Help Switching from LG Ally to Droid Charge

Hi all!

I'm new to the forum and just had a quick question.

Right now I have the LG Ally and I will be getting the Droid Charge in about a week or so..

My question is this: I have a 2GB SD card in my Ally that has a bunch of pics & videos that I want to move to the Charge, since the Charge comes w/a 32GB SD card. I know I could just swap out the 32GB & keep using my 2GB, but I'd rather be able to have the extra memory & was wondering how I could move all my pics/vids/music/ringtones from that SD card to the 32GB one? Is there an easy way other than trying to email everything to myself?

I know I will probably have to re-download some apps, like my UberTwitter for Android & Plume etc, when I get the Charge..am I correct?

Sorry for sounding like such a newbie, but this will only be my 2nd Droid phone after having a BlackBerry forever..oh and I will never go back lol

1) If you have a computer, they sell adapters that will allow you to plug in the microSD card. Then you can transfer all the files from the 2GB card to the computer, then plug the 32GB card in and transfer the files from the computer to the 32GB card.

2) DONT BUY THE DROID CHARGE. Please, for the love of everything good and holy, steer VERY clear of it. It's a problematic phone that Verizon and Samsung are not doing anything to address.
No offense intended at all, but you dont sound like the type of person that wants to deal with putting custom ROMS on your phone to try and fix the problems it has. If you're looking at 4G, the Bionic (while still having a few issues) is a much better overall phone, and Motorola seems to do "ok" with updating any issues they find. Even if it's slow to update, they do push them.
Some of the very simple issues are these:
1) Data connection drops randomly, regardless of your coverage area. You either need to toggle airplane mode a few times, restart the device, or turn off 4G, then turn it back on. If you dont care about 4G, dont worry, 3G is a nightmare as well. My wife can get a 3G signal 99% of the time where my phone will refuse to connect to 3G. Basically it's 4G or nothing.
2) Data not your forte? Dont worry, Samsung has you covered. Calls drop much more frequently on this device. If you do manage to get a call, you've got a 33% chance that the voice on the other line will be sporadic. Meaning you will hear 1/6th of the words. 33% of the time it will be a clean call. And the remaining 33% you will get a lovely ULTRA loud static buzz randomly.

The ONLY strong points of this phone: 4G (when it does connect) and the absolutely gorgeous screen.

Just a word of warning. Good luck on the file swap/transfer though, regardless of which route you take, that part still works

Thanks for the info but I've already bought the Charge off of Ebay...so I'm gonna be stuck w/it I guess I can always go iPhone in August when I'm due for upgrade if the Charge is as bad as you say... but for now... yeah...stuck

Thanks for the info about transferring files...I think I have one of those microSD card readers that came w/the memory card I got for my Sony Cybershot, but not sure...

In any event, how do I transfer the files once I get them on my PC?

Hopefully you have better luck than the rest

Basic rundown, once the 2GB card is plugged into the computer, make a folder on your desktop. Drag all the files from the card to that folder on your desktop. Unplug the 2GB card. Plug in the 32GB card. Then drag all the files from the folder on your desktop to the card.
You can delete the folder you created on your desktop after you have finished transferring all your files.

Thanks so much!!!! I will try that Do you happen to know if the adapter that comes w/the Sony Cybershot (since it uses a diff kind of memory card than most digital cameras) will work for a microSD card or do I need to buy something else?

Without more information it's impossible to accurately answer that. It's likely that it will not work though because MOST Sony devices use their proprietary "memory stick pro" and all that. However, you'll just have to see if the microSD card fits in the adapter or not.

Hit up your local Best Buy or electronics shop and tell them what you're trying to do and they'll be able to point you to a memory card reader that will work. It shouldnt be more than $10-$20, if it is, then they're probably trying to sell you too much. It's a simple device that plugs into a USB port, easy to use, so dont worry about that. It's going to be no different than you taking a USB flash drive and plugging it into a computer. Same concept.

You could use your phone connected to the computer to do all this too, using the phone as a USB storage device and swapping the files that way, but it requires a few steps to accomplish. It sounds like you're not overly familiar with this stuff, so simple may be the way to go. (no offense intended by any means, just trying to help)

Don't believe everything you hear. I went from the Ally to the Charge last May. I love it and have not, I repeat, have not had the issues the replyer above has. I find it fast and reliable. I live in a fringe area and still rarely miss a call or have a garbled call. I use Go Launcher, Go SMS and Go Contacts along with Business Calendar.
You'll love it too.

I also have the Droid Charge. I do think there are a number of issues for many people. Mostly people like it, I think, and I am one of those people, even though some things are limited on this thing. It can feel slow at times, depending on what apps you run. One of them that causes my Charge to get slower and slower and then finally spontaneously reboot or lock up is a wallpaper program that puts different wallpaper on every screen you have. It keeps updating itself with new photos and it eats up more and more memory, something that the Charge seems to be a little bit short of for how much it cost. The GPS sometimes seems like it cannot lock in for me for at least 5 minutes, sometimes 10. But usually it is working well enough. The battery can run down quite fast so if you are able to, you turn off what you are not using, like the WiFi, or the 3G/4G, depending on where you are and what you need. You might only get 2.5 hours if you are watching video on it, I would estimate. Or if your use is very light and you keep the screen brightness turned all the way down, you might go for 13 hours or so. You'll need to buy a car charger for it from ebay, because sooner or later, you are going to need that extra juice. There is lag on most Charges I am sure. That is definitely a minor to moderate to major problem, depending on what you run on the system. The phone is normally not as loud as you'd like it to be, I find, and that sounds very much like some reviews of the Galaxy S2. The screen will look more beautiful than the Bionic. It's a near perfect screen.
