.5 which gives you more options to customize your phone than any other ROM if I'm correct. As EP has mentioned earlier, CM7 is a classy ROM aswell and so far the best battery experience I've had with it. But again, it all depends on your own choice.
