Hello everyone,

The new Sandisk Mobile Ultra SDHC cards are out. So I've come up with the question: Do we really need to have up to 30 MB/sec?

I've heard plenty of people say their 32gb with a class 2 or 4 rating is sufficient. But also, many have written reviews on Amazon and such saying this speed is slow. Money is not a problem I want the best. But if there's no need in paying extra then I won't.

I plan to use it for 1080p video, photos, apps, and lots of music. The device will be Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4g touch.

A couple of thoughts and one mistake to point out Notice above that your link to the sandisk.com promo is missing the "H" in http, so my browser says that it doesn't know what to do.

As to the question of the question on whether we need it or not is simply a matter of choice i think. If the card is not living up to the hype then that's a different story. Have there been any benchmark tests by cnet or any other well known and respected sites?

i notice a difference on a Sony mini camcorder that only uses Memory Stick PRO Duo, the HG card ( HX) card is clearly and noticeably an advantage.

satellitez, I've found anything less than a class 6 for recording 720p video results in choppiness, and out of sync audio. I'd a class 2, 16GB in my handset and I got rid of it after about a month as it wasn't really suitable for anything I wanted it for.

I've got one on order, intended to use it on my SGS II. However, it looks like microSDXC cards won't work on the device without modification. I just tried to mount a known good microSDHC formatted with exFAT (the file system officially supported for SDXC); the SGS II wouldn't recognize it.

It's probably just a matter of installing a driver or kernel mod. If I can't find one, I can always use the microSDXC to replace my existing 64 GB USB thumb drive until someone comes up with a mod.

On edit: It's lunchtime Friday, and I just got the card. As expected, the SGS II doesn't recognize the native exFAT filesystem the card is factory-formatted with. However, the SGS II happily reformatted it to FAT32.

I just ran SDTools on the card; 18 MB/s read, 6.6 MB/s write.

Really? What card/brand?

My Class 2 Sandisk card writes at 5.5MB/s which is well in excess of what is required for even 1080p recording in my SGSII. Recording videos of the same scene in 1080p on after another and saving one to internal SD and one to the Class 2 shows no difference whatsoever.

IMO might as well shell out the extra cash and go with a mobile ultra sandisk. I'd hate to be upset with a class 4 or 6 and have to go buy a faster one on top of that.

Yet still my original question remain unanswered. Do we really need 30mb/sec write speed? I mean, what does the epic 4g touch write speed. Maybe the card outdoes the phone. Thanks.

No -- I'm talking about the SanDisk 64GB Mobile Ultra microSDXC card, which SanDisk says can handle reads at 30 MB/s. Not that I expected that kind of speed in my SGS2; it's one of the most powerful phones on the market, but it's no PC.

To me, the speed isn't all that important; what's important is that:

• We finally have something bigger than 32GB for our mobile devices.
• Existing Android/WinMo devices that support microSDHC cards support microSDXC cards with only a reformat.

On edit: I've looked at the thread again, and realized that it was created for the ultra microSDHC, not the ultra microSDXC. Both cards were launched at the same time, and I got the two confused. Sorry for taking this thread off the original topic.

However, for this discussion, there shouldn't be much difference because both cards claim to handle 30 MB/s reads. Also, microSDHC and microSDXC are electrically identical; the only difference is that the latter is based on the exFAT filesystem instead of FAT32. So by reformatting the microSDXC to FAT32, I'm basically turning it into an extra-large microSDHC card.

I'm concerned that the speed is too high for my new Epic 4G Touch. I ended up getting it before researching it fully because of the price. It'll be here in a day or two and I'm wondering if I should just ship it right back and get the Sandisk and format it. At least the Sandisk claims it's for phones (among other things) while the Komputerbay seems to be geared more towards cameras.

Note that the card you mention is SDXC, not microSDXC, so it probably won't fit in your device. That's one of the reasons it's so inexpensive compared to the SanDisk microSDXC -- 64GB SDXC has been on the market a lot longer than microSDXC, so prices have had time to come down.

As far as I know, there are only two 64GB microSDXCs on the market right now; the SanDisk, and the KingMax. Amazon lists both in the $160-$165 range.

Bah. Reading comprehension fail.Well thanks for clearing that up. I was wondering why there was such a huge price difference! I have gift cards to Best Buy that can order the Sandisk so I'll just use that. It's slightly more - 199 but I can turn in my old 3GS for 150 bucks, so the old phone might as well serve a purpose.

I did notice that Komputerbay has one too but it could just be a variation on the branding of the Kingmax.
