Root Root 4.2?

Go to the sticky above this thread STICKY: Nexus 7 All Things Root Guide. Click the link under 'Rooting Tools'. Follow the guide. Please look around a little bit next time. The stickies contain lots of valuable information and tips. Good luck with your efforts. Members will help if you get into trouble.

If it's not finding the adb device, then it's one of two things. Either USB debugging isn't on under developer options, or the drivers aren't set up correctly. If the drivers contained in the toolkit don't work, you could try downloading the drivers from ASUS's website and use those. Those require manual installation, but that doesn't take long.

i downloaded the new drivers...but how do i put them on my nexus 7

I'm assuming you mean the ASUS drivers from their website. If so, unzip the drivers, then you have to open the device manager while the device is connected in debugging mode. You should see an about android, but not related to mtp. Right click it, and click update drivers. Pick the option to let you choose, and specify the folder where you unzipped the drivers too. Once that finishes, you will have to do the same with the bootloader drivers. Reboot the device into fastboot mode and repeat the same process as you did for the adb drivers. Once both are installed, reboot the device normally and you can begin rooting. Make sure you unlock the bootloader first, which will wipe your device, or else rooting it will fail.
