Upgrading Froyo 2.2.1 to ICS

Hi there!

I have an "aging" Galaxy S I bought exactly a year ago with a custom version of Froyo 2.2.1. A colleague of mine sent me MyICS Ultimate Fusion (build 3) and told me it's a piece of cake to upgrade, but she already uses Gingerbread.

My phone's giving me a hard time already with apps crashing, so it's time to reset to factory defaults anyway, but I'm also kind of curious about following that up with an upgrade to ICS.

My questions are:
1. Is it possible to upgrade directly to ICS using Clockworkmod (v. 2.5 is already installed) by selecting the ROM zip that's on my phone? (I don't care about the data on the phone except my phone book which is sync'ed with Kies)
2. If not, can I upgrade to the latest ROM available on Kies (2.3.6 "value pack", I believe) and then upgrade to ICS using the newest version of CWM?

Hey
as long as you are rooted and have a version of CWM that will allow you to wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache and factory reset/wipe user data and then flash a zip file, you should be fine. Do those things in that order and then do the wipes and factory reset again before booting into ICS. You may also need to install the latest Google Apps for ICS, you can find these in lots of these forums, search for GAPPS for ICS.
It's worth bearing in mind that the ROM you are going to use could be an MTD ROM which means that it changes the partition structure of the internal memory. You get more apps in the phone memory, basically. Becuase of this it is more difficult to go back to Gingerbread or Froyo etc. It can be done but requires the use of Odin and a 're-partition' which could mess up your internal memory.
There is also the CM9 Nightly build now available for I9000 which I am using. It's very good.

Thank you so much for your reply. I flashed MyICS yesterday and it works like a charm.
It generally feels more nimble than Froyo, but I do miss a few features that I guess were part of the Galaxy S specific ROM:
* Setting alarm clock ringtone to something other than the built in 5 options
* Displaying the most likely contact name as I was keying a phone number.
* The slick embossed look of the calendar widget
* Being able to schedule the days and time of day during which push-email service works

Are these truly Samsung-specifics, or am I just using a very simplistic ROM?

They aren't truly Samsung Specs but modified ROMs to fit into your phone. You may not get all the features of ICS but I am sure it is still fun have it. :thumbup:

Two more things seem to bother me now more than these bells and whistles:
1. Is it still possible to access the phone APK codes (you know, the ones you type into the dialer to access GPS and network band options)?
2. It seems like ICS is eating up my battery like crazy. Is there a way assess what the cause is?

Tbh i installed it, and ran it for a couple of weeks before going back to gingerbread. the battery life was so bad, i was needing to charge it at least once a day, and was also having issues with app's crashing and freezing.

im just waiting for an s3 to arrive, then ill have another mess around with the s1
