Help No(w) update for sim-free UK S2

Who was this directed at - out of interest...?

That was actually for you only :p.That was posted on the Fresh thread which you had started. Then Slug merged the threads and now my post looks out of place...

@Slug
that's the 2nd time today :p. I already edited one of my posts coz post merge two of my comments were similar and one after the other:p.

Chap, do you realise how happy I am that this update has finally been released!? How many days I have been waiting (like others) on KIES to spit this negligible update out onto my handset!? I am struggling to contain my excitement.

You're lucky I managed to keep it in ONE thread! :p

(Sorry to mods for posting new thread - however no apologies made for content of post!)

Haha... your excitement is understandable, but rules are rules :)

BTW if you are as impatient as me (and you seem to be) just flash leaks and unofficial frankenstein packages.

Played with the update a little. No major gripes with it yet. I'll factory reset tomorrow to get a better idea of what the baseline is, and then customize to my liking. Finally played with the Chrome beta and was NOT happy. On certain websites it completely choked, making navigation impossible. Stock browser is much better in this regard. Would love to have the features/sync of the Chrome browser for Android if they ever work out the bugs.

Its not that you need to do a factory reset. Its just that sometimes if you upgrade the firmware without wiping, there might be clashes and you might find some problems like rebooting, apps that don't work, battery drain etc.

A reset / wipe in most cases just clears it right up. In your case, since you just factory reset, I would assume your phone is relatively clean, and would unlikely require another reset.

Cheers

OK, took the plunge and followed these instructions to move to ICS (UK Sim Free):
[All Official ICS Firmwares] I9100XWLP7 (4.0.3) - United Kingdom (XEU) [17-4-12] - xda-developers. Worked a treat.

Phone/Data/Wifi/Etc all connected first time. Was quite a phaff putting everything back on the screens the way I wanted, but I'm a sad geek and sort of enjoyed it!

Seems to all be working perfectly. Couple of things I have noticed:

SMS/PHONE: A couple of times I've found that the SMS & Phone icon on the Dock become unresponsive. Had to off/on or delete icon and re-add from App Drawer. Anyone else noticed this?

WIDGETS: No more Buddies widget, have to use Contact, which does not do the direct dial thing. No big deal, but a step back (I seem to remember someone else mentioning this). My Calendar Widget has started scrolling - didn't work before :)

BROWSERS: I used Dolphin HD and managed to lose my Favourites - make a note or save them somewhere! Chrome will take some getting used to, so I won't comment yet.

SECURITY: Unlock PIN key-pad is laid out differently... I keep pressing 0 instead of OK. I'll learn!

APPS: Most of my Apps reinstalled themselves (downloading took a time, you want to be on WiFi while it is doing that the first time) but there are several Apps it did not reinstall, so you may have to go through and manually add some.

Updated last night, I have the CPW firmware, all seems to be fine although one thing has confused me slightly. As I've only had my phone three weeks I thought I might as well factory reset as I hadn't filled up the phone much but after the reset, I still had all my photos etc on the phone plus the screensaver was as it was before I reset. I would have thought a factory reset would have wiped literally everything?

Also, are there any good apps we can now get that weren't available before? I've tried Chrome already but think the stock browser seemed better. Are there any ICS exclusive launchers?

cheers.

Hi,

New forum user here. Did the ICS update via Keis. Everything (almost)works well, no BT prolems , battery seems fine, happy with the browser and chrome etc.

But and a biggy, I can't enter the pin number to get the sim lock working, or indeed the pin number for my carrier settings. Every thing i try (using different input methods, swipe, normal keyboard - or pasting in the password) i get pin is blocked or incorrect pin number.

Under the security settings I make the pin viewable so i know what i'm typing in, the pin is correct but the phone rejects it.

Any advice please gratefully recieved!

Welcome! Bummer that your first post has to be about a pretty major problem... Until someone comes up with a better suggestion, I'd say your only recourse is to get support from your carrier/phone vendor. Aftersales support of that sort it supposed to be what they're there for. Hope you get it fixed.

Hi All,

I updated last night. One thing that is confusing me is that it looks identical to gingerbread for me. None of the apps have changed their appearance and I only have 3 apps on the dock (phone, contacts & applications).

Is there a way of putting more than 3 apps on the dock?? Any reason why the apps wouldn't have updated?

At the minute I have gone back to using GoLauncher with and ICS theme because it looks much better!

Cheers

@Chud
it looks identical to GB because of the touchwiz overlay that Sammy uses.
Many apps have indeed changed, check out the Music app, or the Gmail app, just to name a few.

As far as I know everyone has 4 apps on the dock. The way to change the dock is same as in GB, press the edit button and drag icons onto the dock, or off it if you want to remove them.

If you prefer the stock ICS look of the launcher then you may try Nova launcher.

Yes I thought it was the touchwiz but wasn't sure why there were only 3 apps on the dock. Did a factory reset and that seems to have fixed it.

I used GoLauncher before and didn't know about Nova - thanks!

Before you settle on a new launcher, try Go Launcher, Nova, and Apex. All three have benefits, and I used Go until ICS hit. I'm now using Apex. It felt a little more refined than Nova to me, but that's just one man's opinion.
