Help Can you help me please?

Hi, I'm new here- I've had an Andoid Acclaim since April and although I'm getting the hang of it I can't figure out a few things. My problem is regarding the volume of notifications, facebook messages in particular. There are times that I want these muted, it's distracting to those around me at work, etc. So I've turned down under settings & sound-notifications, media & alarm but it still blasts when someone sends me a message.
So..... could someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong or what I need to do to fix this?
I'd really appreciate your help, thank you so much.
