ok so i was daydreaming about what the next android update will be like, when i came across this article:13 things we might see with the release of Android 4.0 in Q4 | Android and Me. of course this is pure speculation at this point. but i am just wondering what this holds in the future for what ice cream sandwich roms will look like for the evo. especially now that the source code will be released for the devs this time. i mean if we can get sense 3.0 and ice cream sandwhich into a rom, that would be amazing! i hope we can end this year with root access for gingerbread and get ice cream sandwich as well.:D

according to the article. yes. it says that google promises that any device that already has gingerbread can be able to handle the next update. i cannot wait for this to happen. these next set of roms that will be coming out at the end of the year should be truly amazing.
The problem will arise if, and I reiterate if, htc decides to skin Ice Cream Sandwish with Sense 3.0.

As you may know, htc have stated that the Evo 4G will never see an official OTA that includes Sense 3.0 because they say the phone hardware isn't up to the task - which isn't true because there are custom ROMs out now that use Sense 3.0 and my Evo handles them perfectly. The only drawback I've seen is that the Sense 3.0 ROMs are huge compared to those that use Sense 1.0.

If I remember correctly, Google have said that, starting with Honeycomb, phone manufacturers are no longer allowed to skin Android. The best part about this is we'll see upgrades sooner because we won't have to wait for the manufacturers to skin the OTA's before pushing them to our phones.

Some of you may remember what Motorola did to the Cliq XT owners. Moto kept promising upgrades.. and kept promising. Finally Motorola came back and said "sorry, skinning the upgrade (motoblur) is more trouble than it's worth so the Cliq XT will not see any more upgrades." Imagine that, no more upgrades just because the manufacturer has trouble applying their own skins.

Sadly, Sprint have said that the Evo 4G goes EOL in October. That's sad because if htc doesn't skin Ice Cream Sandwich there would be a good chance of us getting that OTA upgrade.

Thank goodness for the ROM dev community, eh? :)

I wasn't a miui fan either..then I gave the stable version another go..and I must say, after you theme it out and get it looking less like an iPhone, its actually really nice...fast,nice features and stable as ****...but I never stay with one rom long.....flashaholics anominus...lol yes I know I spelled it wrong on purpose..

i just hope that this is bigger then the hype that was gingerbread. that was a joke.

I must agree partially....gb is a very nice and fast rom to use as a base. I mean, come on.....FROYO...froyo is garbage. Lol my girls optimus m runs froyo...not impressed at all...I guess for crappy Droid like the huewei and the optimus its OK but froyo on a GOOD Droid....absolutely not.lol

I think he was referring to the OTA Gingerbread for the EVO, which was lame. Rooted version of gingerbread is very nice :D

Cite please. That is not true. We will still have Sense, MOTOBLUR, etc. You do know that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has Touch Wiz 4.0 don't you?
DailyTech - Android 3.0 "Gingerbread" Launches Q4, Will Kill Off OEM UI "Skins"

"Another drastic change in Android 3.0 is that Google is killing off third-party user interface shells like Motorblur and HTC Sense, by offering a faster, superior alternative. The new built-in UI is reportedly similar to that seen in the Gallery app in this clip [removed, it attached a video] with fluid animations and a photobook sort of feel to it."

Now, take into consideration that this article is more than a year old.

I don't see Sense going anywhere but only time will tell. Who wants 50 different phones from various manufacturers all with the same UI?

With Google+ launching it would make perfect sense to stop supporting things like sense that make it easier to sync multiple social networks to your device. They can offer you their own version with the ability to sync those and create a Google+ profile and blah blah blah. The Android market has become large enough that its a perfect place to help get a project like that off the ground.

No matter what happens there, as long as we can continue to flash custom roms and the devs keep making them, I'm satisfied.
