I actually prefer nav in portrait mode maybe I'm alone here. I don't need to see that far to the left and to the right I want to see what's in front of me :)

I'm with you 100 percent. Portrait is better for Nav. You want to see upcoming turns, not which roads might be running parallel to you on the left and right.

I'm pretty sure that because the desktop landscape dock was not powered it did not rotate. I'm hoping that it is similar to Moto docks when powered and it brings up landscape mode with a clock/calender/weather/alarm clock type mode as well.

I was thinking the same thing. Of course, that wouldn't make sense for the car dock though. It should not HAVE to be plugged in to allow for landscape mode. As you can see from this image, it is still in portrait.

Why would we have to plug our car dock into the car I wonder? I would rather not have to worry about cables in my car, but I'll plug it in if its necessary I guess. In some cases I suppose it would be essential-- long drives with Nav running etc.

edit: and after looking at the display settings they are exactly the same as previous builds. You can enable/disable auto rotate of course. So perhaps this discussion is all for not and the folks in the demos just never enabled it. Who knows. Its no deal breaker though and I'm done thinking about it :)

They should easily be able to distinguish when the phones in the dock with the pogo pins......I work in the mobile printing business and we use pogos for the same thing to charge in a docking cradle..that's probabyl what the third pogo pin is for. One power one ground and one whatever electrical and software needs to know its docked ......I'm a mechanical Guy lol

I agree. If you take the time to learn which fine tuned settings work best, it needs to still be set that way when you start the camera again. I would hope that is the case with the gnex. It works that way on my D2, point and shoot, and dslr.

Every camera is different and one has to shoot a bunch to learn the best settings. Theoretically, with experience, things become predictable. i.e. you learn what to expect for a given lighting condition and settings combination. It is good when you get good results from the "Auto" setting, and many cameras do. Unfortunately, it looks like the camera app on the gnex needs more work. I'll bet there will be excellent aftermarket apps that work fine. I'll also bet that the gnex hardware is fine and the app just needs fixing.

I will make up my mind when I have one in hand. This isn't a killer for me, but I do expect the camera to be decent. From what I have seen so far, it is currently questionable.

DX defaults to standard settings every time the camera app is closed / openned. Drives me nuts as it defaults to a 8MP picture that has 3 seconds of lag when all I want is a snapshot with a 3MP setting that I can take in less than a second to catch something my kids are doing. Fast shutter lag on the GN is probably the feature I'm most looking forward to. Between the GN camera and my DSLR I plan to get rid of my shapshot camera.

Some comments in random blogs regarding the gnex horizontal dock that made sense to me (sorry if this has been posted elsewhere in this near-60,000 posts thread):

why no HDMI? : Someone said that HDMI transfer requires more than the 3 prongs in the horizontal mode and so would only work through the microUSB port (and thus, only available in the portrait dock)

why didn't it auto go into landscape mode?: Someone said (actually, Kellex) said that the google stock launcher has never done landscape mode (apps do, obviously), only dev launchers.

Sound true or no?

It might be worth repeating to avoid more disappointments, but one of the two Corporate VZW stores I went to yesterday said the GNex was delayed beyond 12/8 with no indication of a new release date. The sales guy I spoke to said they had heard earlier in the day that the launch was delayed again and when he looked at another sales guy, that guy nodded and said they didn't give a reason for the delay or a new date.

What can I tell you other than both these guys looked & sounded sincere. I tend to believe them.

Do you also believe in geocentric theory rather than heliocentric theory? Sales people usually know nothing. Think about a car dealership. When you walk in and you ask them about a certain car you've been eyeing, and you know all the spec's by heart because you've been fed insider info, and then this idiotic sales person tells you something completely different, and the specs that were fed to you are right there, written on the car. Are you still going to view that salesperson as credible? Sales people are meant to push what they currently have on the floor, not provide you with information about future products. They want to sell you an item now, not later.

Yeah I agree on the car dock and having to have it plugged in to work in LS.
Have we seen any pics of the car dock (detailed enough at various angles) that show the three connection prongs?

I love Moto's implementation of its car dock and other docks for that matter. I have the Inc and I remember the accessories at launch (and even afterwards for that matter). It was pitiful. Glad to see this launch is going to be much different :D

No, actually these guys never pushed me toward a different device. In fact the first guy said to check back in a couple of weeks.

Just think about it... there's no way sales employees would be in the know about a release date. They may feel strong about their answers but they go through this all year long it's their job, all kinds of people come in throughout the year and ask about this and that phone, I'm sure they get sick of not having answers and they feel they have to tell their customers something so they look to Google.

It's common knowledge that Verizon generally doesn't share release dates on phones.

They always want to give you the latest possible date they have read so you don't come in pissed off because they told you it would release at XX date.

That all sounds true to my layman understanding as well, though I never use my phone in landscape on the homescreens, and never have. My dock is now mounted on my telescope and I am not in a position to test this theory; can anyone else see if you have auto rotate enabled, does the homescreen display in landscape when docked?

I did a quick search and couldn't find anything aside from the video which shows all angles Go to the 1mins 20sec mark. Why do you ask?

I was just wondering if the car dock had a micro-usb plug (located at the base maybe?) so it could be plugged in to a power source and the phone could charge just by inserting it in the cradle. Or do we know this already and I haven't consumed enough coffee yet :p

Agreed...I used to work for corporate VZW, given it was over a decade ago, and we were always the last to know. We were told about a phone pretty much a day or two in advance. VZW wants you to focus selling whats out until the last minute that the new phone, in this case GNex, launches.

