Root Will rooting my phone unlock it ?

Hi, I just bought a Verizon Moto Droid 3 from ebay and I want to unlock it so I can use it in Europe with my sim card. Before spending money in a code, I would like to know if rooting it and flashing another rom in it will unlock it.
I just registered the forum now, because this is my first android phone, but I've known this forum for a long time because me and my friends are constantly trying new custom roms in our phones. Cyanogen, mostly.

The only sure way to unlock it is to keep it for 8 months at least in the USA on a Verizon Wireless contract in good standing and then ask them please for an unlock code. I did that on my old Droid3 and it worked just fine, but for you it might be totally impractical.

I would buy an unlock code from a vendor that will refund to you if it does not work.

There are ways to replace the radio on a D3 with one that will allow it to be used on ATT or Tmobile (with some data issues) in the USA, despite Verizon, but even those methods require the phone to be first unlocked some way. There is no backdoor for unlocking a Droid3 that I have heard about, though the vendors of unlock codes must have something that works at least some of the time. Good luck - and if you find something let us know because I have two more Droid3's that I want to unlock for non-Verizon use. My current phone is a CDMA Galaxy Nexus and it is impossible to use on GSM at all, far as I can tell, so pretty nearly worthless outside the USA.

I was wondering if there have been any developments on this. Looks like I made the same expensive mistake and bought a Verizon Motorola Droid 3 over the net because I like the phone, thinking there would be a way to unlock it. One mobile unlock service has already advised they can't find a code for my IMEI, and Cellunlocker. net has so many negative reviews that I don't dare...

If you have not tried them already, I used unlock4moto.com for two Droid 3 handsets; both codes worked perfectly. I only wanted them unlocked for international use. $6 for an unlock code, and you get it within 30 minutes by email.
