Help with a lagging eris

Okay my best friend and myself always have to have the latest phone.

So we both got Moto droids on it's first launch but the Camera sucked horirbly...
as well as the keyboard was iffy and it was too heavy

2 weeks later we got Eris...but noticed a big difference in the eris and the droid. While the dorid, in my opinion, is big and ugly and too rectangular...it's faster vs a nice looking lighter eris but i understand the processor and fragmentation of the OS and all that Jazz

So then he told me about the Pre plus and we tried it and I love the concept of the OS however I want to come back to the eris because A)lack of apps, B)Call Quality sucks on the Pre plus 3)I love Android and all it's features

Yet when i came back to the eris it's still slow even after i did some update to it(idk what the update was for as it's still on 1.5)

So are there any suggestions as to what I can do about making my phone lag less(5 seconds to open an app or load messages or emails is ridiculous)

and the battery is horrible but i hear I have to "train" it. I don't understand why I would have to train something to not die but idk.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
and please keep the bs & rude comments to yourselves

Sorry for any typos(TYPING SUPER FAST AND I DONT FEEL LIKE SPELL CHECKING) LOLZ

Thanks,

carmen

You can download the SpareParts app. It has speed settings for window and transition animations. It helps some. Some people say not to use an Apps Killer, but Ive found that my phone operates faster when I kill apps. Also you can change out the micro sd to one that operates at a faster speed ( I forget what type its called) but it really speeds things up that have to write to the sd card. let me know if you have any luck. I'm always game for speeding up my Eris

OTD, Any app that can stop apps would fall under your FAQ? So Task Managers/Killers... all that?

I found an app that was still running from a week ago that I hadn't used and backed out of.. granted it was idle and taking like 12k but... any reason it would still be "running"? How do you address those issues? Or are they issues at all?

Ok, just for the record it isn't my FAQ, I didn't write it. I just have it as a source of information for others. :)

Not all apps will "close" when you use the back button. Some have exit/quit options in the menu and will not close at all unless this method is used (Pandora comes to mind). Some will just go idle or in the background when you use the back button and some will close out completely with this method. As far as it being an issue, that would probably depend on the phone, the user and the other apps installed.

What was the app and how did you find out it was "running"?

It was the USB Sync app. I hadn't plugged it in the pc for at least a week. I found it with advanced task manager.

I didn't mean to assume that the FAQ was yours, just that you have it in your sig... I tend to side with the whole concept of Linux doing a good job managing ram and apps/tasks and not needing manual killing. I just wonder if the app that had been sitting was chewing cpu and not idle I wouldn't know of it without a tool like that.

I'm not really sure about that one. I don't sync with a PC so I don't know the app. Unless you are talking about what pops up in the notification bar when you connect the phone to a computer. Then I wouldn't know how you could back out of that one, it just closes up for me when I unmount....or dismount.:)

As far as tools to see what is running, there are a few different file managers, like Astro, that will show you what is going on in the background.

My view on task killers isn't that they are evil or anything. I just have a problem with people telling others that they need or have to have something on their phone. When I picked my Eris I had 3 different guys tell me that I needed to install a task killer and one actually tried to do it for me. I told them I didn't want it and that started a 10+ minute explanation (dumbed down for my benifit ;)) of why I had to have one. When I explained about Android/Linux and how the system functions, more or less, I was met with blank stares. I'm pretty used to that, since there are a lot of guys that don't expect a girl to know anything about tech, but when the same thing happened at Best Buy, Verizon and the first forum I went to it became annoying to me. My phone was running fine, the same as it is now, and I didn't need anything to change that. If people "need" them or want them then ok, but I always suggest people should try to use the phone without first and then go from there. If you start out with one on your phone, then you could be adding problems later on down the line.

Thanks for your explanation, OTD. I would have liked to see you talk those "pros" back down a bit. My VZW guy installed ATK on both my wife and my phones. I read the FAQ and all the other feedback in here about it and I uninstalled it. I think it's fine. I also tried to use Home vs. Sense but found i liked the space and more soft buttons helpful for learning the phone. Especially for my wife...

Thanks again!

Spare parts is a stupid app. All it is is the Animations option and making it faster. The Animations, in my opinion, make my Droid Eris slower. It takes longer to change screens using the back soft key button while having the Animation options on.

Hi Carmen.:) Welcome to the forum.

Ok, so first questions:

What is your free memory right now?
How many apps do you have installed?
How are you closing/exiting apps?

I am pretty similar to jamezelle in the fact that I have a pretty good list of apps on my phone, I use it heavily all day, don't have a task killer and don't have any lag.

How can we check how much free memory I have without a task killer?
