Root Best ROM at the moment?

So I'm getting a bit tired of CM7, don't get me wrong it's very stable and quick but the battery life is a major downside. Now that I want to always have mobile internet on I want a rom where the battery life is great.

I remember on my old desire I had a rom, forgot the name but the battery life was so good it would last easily over a day with mobile internet on, the full works etc.

So please recommend me a rom and I'll check it out.

I always thought that CM7 had the best battery life of most of the ROMs, I have gone 2 days on my battery whilst using 3G etc. (I just think that having sense or something similar on top of android is using more battery, but I don't know if that's true or not.)

Have you tried changing the kernel? I use Lordmod's CM kernel and the battery is fantastic.

Edit: Forgot to add the link to the kernel - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1085725

I've not really had any issues with CM7 (not that I have mobile data on very often... usually somewhere I can get WIFI), but CDPlant's advice on changing the the kernel is the way to go.

I'll check out the kernel later on today. But what is with all these new roms, android revolution, rcm etc they both have a user base that is faaar greater than CM7.

If you're going by the threads on XDA, yes they do. Cyanogen have their own site where they make their ROMs available though so their threads on XDA aren't as popular: CyanogenMod | Android Community Rom based on Gingerbread

A lot of folk use the CM Nightlies as opposed to the stable releases so the CM stable release threads don't get as much traffic.

Having used both Cyanogen and Sense based ROMs, Cyanogen is LOADS stabler than anything else out there (for me anyway) and LorDmod's kernel is a massive improvement over the stock CM offering. It's up to you though, you have root so there's no harm in experimenting and finding a ROM you're comfortable with :).

One of the joys of rooting your phone is the ability to change your rom at will... just remember to do a backup of your current rom before you do any flashing - this can save your bacon if it all goes wrong!! :D

I had a look at the kernal but have no idea how to flash it. It has bfs, cfs etc with cfs being the best. At the moment I have cm 7.0.2 so can someone just quickly run through the steps to get cm7.1 and the kernal loaded on? Thanks.

Im currently using BlackIce modded CM 7 rom and its fantastic. It uses LordModUE kernel which is great for battery life apparently ive noticed a big difference from stock.

Also use battery calibration tool from market once u flash a new rom. Its great. it wipes battery stat file without recovery being needed.
Simply charge to 100% click calibrate battery in app, let it drop to 0% and then charge to full again

Do you have ROM Manager installed? You can download the latest CM7 from within ROM Manager. CM 7.0.2 is pretty old though so it might be best to do a full wipe and install cleanly from scratch. If you want to do that, there's a guide here.

Just make sure you back everything up with Titanium before you start.

I tested out rcmix and android revolution, yeh they look nice but looks arent everything then I went ahead and downloaded cm7.1 just so clean and basic. I installed the kernal but just a question what radio is needed for this rom?

I'm running with 12.62.60.27_26.13.04.19_M at present, but anything dated above 12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2 should be fine for CM7. There are a list of all the radios here.

What's your current radio?

I just checked in the about phone section and this is what I have:

12.86b.60.140.eU_26.03.02.15_M3

on a side note for some reason I rarely get a 3g connection its always on H, anywhere I go. How do I make to stay on 3g?

From what I've read elsewhere on here, H is supposed to be like 3.5g, so I wouldn't worry about that

From what I gather, that's a very old radio (the one the phone was released with). You might benefit from flashing a newer one.

Also, don't forget to calibrate your battery after a ROM flash, it's not essential, but certainly recommended.

Chan_B - just found this

In order of speed from slow to fast:
G (GPRS)
E (EDGE)
3g (3g)
H (HSPDA)

This came from the following thread - http://androidforums.com/nexus-one/52086-3g-sometimes-slower-than-edge-what-h-mean.html - so you really shouldn't worry that you are getting H instead of 3g... it's a good thing!!

EDIT - if you look a bit further down the thread I've linked above, you'll also see this:
The "H" stands for HSPA (High Speed Packet Acess) or 3.5G. Basically, 3G on steroids.

how do you check if you have en s-off? I got into bootloader and first line says ace pvt ship s-off which means it is radio s-off? Does this mean I am ready to flash a radio?

Think Ive messed up my phone now, tried to flash radio, went onto usb fastboot but there was an error in cmd so now when I try to turn phone on it is stuck in the cyanogenmod screen

now here is the thing I deleted the rom off my sd card and havent got any to do an install

please help!

There's some info on flashing a radio properly here. Read, read and read it again, then watch the video in the XDA thread to make sure it's done properly.

What exactly did you do to get to the stage you're at now? If you're getting that far and can see the Cyanogen logo, I'm 99.99% sure you're recoverable. If there had been any major damage, the handset wouldn't even switch on.

ok now I have officially messed up my phone was in recovery and went to apply an update.zip which took me to clockwork mod v2.xxx which I had from my old desire. I cant even select the zip files, can only use the volume and power buttons

edit: I now went into recovery again and it is back to v5.0.2.0

I tried to follow the quick flash package, that booted my phone into the fastboot, and showed error on cmd so I closed the cmd and tried to restart my phone. Did that and its just stuck on the cm screen going around.

If you're in clockwork, you can mount the phone as a USB Device to the PC via the mounts and storage menu. Download the ROM via the thread I linked to here, mount the phone as a USB Device, then copy over to the root of your SD Card. You should then be able to flash it again no problem.

How much battery do you have left btw? Might be best to turn off and charge for a bit if you have less than 40%, as the handset won't charge in clockwork.