CSR's have no clue and are worse than the sales reps. The sales rep in the end are paid commission and you have to bear that in mind that they are thinking of a quota at the end of the day. Bear in mind there are some real cool ones that will be honest with you but mostly they are few and far.

I think there is an overwhelming amount of information now to support the fact that we will see a launch this week. I have had all the same responses from all the sales reps I have spoken to in my area. Also just an FYI, I live about ten mins from Basking Ridge, VZW's headquarters. You would think above any those reps would know before anyone and its not the case...

Yes, there's input for 3.5mm headphone/audio and usb on the base because all the other ports are covered on this particular dock.

Re: inductive charging:

I don't know if this will be offered, but I'm not as worried since the phone does have the pins on the side with docks designed for charging without a direct micro-USB connection. Effectively the same concept, no?

No, not quite the same. Pogo pins will still require a dock. The TPU case enroute to my house will likely make the phone too thick to fit the dock. (although maybe inductive charging doesn't work through a case anyway--I don't know).

Also, for people who already have inductive charging mats, they wouldn't need to buy a new dock--just a new back/battery.

So now that I have a couple cases and soon to have a couple screen protectors, I decided I would show you guys what I got (compared to the one I have been using on my X since release day) and put links to where I got them.

399868344.jpg
399868339.jpg

I know, sweet sticker right??

So the one on the left is a 3 dollar case that I got from Hong Kong here. As expected, it took about 2 weeks to get here, so if you are looking for one before launch, if it launches next week, then this may not be the one to pick. It has a textured sides on it (not shown) that makes it a little bit more grippy than a regular TPU case which is really nice. It also has a cool S design on the back just giving it a little more style. I think the only (potential) downfall is the power button. Like my Droid X, it is covered, which is fine, but sometimes I get nervous before getting the phone that it may not line up correctly, or it may be annoying to push. The one on the right, here, I like this one the best. It is a little tougher than the other Nexus case and my Droid X case yet just as thin. It just makes me feel like if the phone were to take a fall, it would withstand it no problem. It also has a open hole for the power button which is something new to me, but I think I'll like it better.

The bottom, back and the sides (other than the power button) are pretty much identical on both. Both of them have the mold over the volume rocker, and holes necessary for the camera, microphones, ports ect.

As I have stated before, I LOVE TPU cases. I think they are the best case you can get. They are all super cheap, don't get stuck in your pockets like a silicon case could, and isn't 2 or 3 pieces like most hard cases and don't fly everywhere if dropped. I think with a TPU case and a screen protector (opinion) phones are plenty protected for every day use. Any more questions or anything, let me know!

Hey yo! User name change here...tluley (or just Tom) formerly known as cincycats.

Verizon won't let me change my phone, so I decided to change my user name :)

I was fine with your old name. However, I wouldn't complain if you changed that avatar... :D I kid, I kid!

Off topic baseball rant below.

If it weren't for the Yankees the rest of us in the AL East wouldn't have anyone to hate...er...kick our butts! Well, that's not true. There's also Boston. If the Rays could just get one or two consistent bats, there would be some real competition for the next 3 or 4 years. We just don't have the money to spend.

I share a season ticket to Rays games with a couple of friends and attend about 20 games a year. I can't stand all the negative B.S. that get's said about our area, stadium and attendance. Yes, there are problems with attendance but the real story behind it never gets told.

Do you remember learning in grade school that the United States is the "melting pot of the world" since we have such a diverse population of immigrants and blah, blah, blah. Well, Florida is the melting pot of the entire Northeast and Midwest of the United States! I myself grew up in northeast Ohio and was raised a Cleveland Indians fan (yes, they do exist). Do you have any idea how many New York and New England natives live in Tampa Bay? It is staggering. When you go to a Yankee or Red Sox game at Tropicana Field, it is almost a 50-50 split in fans. That's only counting the people that show up on a given night. Can you imagine the difference it would make if all those Yankees, Red Sox, Indians, Tigers, Orioles, White Sox, Cubs, Mets and Braves fans...who now call the Tampa Bay area their...home would change their CHILDHOOD ALLEGIANCES and support this 14-YEAR OLD franchise? I imagine it all the time.

I was living here in 1998 when the team was born, and I supported them from the start. It was hard at first. I used to wear a Rays jersey and Indians cap when Cleveland came to town. That lasted a few year until I got tired of seeing all fans of other visiting teams come to our stadium acting like it was theirs. Unfortunately very, very few in my same position have converted. This is a major reason we have such poor attendance. Also, as I said this team is only 14 years old. We still don't have ticket buying young adults, raised to be Rays fans. When you go to a Rays home game when they play and AL East opponent, you see the visiting team's fans...who now live here...all decked out in their team's gear. Including babies and school aged children. The're not even raising their kids to be Rays fans!

And then there are some who just won't go to a game in a dome. Or people from Tampa who don't want to drive in 1 hour bumper to bumper traffic over the bridges (we don't have public transit...just a few buses with limited routes). Oh yeah, and the economy. I called my mortgage company to see about getting a equity line of credit for some home improvement and when the agent saw the area I lived his mood changed. He stated our area is one of the worst effected by the recession. Nothing I didn't already know. Even the Buccaneer football games are all blacked out during home games because people just don't have the recreational money to spend.

Ugh! I had to vent sorry. There are Yankee fans everywhere. Our area isn't unique in that point. But we have a very, very large New York born and bred transplant population here. They are very loyal fans. The Rays are pretty much doomed if this doesn't turn around. It's sad really. They're a young, well-managed team with an incredible pitching staff. If we just had one or two sluggers we'd be dominant. I'm already looking forward to opening day.
