App to automatically switch phone on and off?

Hi all !

This is my first post to the forum and I am quite excited to be joining the world of Android and Free Software!

I had got myself an Xperia U, but was not very happy with the size of the screen and the high resolution and ending up getting the more basic Xperia Miro. You see, I am not a power user and just need basic functionality from my phone.

Now one of the wonderful things about Android is the presence of numerous apps on Google Play. Since I have earlier used Linux Ubuntu for quite a while, I was expecting to find an app that lets me power down the phone at a preset time (in the night for me), and then boots it up (early in the morning) at a user defined time.

Unfortunately, though I did look around I am yet to find such an app. So, will someone let me know if they know of such an app? Or alternately, if no such app exists is there any workaround to the problem?

Thanks!

Oh, really?
Actually I was using an old Blackberry Curve 8520 and it had this useful function.
It would switch off and then switch the phone on in the same profile depending on the times set by the user.
Even Ubuntu has this nice app that lets you do the same to your laptop, provided it is plugged.
Hence, I sort of assumed that there would be some app like this for Android!
Thanks anyway!

It wouldn't be a good idea anyway, switching the phone on actually takes a lot of power depending on setup. Airplane mode just uses 3% over 7hrs.

Besides, all computers, since Day One (in the fifties), are designed to be on 24/7/365. They are supposed to be on 24 hours a day. Like chanchan said unneccessarily switching the phone on and off takes a lot of power and jolts the device. You don't want that if not neccessary.

Question: did you always switch off your phone every night (pull the wire from its socket) when there weren't mobile phones yet?
If you didn't then, then why do it now?
Also, real emergency calls tend to come in the middle of the night. With a switched off phone you won't get them.
And lastly: the night is the best time to charge your mobile device: slowly, over USB.

Because the OP WANTS to! End of. Just because YOU don't switch your's off and can't understand why he should want to doesn't mean to say everybody should do what you do. I also switch my phone off at night. If I need it as an alarm then I'll switch airplane mode on and turn it to silent. That's what "I" do because that's the way "I" want to use my phone. Each to his/her own ....

To the OP, I'd do the same. Either manually switch airplane mode ON and silent ON or do it via an app. Tasker is one but there must be something in the Play Store that would just allow you to choose which options to turn on/off at particular times.

Having airplane mode and silent both on basically means the phone is OFF as regards phone calls/syncing/calendar reminders BUT allows you to use it as a clock/alarm clock, etc

I've not seen an app that physically turns your phone off and I don't believe the phone is capable of being turned on from an off state by software. That being said like dvhttn said, there are apps that will put your phone in about any state you want automatically for you. I have used Tasker, but find it difficult to use. There is an app called Setting Profiles that will also do this type of thing. It is quite easy to use. There is nothing wrong with tasker, I just think its difficult to use.

Thanks all for your very useful replies! Its great to see animated discussion on this forum.

I see the point some of you are trying to make, and especially the bit about emergencies.

That notwithstanding, the main reason I would want to switch off the phone is to save up on battery. The Xperia phone I have is great except for the battery. Clearly that's one area the manufacturers are not too interested in right now.

But from what I gather from the replies here, I should be able to put it into flight mode in a timed manner with one of the profile apps.

Thanks!

I have a Desire HD which was slated for it's puny battery at launch. Still got the same battery nearly two years later and it still lasts about a day+ of moderate use. But in airplane mode it only loses about 5% battery overnight max. Biggest drains are the radios and screen. Both are off all night so no problem.

Its not that manufacturers aren't interested in saving battery. They are in some way, but the amount of power used by a device when in airplane mode and sleep mode overnight (2-5% over 8hrs, depending on device) is roughly the same amount of power ad different device would use up when in deep sleep mode (off with a timer to restart).

Also, these devices are designed with the expectation that you never turn these off because these are actually invented to keep you connected 24/7.... Its just that some people have different ways of usage.
