Coming Soon: Otterbox Commuter Droid case

So did I ... so I went immediately to the website.

Then I read this, at the bottom of the page...

Environmental Protection:
Case provides added protection against bump and shock.
Case is NOT protective against water.

UN-FREAKIN-BELIEVABLE!!!!!!!

Fail!

Next!

I think that was pretty obvious by looking at the pictures even before it was available. However, if you plan to go scuba diving with your phone, they offer water proof housing.

None of the defender cases are water resistant. I don't think they even make the water resistant one for the iphone anymore.

Case not protecting against water...

Just thinking this through here, but I think it would be pretty hard for it to protect against water and still allow the physical keyboard to be able to slide out, or at least easily.

To create a seal, the two parts of the case would have to be under pressure, which would cause the two upper and lower section of the phone to separate over time... This has been an issue with some of the cases on the market.

So, I guess when it comes to cases, you cannot have your cake and eat it too...

No, but I do plan to long-distance tour on my bike. (Maybe you've heard of rain?) I'll just have to buy a generic waterproof case. I just can't believe that the OTTERBOX case is NOT waterproof. That is their deal! Their specialty!

I didn't care about the physical keyboard. I assumed that would become inoperable in a waterproof case.

I sent them an email asking if the 2600 case will work with capacitive screens. It will definitely keep the rain out. I wouldn't put it under water though.

Hey guys,

So what do you think about the Otter Case for the Moto Droid?

  • Does it feel good in your hands?
  • Dust/lint collector?
  • Top of the keyboard still accessible?
  • Does it come off easy for use on Motorola Media Cradle & Car Dock?
  • Most importantly...is it still thin? Or as close to a naked Moto Droid as possible?

And by the way, protect against minor drops?

Thx

To add, this case feels really slick. I can just see it slipping out of my hand and heading for the asphalt. The plugs will do nicely for keeping dust out, but the front part coming loose constantly is a major annoyance. The mic is not covered up and calls are fine. The power button, volume rocker, and camera buttons are covered by rubber and stand out more. This is a huge plus. It makes them easier to push, plus you can no longer notice that the cheap gold flake has worn off the camera button. If this thing hits the deck, I have no doubt the phone will easily pop out of the case and you will have parts all over. I know this is mainly due to it being a slider phone, but the clear plastic case that Verizon makes is definitely more snug and would do a better job, plus it's cheaper. I'll keep the Otter Box on for a while and see if I have a change of heart, but for now I'd say it's a no go.

I got my Otterbox Wednesday evening and have had it on my phone for about a day and a half now...

Honestly, this is the best cell phone case I've ever seen, or owned for that matter. The fit and finish are perfect, very snug and very secure. The rounded corners and the high quality materials used in construction give the phone a great 'finished' feel, very solid. The power/sleep, volume and camera buttons all line up perfectly, and as another poster mentioned make them much easier to use, especially the power/sleep. The covered ports are lined up dead on as well and do a great job of keeping dust and dirt out. The slider works perfectly and is not hindered at all by the case... It slides open smooth and clicks back into place perfectly. Both the top and bottom pieces fit snug and secure; no issues at all with either feeling loose or coming off. Both feel like an integrated part of the phone.

So, essentially, I love this case... highly recommended! :D
