Using My S3 as a hard Drive

When I had a Bionic and plugged it into my PC the Bionic showed up as 2 different hard drives each with its own drive designation. When I do same for S3 it does not show up as a drive letter. I believe it shows up as a computer and then I pick phone or card. The overall impact is same except that I used SyncToy2 to keep files on my PC and my Bionic in sync. Since the S3 does not show up as a hard drive the Synctoy2 app will not work.

Is there any way to get the S3 to show up as a hard drive or alternately is there any other way I can easily keep these files in sync (not just copy). I tried an Android APP Cheetah Sync but it will not work on such a large set of files.

Thanks for the suggestion but it appears to me that foldersync but it appears to ne that foldersync syncs by sending the files to the cloud. I do not want to send information on sensitive data to the cloud.

I am looking for an app that will do it by wifi local network or USB.

It sends it wherever you like. I send mine to my NAS over my WLAN, not to the cloud

Maybe I looked up the wrong app. Are you referring to Foldersync by Tacit Dynamics because the description talsk about cloud sync and it does not sound like it does it any other way. There is also a flodersync by t2k269 but it does not appear that this app "sees" my PC and will only sync within the phone.

Please advise.

Hey SU, I've been trying to get foldersync set up to sync to a folder on my local network that I'm connected to with WiFi. It works great for a few FTP accounts I created, but I can't see the option to set up a sync account to a local folder. Do you just use the "dropbox" option for that? Or is there a way to sync to a specific folder on one of your networked computers?

Sorry I missed your post.

Personally I sync to an NTFS RAID NAS on my home LAN (but its the same principle). I created the NAS as an account using its static IP and the network folder I want to use...

With your windows pc, its the same. Just need to ensure you have shared the folders in windows....

This looks very promising but I think I need slightly more help. It appears that I need to setup and account but do not know what type of account I need and what information I need.

My intent is to sync all of my files and folders under "MyDocumnts" on my win 7 64 bit PC with the external SDCard on my S3. The PC Folder is shared and I have my phone and PC on my home network.

Please give me more inforamtion on setting up the account type I need.

I think I might have setup an account successfully using "SMB" and with my IP address but if I did it correctly I still have something wrong because I can not "see" my PC to enable any sync with it.

Ok, so I didnt have a windows PC set up so Ive set one up to show you. You first need to do stuff within Windows.

Go to the folder you want to share, right click > Properties > Sharing > Advanced Sharing. Enable it.. See Screenie below

You then need to know your computer name or IP address and set up an Account in foldersync using type "SMB".

Name the account, specify your computer name or IP address and the name of the share in Start folder as per screenie below...

Put in your login credentials and validate login at the bottom of the page.

From the drop down (In folder sync) locate "File manager" and select, click the Cloud icon at the bottom and check if you can browse your share. If so, you're good to move on.

In the same drop down, choose "Folder pairs" and click "+" to add a new one.

Name it something like "My doc sync" so you know what it is.

Select the account, and select the remote folder to sync (Tick everything you want synced)

Select the local folder to sync to (SD card)

Select sync type (to local, to remote, two way). If you want a mirror of both, its the last one...

Then set your sync schedules further down.. So you can set it to run only if connected to wifi network x. Recommend using the "Advanced" sync where you can set days and times...

I set it up to sync my DCIM folder to my local drive, it was surprisingly easy once you showed me what protocol to use in FolderSync. Now I am trying to see if there is a way of having it sync as soon as a new file (picture) is added to the folder instead of waiting for the scheduled sync.

Okay, I think I have it working. I am running my first full sync so it will take me a while to see if it actually work but it look very promising. Once I do a sync what happens the second time? By that I mean does the app compare file saizes and dates so that it knows what has changed since last sync or does it take the same file to copy again all files?

I don't see "instant sync" as an option in the "folder pairs" settings. I see "advanced" but that doesn't go any where. I don't wan to set it for "every five minutes" and burn battery power. My other account is set up for once a day as that is all that is necessary, but I want my pictures to back up as soon as I take them.

It must just be in the paid version. I have "Foldersync lite" and "instant sync" is not an option as a check box option.

I have my accounts (SMB) and folder pairs set up and it was working fine the other day. My PC (Win 7 64 bit) is a laptop so today when I tried doing a sync it failed and it turns out that my router assigned IP changed from yesterday. So I changed the IP address in the account and the sync worked fine.

Is there a way I can avoid this problem (I have a dynamic IP from mysupplier and I take my laptop to work and then back again to home)?

I'm not SUroot, but I think I can help. You need set your laptop up with a static IP address. To statically assign a LAN IP address you do it on the device itself. You log onto the device and assign the proper static LAN IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and depending on the device DNS server addresses. For pcs you assign this on the network adapter. The IP address must not be in the DHCP pool and not used by any other device. The router does not assign the static IP address.

First, find and record your current LAN Ip settings, like netmask and default gateway, and DNS server. Netmask is usually 255.255.255.0 for most home routers.

Edit your network card properties, and select "manual" address selection. I'd pick something like 192.168.1.2 (next one after router), and set the other parameters the same as what you wrote down.

Musky - I am not proud and willing to accept help from anyone

I tried to follow your directions but I think I am lost. I believe that you are suggesting that I set the static IP on the PC side. So I went into "open network and sharing center" and then went to "change adapter settings" then I right clicked on the wifi connection that I am using and went to "properties" then I clicked on "internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and then clicked on "properties" and then my settings are "obtain an IP address automatically" and "obtain DNS server server address automatically".

Is there the place where I make the changes and if so what should I be putting in?

I believe that I have attached a page from my router setting which you may need to give me advice on what numbers should be used.

Yes, that is the place you assign the IP address you want to use as static.

Since your router is using 192.168.100 to 149, I would use IP address:

192.168.1.10 for the adapter's IP address

With subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Now this can be a little tricky, I believe for the DNS server, if you can't leave it on automatic, you can put in the Gateway addres:

192.168.1.1

If this doesn't work, post back.

Musky - I tried the setting that you suggested and I could net get access to the internet. When I set the IP data as you suggested I could not let it automatically obtain the dns. Do you know what I should use for DNS or have other suggestions?

I don't what I did the second time but now your suggested settings are working but it seems that accessing internet is somewhat slower so I am going to check with my ISP for their suggested settings.

In the mean time I was wondering what will happen when I take the PC to work or to other locations where I connect using wifi, will I have problems because I have set my IP?
