sending calls to voicemail

What is the purpose of this? On my Droid I have the option of sending certain contacts straight to voicemail, but if I do then I miss the call,so what's the point of this?

The point is to miss the call and send them straight to voicemail I haven't used it but I suppose it would be useful if I was being bugged by someone and needed a short break from them without having to reject their frequent calls each time. For instance if you have a depressed relative that calls several times a day. You might not want to ignore them completly but you might want a break for a while.

I get that, I just thought that I would still be able to see the missed call
