Root Problems rooting my opitmus V

I have zv5. I put gingerbreak zip file on my sd card. When i open it with file manager its just text and code. Help?

You might need to rename it .apk or redownload it.

That was just the approach/steps I took to rooting...

Anyway, there is supposedly a simpler all-in-one rooting approach using the same exploit/steps--although I've never try it personally. FYI:

That is most likely the problem if the OP had tried downloading with IE, as the file is downloaded with a changed file extension from APK to ZIP. Thus, as suggested, simply renaming would fix that. Or try downloading with another browser other than IE (e.g., Firefox or Chrome).

Download Dolphin Browser from the PlayStore. Go to the XDA site where the Gingerbreak.apk is located. Download the 1.20 version from Chainfires 2 post (most important). Move the zip to the root of the sd card. Unzip. Tap on the .apk. Select install.
When it is finished select Done.
Make sure you go to menu/applications/development/check the USB Debugging box.
Now go to the Gingerbreak app that is in the app drawer and run it.
If it auto boots the phone you are rooted. If not pull battery and try again (could take as many as ten tries, but will never harm your phone).
Go to the PlayStore and update the Superuser app.

This will explain how to get a custom recovery installed (and a custom ROM if that is what you need), and how to make the all important backup of your stock ROM. This is very, very important and must be done once you are rooted.
