The Justice Department filed a complaint on Wednesday to block AT&T's proposed $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile, a deal that would create the largest carrier in the country and reshape the industry.

I couldn't agree more with the Government on this. They should of nuked MaBell from orbit to be sure it was dead back in the da,. but seriously wireless prices in the US are high enough as it is. And who cares about them bringing back some call center jobs. They aren't all that and 5k isnt that many. Not worth letting them get away with this.

Couldn't agree more. This is excellent news for the consumer.

Competition = Better pricing, better products, better advancement in technology for the consumer.

No. Absolutely not!

I absolutely do NOT support this buy out.

If AT&T can effectively reduce competition, then it will only be bad for AT&T customers. Prices will only go up -- even as costs go down. Why? Because there isn't enough competition to force prices to go down.


It's how a competitive market works. If there are a lot of sellers of orange juice, then the price of orange juice drops to the lowest point possible -- such that all orange juice suppliers can still make a living.

If there is only one orange juice supplier than the price goes up to whatever the supplier wants to charge. After all, where else are you going to go to buy?

That's why we have antitrust laws.

There's no such thing as a "free market" when it comes to publicly owned property. The spectrum & some of the property owned for the towers are owned by the public, and controlled by the FCC.

I seem to remember an ArsTechnica article some weeks back where in something unrelated, AT&T admitted that it could build out its network to get similar coverage for about $3.2 Billion. About a tenth the cost of buying T-Mobile.

Obvious answer: to consolidate power and eliminate competition.

AT&T might spin it as: "we have more subscribers now". But that really is just another way of saying they eliminated a competitor and are closer to being able to abuse customers any way they want with impunity.

Study the history of monopolies. Nothing good comes of them. Or if any good comes of them it is vastly outweighed by the bad.
