Hey guys, I'm pretty new to overclocking and although I've searched these forums (and others) I cannot seem to find what I am looking for.

I kind of understand the whole kernel idea and how I need to install using update.zip, but then there also seems to be another way to do it using the ClockworkMod Recovery (I think) and Rom Manager (and maybe cyanogen?), and then you use different kernels or something.

Anyways, I was wondering if someone could explain those steps or link me to an explanation, and then the more pressing issue I have, is what is the difference between the two methods, the kernels, etc?

im not quite sure what you are looking for. Koush recently made a template that would allow any kernel to work for any Rom. Which might be what you are thinking of.

Rom manager allows you to install kernels and you can download it from the market. Right now there are P3Droids kernels(which work for any rom) and Bekits kernels which work for cyanogenmod. Rom manager is pretty easy to use.

But overclocking is basically install kernel then install setcpu then set clock speed.

Not much to it.

Just keep in mind that all phones (to a degree) behave differently. Overclocking (just like on a PC) involves trial and error. While there are some definite incompatibilities with certain kernels and certain ROMs and specific ROOM features, what runs great on my Droid might not run at the same speed/temp on yours. Some Droid run great at 1300mhz, other crap at at 1000. Another note, before flashing a new kernel, disable SetCPU and then crank it up after the ROM is installed (avoids some problems). I also disable SetCPU when updating ROMs and I am sure everything is booting up and running well.
