Hey.
I've just bought a HTC Magic, and have some questions, that i hope you can help me with.
1) What about updates? for example if i buy a Nokia i also get a CD with software to use together witth my phone. But i didn't get anything like that when buy my HTC. So i was wondering how i update my phones software? because at some time, i guess they will make upgrades, or what?
2) The battery time is really bad, is there anything i can do to make the battery last longer?
3) Is it possible somewhere in the settings to not allow the phone to use the internet on and off all the time, for example there is no reason for me that the phone is online with Gmail all the time and some off the other things that uses the internet. is it possible to only allow the phone to use the internet when i want it to?

Hope to hear from you

Welcome to the AF forums and enjoy your visits !!

To answer your questions partially :

1.) Your phone will get updates automatically pushed to it Over-The-Air (OTA).

2. & 3.) battery life will be better as you do things that involve parts of the phone in your question number 3. Like yes you can turn Syncing Off in the phone settings under Data Synchronization. You can turn WiFI and 3G off under Wireless contols, You can turn all radios and data off by putting the phone in Airplane Mode. You can reduced the screen brightness ... You battery should get better over time as you use it a bit from what you see just out of the box

I've had the Magic a few weeks now and my battery life is certainly better than the first couple of days.

I've found the GPS is the biggest battery killer. Also install an app like Toggle Settings which allows you to quickly find the options. Switching the phones radio to 2G only massively increases the battery life for when you are in situations where you don't need 3G.
