BL unlocking voids warranty, but what about carry-in replacement plans? Or should we take a stand?

OK, this whole deal to unlock the bootloader at the price of warranty is a scam, they should have compromised, no other android tab manufacturers have pulled this nonsense on anyone, and ASUS has no business pulling it on us. It's like they're assuming that we're just a bunch of bumbling idiots that are gonna blow up our primes the day we apply this unlock.

So, first question: would maybe a Best Buy carry-in replacement plan serve as a work - around (just a precaution if ASUS or Google screw it up or someone physically damages it)? I'd hate to pay another $170, but I prefer to take some caution.

Or...do we unite once again to protect the warranty service that is rightfully ours, or at least get some kind of reasonable compromise?

This is what root means and unlocking your bootloader will void your warranty. This isn't any sort of news when it comes to the development community. You take the risk of customizing with kernels,roms...... and everyone assumes those risks. If you mess up your phone/tablet, it's not on the companies back if you brick the phone/tablet.


If you're worried about voiding the warranty right off the bat, I would consider waiting on rooting and unlocking until something is found to return the tablet back to stock. But since it's an unlock key, then ASUS will know right away the tablet was compromised. So, either root and unlock the bootloader and assume those risks of breaking the tablet or don't mess with it Plain and simple

I am well aware of the risks, as I have been doing this for a long time. What I want to retain protection from, are issues unrelated to unlocking and rooting (ASUS'S or Google's own goof-ups that might brick the device, or someone knocking it off the table and breaking the screen, etc.

agentjobnyb, i would suggest you look into an additional insurance plan such as squaretrade. It is your best bet. However, once we get a recovery on it.... atleast bricks should be relatively easy to fix. Accidental drops is sometime completely different.

I am willing to bet if you had a hardware issue after rooting(ie screen separation) that it would be fixed under warranty regardless of whether you are rooted or not. If you really want to get technical, google Magnusson-Moss Act.

Unfortunately Mangussson-Moss leaves a lot of leeway for the company.. It was a common discussion when I was more into modifying cars.

Its easy enough for them to say, and have experts back up something like; "Well the unlocked bootloader allowed unlicensed software, which created extra heat the device was never meant to handle and the screen separated."

BS I know, but don't expect it to save you if you modify your device, especially when its explicitly part of the warning when Asus gives you the keys to the car. Plus I don't expect many people would spend the money on proving it wasn't the cause.

Bottom line, 3rd party insurance is your best bet, and even then you should expect to take the risk. I still plan on unlocking my tab regardless.

I don't think that you will be able to get quick results through legal means. The best bet is to pressure Asus to change their stance through contacting them directly and urging others to do so on forums and other social networking. In the end, I really think that Asus won on this one. Unless someone can reverse engineer the process so that your tab doesn't phone home for the keys, then warranty voiding will be a part of BL unlocking. I wonder what type of implication this move will have for other manufacturers. It's definitely a way for phone and tab makers to offer freedom on their stuff but wash their hands of you when you choose to accept it.
