so is this something that all people are expected to do? or only android fans and geeks like us that know to root and follow forums endlessly for fixes?

one of the biggest draws to apple is that make things work. i used to be a huuuuuuge windows fan because i knew how to use it. i've since got a mac and never had to do a single "maintenance" task on it, and it still runs great.

i love android. i loved my OG Droid. but in the course of two years, the hw and sw no longer play nicely together. i can only unlock my phone with the keyboard sliding out. answering phone calls is a nightmare. i'm lucky to send a text without the screen going nuts and typing random crap. i can't use buttons on either left hand side or right hand side of the screen.

no doubt forking over $300 for a gnex will translate into better performance. but at this point, i can only hope it translate into a sustainable device without having to root/wipe/clear. i certainly will know to do this... but i assure you this is not the norm. and no one wants to resort to that option (if they can get passed it with locked bootloaders nowadays).

Nah, not to worry.

The Droid Incredible is almost singular in its app space cache issue (correct me if I worded that wrongly gang, TIA). In contrast - my wife uses an HTC Evo Shift, not rooted. Hasn't done a lick of anything except just use it since about launch week last January - runs way smooth, quick, and has a bunch of apps installed. As time goes by, phone and phone OS technologies keep improving. No need to judge all Android by one model.

~~~~~~
It's possible to get stale or tangled up cache entries on any type of system - this can happen in Android, it can happen in iOS (and does). On Android, a non-rooted user can always square things away by backing up data and apps and contacts and doing a Factory Data Reset. Same thing on an iPhone - Settings > General > Reset. That's exactly why Apple and Android makers put that stuff there.
As for no maintenance actions on your Mac, just give it time. You will find that the occasional reboot will restore speed. By design, virtual memory can get nicely tangled on a Mac and a reboot fixes it.
And if you ever get a bad update from Apple (not at all unheard of, I've had several), the first thing you'll find yourself doing on a Mac is Applications > Utilities (folder) > Disk Utilities > Restore all file permissions. Then boot into single user mode and follow the on-screen instructions to clean up your file system with the fsck (file system check) command.
Every OS gives maintenance tools for a reason. ;)
~~~~~~~

No operating system is perfect - far from it. But for maintenance actions on a modern Android, you don't have any more to worry about that any more than on other OS - and in my personal experience, actually less.

And how do I know about reset fixing things on an iPhone? Because my daughter is still regretting getting an unreliable iPhone (in her experience), that's why. :cool:

So this guy at work loves movies, wants his kids to love the same movies he does, but doesn't want to expose them to excessive profanity, violence, etc. So what he does is he buys his favorite movies, and then "scrubs" them, removing the really bad language, excessive violence, etc.

Anyway, he just comes in and says "Just scrubbed 'Goodfellas' last night."

I said "What's the point?"

:rolleyes:

From Roman Nurik's Google+;

My super fancy "live camera" setup from the previous post on the Design Preview tool... a Galaxy Nexus held upright by a binder clip, taking a 720p video recording of a Nexus S :)

Off topic - is the app loading reeeeeaallllllllyyyyyyyy slow for anyone else?

I thought it was just my troublesome DX, but I often have the app get stuck loading the forum pages, the news pages, etc.. but I have that happen on a lot of apps that are accessing the internet so I chalk it up to my phone being stubborn.

No kidding... that's like watching Goodfellas on FX or TNT. All the good parts are edited out, leaving the viewing public with a strange, unfulfilled experience. The movie wouldn't make sense if one didn't see it on DVD first.

Ah, I don't know. I've been thinking about it. Caleb Hanie did step into a pressure cooker situation last year (NFC title game with no practice reps) and drove down the field for a touchdown twice.

This won't be a Tom Brady situation, but I think he might be able to hold down the fort til Cutler gets back for the playoffs.

Side wager on Hanie's viability at QB? Orton played near Pro Bowl caliber QB last year and lost out to Tebowmania in Denver. He obviously knows your offense...Guarantee he's a better fit, if you end up with him...

i know P3Droid isn't everyone's favorite around here but he and @tfleming223 are hinting the nexus may not be here until around Christmas. If that's the case i don't think i'll be getting the phone at launch. I'll wait for CES to see what's on the horizon.

