Help turning phone on and of

i normally leave my phones on all day and night i never really shut the phone off. however iv never had a phone that does quite as much as my commando. the "smartest" phone ive owned was the blackberry. is it recommended to turn my phone off at night? or is it ok to leave the phone constantly on. like does it hurt the phone to NOT turn it off?

I shut mine down at night most of the time, while I'm charging. I know that laptop batteries last longer if you charge them while they're turned off. I would guess that it's the same with a phone battery. If you charge it while the phone is running, it generates more heat and that's bad for the battery.

In the case of a phone, the heat load while the display is off is low, so it might not matter as much. At any case, I prefer to start it up fresh everyday, with the idea that anything that doesn't need to be running will be turned off for sure.

Do you find 3G toggling saves much battery?

to really answer that question I'd have to really try to replicate the same conditions with it on and off, its really hard to determine cause each day the usage of the phone varies from one extreme to another. If I were to guess it would probably save about 2% to 7% (sync off) just from the varies apps that want to poll the internet ie the weather widget etc. from locations of good 3g to areas of bad 3g over a few days (depends on what widgets you have running that need 3g). I have tested the battery with it off and very little phone usage, I've gotten it to run 167 hrs till 35% battery left.

Edit further testing done.

3G Data turned off phone light usage battery 93% at 38 hrs 10 mins
3G Data left on " " 93% at 12 hrs 31 mins
just from this unscientific test, battery life with data on is reduced by approx. 2/3

Thanks for your trouble. I'm generally in an area of constant 3G coverage so it never has to expend extra energy searching for it. I think that does make a difference. I remember when 3G was first out how it killed battery like 4G does now. I'm sure by the time 4G is fully deployed we'll have much better battery life. Might even pick up a 4G device by then. ;)
