My boyfriend just bought a Droid Eris and it will be here today! :D

After I charge and activate the phone, what do you guys suggest?

Must have apps?

Best keyboard?

How to preserve battery life?

Anything else?

Thank you muchly! :)

P.S.: This doesn't help the fact that I am PATIENTLY awaiting the release of the Verizon Nexus One...not at all...lol

Swype is a must! You wont find it in the MArket, but here are instructions on getting it. http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/40128-swype-avail-eris.html

Shop Savvy is a cool app for comparing prices on items by scanning the barcode with your phone.

Handcent it the best app IMO for text messaging. The one you get with your Eris is kind of weak.

And the only game i've played so far is Air control. VERY addicting!

Is this really necessary? I have yet to see any post in here titled "Help! I have a virus!" Not sure about you, but I don't download anything that hasn't been reviewed, talked about, etc.

I'm not saying it is absolutely necessary I just think it is a worthwhile d-load. It doesn't bog my phone down and it automatically scans new software when you d-load. I just like the extra "peace of mind". I haven't heard of any virus issues but I like to play it safe.

There were reports in these forums of a virus barnacled to one of the 2.1 leaks being hosted for download.

The anti-V software would have saved a few here from a bit of trouble, I gather. I've never used it, myself.

Frisco, I believe that the virus in question was a PC virus that users were getting when they attempted to download one of the 2.1 leaks from megaupload or one of those sites (from their PC). The phones were not affected. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Oh, that seems far more likely than a phone on Android (Linux) becoming infected. When I saw mention of the virus in a thread or two I just blew by it mainly because it appeared to be quickly resolved by another host being provided.

I wonder why anti-virus software is being developed for Androids.

Like others have said the first thing you should do is root the phone. Get it done before you install ANY apps and that way the setup won't take you several hours once you do get around to rooting it. Its a painless process will take all of about 20-30 minutes and once its completed you will have full control and the ability to do full backups. Without being rooted you won't be able to backup copy protected apps and even if you do backup non-copy protected apps those apps won't be linked to the app store. Once rooted get titanium backup (paid version, get the free version first) and once you get the phone setup how you want it, do a backup. It saves all your user settings, app settings, market links, etc. Then after the titanium backup do a nandroid backup, this will make a copy of your entire flash memory system for use later on, actually this should be your second nandroid backup, the first backup should be done right after you install amons recovery image. Then you will be able to enjoy the phone on 2.1 (i suggest using sense-able v2 when flashing the rom) and you won't have to go through resetting everything up later on. But trust me rooting the phone is the 1st thing you want to do. Don't be worried you won't ruin the phone, i promise. If you need any help most of us are available on the everything root section pretty much all day.

After rooting:

Titanium Backup
Wireless Tethering
Swype
Auto Mount
Astro
Speed Test
Wifi Analyzer
Bar Code Scanner

Seidio 1750mah battery is also a must have imo.