If Verizon came out and told us that, I'd have a ReZound by the end of today.

Hope his kids enjoy watching the credits at the beginning and the end.. not sure there will be much left between them.

I guess this is my obligatory 'my verizon store said' post....

I went into a store looking at razr and rezounds and asked the rep. He smiled and said they had a meeting monday about it and the district manager said that they are not releasing anything (info not the phone lol), and not saying anything to the stores. He said it isnt an issue with the phone itself, the district manager had one as is business phone.

So i take from this that they either 1 have a supply issue or 2 are sitting on it. I know its no more info, but i figured id post it

Well, a 2 year old smart phone still works as a phone, and if you're considering the computer it should still work for 2 year old tasks.

It sounds like you want a future-proof smartphone, which just isn't possible with the current pace of mobile technology. If/when smartphones reach the point where (like desktops these days) there's a plateau before the next big jump in technology, then they'll last longer. Otherwise, I wouldn't expect it.

No I don't want a future proof smartphone lol. I understand how technology advances. I am speaking of hardware longevity.

A lot of people are complaining of hardware failures i. e. Speakers screens and such. As well as rebooting and other things that shouldn't occur in 1 or 2 years.

Unfortunately he doesn't know it anymore. He left before Martz implemented his flying circus.

I think Hanie might work out. But I wouldn't mind having Orton as a backup, just in case.

It always does for me after a day or so. I literally have to uninstall and reinstall the app every couple of days. Clearing the cache and/or data doesn't even help.:(

Sometimes turning my phone off helps. Generally I get frustrated and use the browser. Though more often than not I get the same thing on my browser.

When my son was younger (pre-teen ish), he liked Eminem and Kid Rock, and I let him listen to them. I've never been a fan of censorship. But some of my friends couldn't believe I didn't buy him the edited versions of the CDs, and that's exactly what I said "What's the point then?" There would have been entire songs with less than 3 words in the entire song. :p

This won't be a Tom Brady situation, but I think he might be able to hold down the fort til Cutler gets back for the playoffs.

To compare his performance in the title game to now would be a poor comparison. When he stepped in last year he had nothing to lose. The expectations were low and the game was already spiraling out of control. This time around there is much more on the line. He is an unrestricted free agent at the end of this year and he is now playing for his NFL career. There is far more pressure to perform now, than last years NFC championship game.

That being said, I think he will do fine if he doesn't try to do to much. We realistically only need to win 10 games to have a good chance at the wild card. While the numbers are a bit old (last year), teams with 10 wins go to the playoffs 86% of the time. I just don't see us losing more than 3 of the next six games on the schedule.

This week vs the Raiders will be a scary game for the Bears with or without Cuttler and the Green Bay game. However, Green Bay may very well be playing all their back ups by then. The other 4 games are easily winnable.

Orton is a good QB and will most likely be starting somewhere next year with the lack luster QB population in the NFL right now. To expect Orton to come into Chicago and do much of anything in an offence he has never played in would be kidding ourselves. If the Bears get Orton, then that's great, but Hanie gives the Bears a much better chance to win. He knows the offence, and if the coaching staff can keep him under control, the Bears should see no issue securing a wild card spot.

The one thing that does scare me about Hanie, is he likes to make plays on his feet and makes risky throws. What we need is a game manager and rely on the other two phases. The teams left on the schedule easily allow for 3 to 4 wins if we don't lose the games for ourselves. What Hanie did at Colorado isn't what we need to for him to do for us these coming weeks.

Lol. I let my daughter (10) listen to most things. I draw the line when I know 'f' is used. And not a fan of her hearing $*it either. Otherwise I think it's better to let her know the words and that she isn't allowed to use them.

yeah i'm starting to think twice about waiting for this phone. i don't think verizon is going to say anything until a few days before the launch though.

At this point I'm waiting until Dec 8th, if Verizon doesn't have the phone or make an announcement by then, then I'm jumping off this boat and figuring out a plan B. :rolleyes:
