Root Exchange after unlocking bootloader?

So I have the problem with the loose trim around the usb port causing horrible buzzing when it vibrates. I called 611 and the VZW CSR assured me I could swap it for this and notated the account.

However...I unlocked the bootloader and rooted it. I can relock the bootloader and flash the ruu, but will I be able to swap it? Should I just leave the bootloader unlocked and flash the ruu?

Has anyone done this? If I try and the person actually looks at the recovery and sees that I have unlocked it, will they "blacklist" the phone/my account preventing me from trying at another VZW store?

Thanks in advance!

I seriously doubt it.. Some of the people working in the stores around here barely know much about the rezound.. Most of em bought into the RAZR or Nexus (And all the chicks dig the Iphone)... Unless there is some type of protocol they have to follow when returning a phone. There was nothing checked when I returned my Nexus.. It had a unlocked bootloader and could have been rooted.. I can't see why having an unlocked bootloader would be a problem.

However, after my rant, I'll be interested to see how it goes!!

They have no idea how to check for any of that. Don't worry about it. Don't mention it either tho. Just go in stupid and you won't have a problem.

I returned a rooted droid x and the droid x2. I didn't even bother removing the custom rom on the droid X. They never even looked. They verified if the sd card was there and that the phone turned on and that's it. You will be fine with relocking and flashing the RUU. It is mandatory to relock to flash the RUU. The RUU will fail otherwise.

Thanks for the info guys! I'm going to nandroid from amon ra tomorrow then relock the bootloader and flash the ruu before I take it in at lunch. I'll just play dumb.

One thing I'm worried about though is getting a refurb instead of a new one. How can I be certain I get a new one and if they do try to give me a refurb, how do I get them to give me a new one?

I called 611 and spoke to a rep to confirm I would receive a brand new phone and not a refurb, and since tomorrow is the 14th day of my "worry free guarantee", he confirmed I will be getting a brand new phone, not a refurb. :)

Just finished my Amon Ra nandroid backup. Just have to take it in tomorrow at lunch and once I unlock the bootloader, install amon ra, and root it I'll just restore and be back in business! I'll have to wipe the battery stats and recalibrate battery left, but nbd there.

Well, the good news is they swapped it without question. The bad news is, the new one still has some vibration there (and will probably get worse over 2 weeks, as it loosens). :(

Also, the capacitive lights on this one are definitely pinker than the last one. Sigh. Looks like I just wasted my time to get a phone with only slightly less vibration and the pink buttons of death. fml.

I wouldn't accept it if its as bad as u say.. the button color is no biggy, but the loud vivration.. it would be returned.. mine doesnt do that. Yours shouldnt.

Not happy right now. They basically jerked me around for an hour (no one even helped me for 20 minutes and the store was empty), then guy #1 asks me to show him, then he disappears in the back. Comes out, ignores me, walks over to the sales people and I can hear them talking low and holding the other rep's rezound to turn on the capacitive lights etc. Then he disappears again, guy #2 comes up to me and asks me what the problem is. I show him and he disappears again for 15 minutes. Comes back out, tells me he opened 3 boxes and the colors "all look the same" and "they all make some sort of vibration noise". Gee thanks. I said "fine, give me my old one back. at least it's buttons were not pink". He says "I don't think we can even activate it" and disappears for ANOTHER 15 minutes. Comes out with my phone. I compared the buttons, and my menu and back button are DEFINITELY pinker, but whatever. Since the vibration was the same on both and he was clearly not going to swap it for another phone, I gave up and walked out.

Totally different experience from trip #1 and I'm not real happy with Verizon right now.

Sorry to hear that... It shouldnt affect them.. Some of the people that work at VZW really tick me off too.. I cussed one out basically on the phone, then I showed up at the store a week later and he was probably the best rep I've ever dealt with.. I had a rep when I wanted to return my nexus for a rezound that basically made me feel like I was making a terrible mistake. I don't feel like it should be an opinion of theirs.. I think it should be whatever makes the customer happy...

Going to a VZW store is like a box of Chocolates... Never know what kinda Rep your gonna get..

He's exactly right. If I get a bad rep, I go to a different store or come back at a different shift. I'm lucky to have about 10 stores within driving distance, so it's not a big deal. Some reps will help you in every way possible and if they don't, show a little attitude especially since there are always other customers in the store to witness your disdain. They straighten up pretty quick in my experience. I'm not saying you should be a jerk but getting slightly louder and voicing your frustration with the service is a prudent thing to do and to show you won't take no for an answer.

As for the rattle, I never experienced this, but I always have a case on my phone. for the extended battery and stock battery. Maybe that's why I don't notice any rattle? Or perhaps I got lucky with getting a phone with red buttons and no rattle or back door creaks.

I only go to a specific Verizon store because the chick there is truly "in the know" and I never have a problem with her. If I don't see her, I walk right back out and will come back the next day. I hate having to sit there and tell them what the problem is and how to fix it...all the while listening to their sales rep lie their asses off selling iPhones like they're made by Jesus magic. I've resolved myself to sticking to phone support where they usually accept whatever I tell them because I start the conversation with "I've been in the IT field for 15 years, my symptoms are XYZ, I've done ABC to correct it. Send me a replacement" Works 95% of the time.
