I have found a bunch of threads on this forum and others however the question never really gets answered. I want to use the people widget however I want it to give me the option to either call or text. I know you can click on the name at the bottom of the picture but I have found that some contacts are harder than others to hit that button and I end up calling them or starting a text message. I have seen screen shots where people have the rolodex icon instead of a phone or message icon. I know I can go into the people app but it's loaded with a lot of people and I only really talk to a handful on a daily bases so the widget would be perfect. Sorry if asking this is beating a dead horse but I couldn't find anything on how to get it to work.

Only way to do it is to hold the phone with two hands and slowly tap the name carefully.

I have all mine set to send a message (through google voice)

I'm not sure what you mean by rolodex icon, but if you add someone to your "Starred in Android" group through your computer online at google.com/contacts, they will appear there without the default action set until you click them and then it will prompt you to do that.

I also believe the hero people widget is different from the eris's

From what I understand, you have to remove everyone from your favorites. Then go into Gmail on a computer and re-add them under the "starred in Adnroid" group. Then re-sync you contacts and you shouldl end up with the contact card.

This will give you the contact card, but it only functions that way once. After you use it the first time the selected action becomes the default.

When you touch the (+) button to add a contact onto the "People" widget, it first asks you to select a contact. It then asks you to select a default action (Call mobile or Send message, provided the contact is set to "mobile") for that contact and then select a contact photo. Once added, just touching the photo will activate that default action for that contact.

Hope this helps.

How do you set your phone up to send a text from your eris through your google voice number??? If I'm misunderstanding you..elaborate on what you meant. Thanks

I agree, the HTC People widget needs a bit of work because it's almost useless in its present state defaulting to a single action. However, I've gotten pretty good at selecting the name below the picture, but it's still a pain to do.

I wonder what the 2.1 update with the new sense UI will be like since it allows multiple people widgets via the different contact groups. Will the new 2.1 people widget resolve this by at least giving us the option to set a default action or not. I also wonder if in 2.1, when you add a contact in different groups and have that same contact appear in two different people widgets, if it will acquire the same single default action across the two people widgets. Time will tell...

I just created two folders - one called "txt people" and one called "phone people" - and I created people shortcuts for everybody who I wanted in each folder and dragged them in. It's definitely a bit time-consuming, but it does the trick. If you have two spare home screens, you can keep the folders open and get one-touch for each contact in the folder.
