I'm off to root my Droid, wish me luck!

I use to load roms on my winmo device all the time. I am interested in what I can get into on the Droid. I think I used Blazing Wolfs roms. I wonder if he doing any on the droid. I know he has one now.

I am following these directions, if any one want to take the leap too. I will provide some feedback, to my success, or lack there of.

Good luck, and congrats on doing the best thing you possibly could with your Droid.

I recommend CyanogenMod. You can download ROM Manager from the Market after you've rooted and installed busybox and flash_image, and that'll let you download and flash the ClockworkMod recovery and the CyanogenMod ROM.

HAHA! so here's the update:

I followed directions, except i had already updated my driver, so no ! there. I extracted the files, but by default they didn't all go into the android folder, so I was just typing in the address of where they went. I got all the way to: "cat /data/local/su > su" and file or directory error occurred. So, I rebooted, deleted all the files and unzipped properly. I no can't even get past "adb push su /data/local" getting a "can't connect to daemon"

not sure what to do now. My phone still works.....

nothing to really fear about rooting it, its beyond rooting that can sometimes get hairy, but i have NEVER had a problem I could not fix by myself or with forum help

I read further in the thread that about rooting and someone else suggested an updated root process. I used it. I downloaded Rom manager and now looking for flash_image and busybox. Shadow - can you help with this?

that is the link I used. A lot fewer steps. Seems to have worked without a hitch.

Not sure what you are trying to do here... su is a terminal command to request super user access. Push is an ADB function that sends a file to the device. I'm not a UNIX/Linux expert, but is any of this even proper syntax to do anything?

Have you flashed a different recovery rom yet?

Following the instructions to root with dm updater is pretty much idiot proof. Once rooted you can download ROM Manager from the market and flash clockworkmod recovery which makes things a lot more user friendly. I think SPrecovery is the other big one people use but I have no experience with it.

Once again, I am not an expert at all and went into the process of rooting and flashing custom roms knowing nothing (about 4 days ago). Now I'm comfortable using ADB and have flashed quite a few roms.

I followed this walkthrough Installing CyanogenMod v5.0.5 for Motorola DROID | Droid Life: A Motorola Droid Blog going into it knowing nothing and was running cyanogen 5.0.5.3 within about 25 minutes.

I don't mean to swing on Kellex's sack but the video walkthroughs are very accessible to a noob compared to just a text walkthrough on a forum thread.

So long as you've actually installed the update.zip that grants you root access, you don't really need to worry about manually flashing busybox or a recovery image (unless you want to, then props!).

DMUpdater will flash SPRecovery for you.

ROM manager will flash ClockworkMod recovery for you.

Any ROM you flash using either recovery will have busybox installed.

nstallion, I don't know what I was doing, just following the directions. Either way, it didn't work so I followed the ones in my previous update. download 2 files, copy into 1, then to phone, reboot, install....done. Now I am downloading CyanogenMod in Rom Manager.....we will see. Any one thinking about making the leap....it wasn't that bad....used the second set of instruction and I was done in no time. I didn't think it would be much harder than new roms on my old winmo.

Whoops... I remember having to install busybox and flash_image myself with the older ROMs like Bugless Beast 0.7.5. Didn't realize it's automatically done now. So yeah, now that you have root, just do what Fabolous said and download ROM Manager, flash ClockworkMod, and then go into Download ROM, pick CyanogenMod, and pick the latest version. Check off Google Apps, let it download, and then pick Backup and (if you want to start fresh) let it wipe data and cache (you'll have to redownload your apps but the Market keeps a list of them in your Downloads section). Don't be afraid to mess around once you've made a Nandroid backup, cause you can always restore that backup you made. Have fun!
