Sprint Community: Announcements: HTC EVO 3D and HTC EVO Design Customers to get Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich Update

"The wait is almost over for HTC EVO™ 3D and HTC EVO Design 4G™ customers! The Android™ 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, update will begin rolling out to users by early August. Stay tuned for exact dates.

When your device is eligible for the update, it will notify you to download. Once the download is complete, you will be prompted to install the update. Installation will take a few minutes, and your device will be disabled during the installation process. It will be ready to use when the process is complete."
They still suck! Even though I'm not leaving Sprint (anytime soon. :)) for another carrier _ cause they are the only one "who has truly unlimited data" ☜ laugh out loud...come on Sprint -- it would be nice to hear and see another slogan.

The wait is almost over for HTC EVO™ 3D and HTC EVO Design 4G™customers! The Android™ 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, update will begin rolling out to users by early August. Stay tuned for exact dates.

When your device is eligible for the update,it will notify you to download. Once the download is complete, you will be prompted to install the update. Installation will take a few minutes, and your device will be disabled during the installation process. It will be ready to use when the process is complete.

Android 4.0 adds numerous enhancements and new features, including:

A refined, evolved userinterface that is simple, beautiful and useful

Face Unlock: use state-of-the-art facial recognition technology to unlock your phone with a smile

Redesigned camera app which introduces Scenes like Panorama, and Effects such as Vignette, Depth of Field,Vintage and Posterize

Web browser now lets you sync Google Chrome™ bookmarks, request full desktop versions of sites, see your open tabs in a new layout

People: browse friends, family and coworkers, see their photos in high-resolution and check their latest status updates from Google+

Improved keyboard with incredibly accurate typing, an inline spell checker and improved copy and paste support

Redesigned Gmail™ app that now lets you swipe between conversations to catch up quickly and search foremails even without a data connection

Google+ integration that lets you hangout and video chat with up to 10 friends using your front-facing camera.
Sounds pretty good. I guess the wait wasn't bad after all. :)

Hahaha. You know, why bother to keep giving out these timeframes? Every month they just push it back to the following month. Just go back to giving a generic "Coming soon". Much better than giving us a date that they never, ever hit.

I'm just as pissed off as you are (about the EVO 3D update delays) - but do realize that this is the first time that Sprint has officially and publicly provided a timeline for the update.

AFAIK, everything till now has been "a store rep said" or "heard a sprint VP hint at" or "customer service agent said" or "a voice in my head said" etc...

While my primary device is now a GNex, I don't really see a reason to doubt this (incredibly terribly horribly delayed update). Absolutely no reason why it had to be this delayed - except sprint trying to frustrate customers to buy new devices - but it is what it is.

When I was at the Sprint today (not getting my phone fixed, cuz it took them two days to figure out that I just needed a new battery and have to wait till thursday to get one)...I talked to one of the techs about the update, and he also confirmed what some other people have said here.

He said they get multiple emails DAILY trying to push them to get people to buy LTE phones, and to try and get people to give up on WiMax phones.(Sprint doesn't want to deal with WiMax related phones anymore once LTE has been released to 50%+ of the market) When I took my 3D to get repaired, they tried talking me into using my upgrade to buy an SIII or EVOLTE instead of using insurance to have my phone looked at. Also, that the VM version of our phone with ICS has had alot of bugs of problems with apps and native programs that both Sprint and VM are putting into the phone. Sprint knows if they released this to us (contract customers) they would have alot of headaches and problems, so they are trying to eliminate any kind of bugs or issues; as they want this to be the LAST AND FINAL update our phone will ever see...

First off, sorry I've been MIA from this thread. Dealing with some IRL things right now.

Corpse, if Sprint really feels that way about our Evo3D's, I would be personally offended. I made a bet on Sprint buying this phone & it's a darn good device.

If they really want us to upgrade to LTE so badly, then they should offer free upgrades to those of us who renewed our contracts within one-year of WiMax stopping expansion & LTE being announced.

Sprint should back up & support their flagship phones like the Evo3D like they said they would. I'm trying to have faith here... I really am. I am disappointed in this situation.

Well with that being said, nice to see you back around again, hope your IRL are being ironed out and you can get back to the action again and have fun with us again. ;)

I would hope so to, I know what I said earlier goes with a long string of what people have "heard" from reps and techs, etc...I bought this phone because at the time, and even still now, it is one of the top performing phones out there...you can throw the whole 3D thing out the window, and this is still one of the best phones.

But I have read on some other sites, where people have also said that both HTC and Sprint agree that this might be the last update that ever goes with our phone, barring some horrible bug that comes with the ICS update. Since its taking so long for us to get this update, I'm would think both Sprint and HTC are working hard to make sure this is a smooth and bug free update.

I agree with the contract thing as well, but since LTE is only available in limited markets as of now, and Los Angeles is not one of them...I'm in no rush to upgrade to a new phone. Some sites have even said Los Angeles and many other large market areas won't see LTE until 2013 and mid 2013 at that.

So with that being said, this official announcement of ICS finally by Sprint has brightened the mood some, but it still is kinda sour

Why would we upgrade to LTE when only 20% of the U.S. even have LTE available in their area. I live in a major city in Ohio and I don't even get WiMAX 4g.

Makes perfect sense to me to upgrade
#syke

Honestly. If you don't have 4g now and won't with LTE I don't see why you wouldnt upgrade to the newest hardware tech with the 4.0 that you've been waiting on for 6months

Since when did Sprint not push customers to buy the latest and greatest phones with the latest connectivity (WiMAX / LTE) regardless of the customer would EVER be able to connect to that WiMAX / LTE network? ;)

* I have WiMAX coverage till across the street (When I purchased the EVO 4G, Sprint told me that there was an antenna issue that was being addressed - years later, it is non-existent, and Sprint updated the coverage maps to indicate zero Wimax coverage here).
* With LTE, it shows full coverage at my residence and office. Of course I can't connect to LTE unless I go a few miles away to the next city.

It sucketh!

I really like Sprint's SERO plan, but honestly, had it not been for that (and most of their customer service agents that I've interacted with in the past few years), I probably would have switched to a GSM carrier (and a true GNex) a long time ago

It's funny (read: sad), but it woudln't at all surprise me if we had a pretty decent version of JB before Sprint gives us the official ICS update.

Saw yesterday (iirc) that there's an unofficial CM10 port for the Evo 3D, and while not much is working of course, it's a start. I have waaaaaaay more faith in the community to keep things moving and get things out than Sprint at this point.

Edit: Link to the port: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776234

Ripped from the thread at the time of this post:
Works:
-3G Data
-Texts
-Bluetooth starts (couldn't test connection)
-Google Now FC's
-GPS/Maps/Navigation
-Status bar text blurs as new notification comes in, don't know if thats a feature or bug
-MMS pics preview in notification pull-down is pretty sweet
-Proximity sensor
-SuperUser fixed
biggrin.gif
(go to downloads page)

Doesn't work:
-Wifi won't turn on
-Sound (including phone)
-Browser "works" but display is messy
-Face unlock couldn't start
-Gallery only shows google plus instant uploads and posts albums
