if you use it,definately pop back in and give us your thots. it should leave you with the permanent patched hboot that a few of us have allready flashed.

im sure when its completely ironed out it will be plug and play simple,and being an hboot exploit should not affect any data you have.

best thing is those who take the GB OTA despite all the warnings will still be able to root(or those that simply purchase the device with GB on it)

in a couple days ill unroot and try it,and then prolly in a week or so archive most of the "rooting methods" thread

in a way it makes me a little sad... while i do believe this method will be 100% better and safer for most folks, rooting your device with an old school ADB,sneeky exploit method makes you feel like youve really accomplished something when your done. its an experience im glad ive had.

I can't wait to hear how it works, now those "on the fence" people who have been scared off by ADB or having to actually read a thread for instructions should be able to take the dive. I can feel your pain scotty now when someone screws up makes a mistake when messing with things they shouldn't be they may need to learn ADB before getting their phone working again.

yes and no... it is the new GB bootloader,but it doesnt break the root method. it is likely a different version number simply because its been changed to include htc unlock support.

what has killed the manual root method,is an exploit(gingerbreak exploit if you want to google it) that has been fixed in google source code. turns out it was not only a good doorway for gaining root access,but it was also a pretty major security flaw

yeah that was definately easier than manually rooting. tho not near as fun,ill also venture to say

so in prepration,i flashed the mr2 ruu in its entirety(so i could watch the perm patch hboot block the bootloader flash ),then fastboot flashed my eng bootloader back. i then finally flashed the stock 1.04.0000 s-on bootloader in hboot and was back to 100% stock

when you first download the software from revolutionarys site,a form pops up for you to enter your pc OS(linux or widows),your model,hboot,and serial number. it spits out a beta key. make sure you write this down or copy/paste it to a text document in case it disapears before you need it(i was glad i did)

then you,just extract the files and click the "revolutionary" application inside and run it. a command window pops up,and is "waiting for device". plug in the phone in cahrge mode and assuming you have working adb/fastboot drivers,it spits your serial number back and asks for your beta key. type it in. once its accepted,it goes thru some stuff,boots to fastboot,reboots fastboot,then asks if you want to download clockwork. i told it yes for sh*ts and giggles. it then tells you "success!" and the command window disapears. i was hoping to copy and paste it for you guys,but it left of its own accord before i could

assuming you want to run rooted stock firmware,at this point you just reboot,move the superuser app to your sd card,go back to recovery and flash it. thats it. just flash a file in recovery. no adb,no cutting and pasting. your other option would be to flash the custom rom of your choice.

i spent 10 times more time putting my phone back to stock in prepration for this than it did to actually root with it,lol. it was quick and easy. no downgrades,no outdated upgrades,just download,run,plug in,tpye in beta key and bam! youre done.

my only criticism is that its not well doccumneted at this point. if you were completely new to rooting,you might not be quite sure what to do,but in alpha/unrevo's defense,this IS a developer only beta version. im sure they will get it cleaned up and better documented for mass public release when that time comes.

last and not leas,a couple pics for you guys:

if you were scared of the manual root this is for you. it leaves you with a safe,permanent hboot,and automatically adds your recovery if you want it to. you can even root your current,stock rom and not lose any data or setup.

at some point ill update the rooting methods thread,and maybe add a step by step. i really wanted to flash the newes cm7 after all this,but im tired and 5am comes early so that may have to wait until tomoro.

last and not least,i do want to commend everyone that stepped up and manually rooted the last couple days,despite the fact that this was coming... i hope you did enjoy the experience after it was over. if it was the most terrible experience of your life,i do apologize,i hoped and suspected this was coming,but had no concrete info. i promise i wouldnt have held out on ya if id know for sure it was coming this soon

it was rediculously easy.

i actually plan to restore a stock recovery and let myself OTA to GB. this is a permanent patch hboot(if i wasnt clear on that) and it will block the hboot flashing just like the patched 1.04.0000 that weve been using. so warm... so snuggly

I just did this (actually about to move the su app to the SD card)

I can't believe how easy this was.. reminds me of the unrevoked process for the Incredible. These guys are flippin geniuses.

What I did differently was open the program from the command shell, so it didn't close out afterwards.

Also, the phone has to be in USB debugging mode, HTC sync should be uninstalled prior to running, and HTC's fastboot drivers installed (explained here: public:revolutionary [RootWiki]

Scotty you are one dedicated person. Just looking at the things you had to do to unroot makes it too much work for me to try this out.

I used unrevoked for the incredible, and then manually rooted the bolt. I actually like manually rooting. It was fun, I learned some new things, and have a better understanding of how the rooting process works for this phone.

Unrevoked/revolutionary is a good tool for beginners and everyone says you should at least read the manual root process so you know what it is accomplishing. I agree with that now.

I also know most new users will see a simple root method and go blind, and not read into what it does or how, just like i did for the incredible

BTW who uses CWM anymore? That's so last month.

I'm no beginner when it comes to the root game, been here since my Droid Eris days all the way to my Droid X. But for some reason every time I go to put in the beta key it says invalid key and for the life of me and no matter what I try I can't figure out if it's something I'm doing wrong or something wrong on their side. Anyone got any ideas?

Been toying with the idea of trying the manual root process but could never find the time or enough cajones. Anyhow, being a noob to rooting, I caved and took the revolutionary route. I was successful with two minor issues.

1. Had a problem entering the beta key. I finally copied and pasted it from the revolutionary screen and it worked. Still don;t know what I was doing wrong.

2. Small scare, unexpectedly lost communication to the device between the first and second fastboot. Noob mistake, make sure pdanet is disabled before starting this process! To resolve, I killed the pdanet on my pc, rebooted the phone, made sure the device showed up in ADB and took another crack at it. This time with no issues.

Thanks to the Revolutionary folks, Scotty for his dedication confirming this works and everyone else involved for making this a seemingly bullet proof process

mostly the first 2,prolly a lil more of the 2nd i enjoy helping folks here,and i do thuroughly enjoy all the crazy testing i do. it always makes me giggle when i find new experiments to try
