the age old task/app killer, necessary on E4GT?

I am still quite new on these forums and have read so many things regarding task killers. I have been under the impression that have have not been necessary since android 2.2

I recently purchased this phone and noticed Samsung has their own app loaded into the phone for killing tasks. So this got me thinking are they necessary?

I recently tested out Mobo task killer and noticed many discrepancies with apps that were running. The Samsung app said none were running and the mobo version listed quite a few.
Should we be using these? Also is juice defender really able to help get some more out of ur battery life with this phone?

Not too sure about the app killer question. From what I have read you really do not need it on this phone.
JuiceDefender is a good app and you really should read the docs to make sure you get the most from it's use. Using JuiceDefender with the defaults settings does help me with getting better battery life. This also depends what you use and how you use your phone.

It could be that the Samsung app is only listing running apps while the Mobo app is listing running and cached apps. Listing cached and running apps in the same list is what leads many people into thinking they have a rogue app or apps simply won't die. You are correct in assuming that a task killer is no longer needed and I explain why here: Why you don't need a task killer

The Task Managers/Killers provided by the manufacturer are a bit different than many of those available from Market, etc. The "evil" ones, the ones that have stirred up the controversy among experts and casual users alike, are those that don't allow much in the way of configuration as to how they stop background services.

One of the biggest buggaboos about those bad ones is that they cause terrific resource drain by instigating service start and stop loops, wherein the target app is stopped along with its supportive service(s) and those services are demanded by the system to restart over and over again. Battery life suffers as well as overall performance.

Some users of those type of Task Killers have success because they just happen to have the right combination of app/widget configuration that is compatible with them. That's a difficult target to achieve and one that can be avoided by simply letting the system and kernel do its job. Android is not Windows; we don't need to mess with the running system, although it is prudent to clear the app caches by hand now and then, unless you want to supply an app to the system which does that in the background at set intervals.

Rebooting with cache cleaning is about all we need as far as maintenance goes to keep Android running as designed. That and being careful about apps and widgets we keep running (many of those weather widgets are hell on wheels as far as resource drain, for example).

As a long time user of task management in Android, I find the one Samsung included to be great for the novice user, because it won't let you kill important processes. I definitely feel its needed regardless of what anyone says. Sometimes I forget to kill my browser when I'm done with it, and it drains the battery without a doubt! I can feel the phone getting hot in my pocket, then I kill it, and problem solved. It also takes longer to charge if you have things running. So I say yes, use the included task manager. Its fool proof.
