Metro PCS Moving Backwards with Phone Selection

Buy the way, have you noticed that Straight Talk will likely to terminate your service if you go over 2GB data limit. It is quite inconvenient.

You do realize that's 2GB over the mobile network, right? Not 2GB total data limit. They don't care what you do over wi-fi... Therefore, totally not my concern, nor the concern of most people who own smartphones.

Study after study shows MOST people use 500MB data or LESS per month over a mobile network. YES, they use more total, but most is over wi-fi, either at home or work.

The extent of cellular-based, smartphone-originated data demand is well understood. Numerous data points released by operators, vendors and other players have accurately measured average monthly cellular
consumption on smartphones. This has typically placed average monthly data
usage in the range of 100-500MB per month,
depending on the country or the
operator in question.

I'll show you 200 more studies and references, if you wish.

Breaking it down:

Put your smartphone on a data diet- MSN Money
Teens' average 321 megabytes per month is relatively modest compared with the average 578 megabytes per month among the 25-34 set,

Still, "578 MB" is nowhere near "2GB". Therefore most people don't care, and would rather have a FANTASTIC phone with 7mbps -12mbps speed.

______________
But using myself as an example,

Per the excellent My Data Manager app on my LTE LG Esteem:

My Metro bill is due tonight at midnight, and by My Data Manager for this "month" (July) I've used :
  • 289MB over the "mobile" network and
  • 698MB over the wi-fi networks (home and work).

Last "month", June:

  • 296 MB mobile
  • 689 MB wi-fi

May:

  • 275 MB mobile
  • 1.47 GB wi-fi

April:

  • 377 MB mobile
  • 1.01 GB wi-fi

March:

  • 341 MB mobile
  • 1.11 GB wi-fi

February:

  • 177 MB mobile
  • 1.90 GB wi-fi

January:

  • 273 MB mobile
  • 1.14 GB wi-fi

Need I go back further? In at least 7 months I've NEVER gone over 400MB on the mobile network.

2GB? Plenty for me!

___________

By the way FedEx delivered my two Straight Talk sims today. Now just waiting on the two Galaxy Nexus phones to arrive... :)

Do you think I am mentally challenged? Of course, it is clear.

It doesn't matter to me because I only use mobile network for data unless it is not available. Besides, my home wireless internet is slower than Metro data network. It is also convenient be on mobile data all the time. Why not if it is unlimited?

I don't care how much data most people use; I care how much data I use. There were months when I went over 2GB, and it nice
not to think about it (I have cheap unlimited legacy plan). I also tether from time to time upon demand. So, I am staying with Metro unless I move somewhere.

I agree though, for most people 2 GB is more than enough.

Relax hes only being helpful he meant no offense.. i gotta say since ive been using 3g lately at home and wifi ive been fine with 0% data used :D

Well I have thanked him for the alternative idea. But who doesn't know that mobile carriers limit only your mobile data use?

well there's lots of people that dont know much about data plans now in days ive seen people asking about the cheesy $25 monthly plan asking if theres a way to pause their data when they dont need it and tunr it back on when they do and the solution was very simple if they can find the right settings by turning off their Lte and just going cdma to force your phone to use 3g which isnt being limited nor throttled in many area. i believe in chazz's situation and people just like him should consider themselves very lite data users or casual users of data shall we say. if u barely user your browser to google something or check emails sometimes then ya could consider the staight talk deal. see what i mean is we have those people that are data aggressive users and those that use their phones for games and apps im kind of both so the plan may not be for me unless i can find a way to balance the way i use my phone for example ill lightly use it when im not home and when im home ill use wifi , that way i never go past 2gb.

Yeah, I agree. 2GB is more than enough for most users. I would manage to live with it, but I would have to switch to my home network when at home, which is only 1 Mbps.

Once, I went over 2GB in a day. There was a major Apple OS update for my MacBook, which was around 2GB. I updated it via tethering away from home.

First I was sort of joking when I asked if you knew that meant mobile data only, not total data. I knew YOU probably did, but most people (in their minds) think about the total data they use per month, when choosing a plan -- not realizing only a small percentage of their data usage is over the mobile network.

I don't think you are mentally challenged IF you actually know how much data you use, over Metro's network. I would like to see a My Data Manager screenshot. ;)

Most people THINK they use a ton of data -- and feel pressured to pay Metro for UNLIMITED data when they are being idiots with their money. Until someone proves to me they actually know how much data they really use instead of just talking about it, I reserve the right to think they are really average data users like everyone else. i.e. less than 500MB per month over a mobile network.

95% of AT&T's customers use LESS than 2GB per month. Only the "top 5%" were regularly going over 2.1 GB, so there's where the "magic" 2GB cap got created by AT&T and others have followed. And "most" (over 50%) use less than 500MB per month.

"But I use more than that!" PROVE IT. Study after study shows that MOST people use less than 500MB per month OVER MOBILE NETWORK, because wi-fi takes up the slack.

OK, some people do use more than that, people use use their phone as their only internet connection. MOST people are not like that. Metro's network is too unreliable to be my only internet connection. :p Gray bars all the time, saying I have some kind of ghost connection with no data?  Having to turn airplane mode on and off to get a connection re-set....

I have 12 - 20 mbps cable modem at home and T3 line at work. Both with wi-fi for my phone.

I was pressured at first to go to Metro's unlimited data plan, and I got the data manager app and said hey, that's money that could be used for more gas in my car!
 So, I switched to the $50 plan.

Therefore my point, is so what if Straight Talk caps at 2GB? Industry stats show that works for 95% of the people.

And that's cool. I am just talking about my needs. I know that I go over some months, albeit not often, because my tethering app shows my data consumption.

Interesting, my 4G seems pretty stable unless somebody calls LOL. I was able do download huge files and stream Amazon instant videos on my TV.
