Root [Boost Mobile] List of Safe-to-Remove System Apps (or, How to De-bloat Your Boost Mobile Galaxy S3)

So tonight I just broke the 1200 MB available ram barrier and I'm going to share how I did it. Well I used Titanium Backup Pro to freeze pretty much every single system app I didn't need running and could safely disable without causing problems. My safe-to-remove list is essentially a compendium of other people's safe-to-remove lists for a few different devices (*almost* zero guesswork involved!) and so far no issues over here, but as always,

If you turn off system apps that you actually do need then you might have a very perplexing experience trying to sort out what exactly did you do to throw your phone off-balance - or your phone might not even work at all. So be smart about it - if you turn off VPN for example and you actually need to use it then it's not going to work - when in doubt, leave the system app alone until you know what it does. Also, NEVER disable your launcher if you only have one (default launcher is called TouchWiz home) - it can be safely frozen but only if and ONLY if you have a different stable launcher in its place. Also, there are two apps called Downloads, and you can only safely remove the one whose icon appears in your user applications list, i.e. do not disable the Downloads system app with the green android robot icon. So again, proceed with caution and happy de-bloating!

So I'll edit this post some other time and make it look prettier/less cluttered, but in the meantime this is the list that Titanium Backup Pro generated for me of all the system apps that I just froze (with the exception of TouchWiz since everyone must always at all times have at least one launcher installed!) There are more system apps that can be safely removed than just these however I intend to continue using them, just like you will probably intend to continue using at least one app from this list of system apps which I gladly disabled on my phone. The great thing about Titanium Backup Pro is if I do ever need to use one of these apps again I can just go back in, defrost the app, then freeze it again when I'm done.

So just for disclosure, my plans are to do a system reset then redo this list with all apps that are safe for removal, then post a separate list in the first comment for all apps that are not safe to remove. I'm getting some weird dns issues with opera mobile but not internet or chrome, on certain wifi networks but not all, and never over mobile data. Defrosting all system apps does not fix this problem. When trying to determine when this issue started, my thought is it could have something to do with the rootzip, or it could have nothing to do with that. Every once in a while opera will crash and start repeatedly flashing superuser granted with no apparent reason, since no prompt is issued and I've never approved root access for anything remotely related to the browser. I went into SuperSU and it wanted to update the binary and uninstall a conflicting SU app at the same time. Now the root prompt looks different and SuperSU log is empty. Weirdness. So yeah, when I have enough time to do a full reset I'll update these lists; hopefully my dns issue will go away.

Anyone have any issues with freezing any of the apps on this list? I am after all basing this list off other people's lists, which could have some apps listed that shouldn't be disabled. Other than my dns issue (which does not apparently correlate to the frozen apps list), I haven't seemed to have had any problems.

So you can get started sooner and not wait till you're ready to do a full reset, you can just make a recovery backup, factory reset, freeze app(s), test, and when done/tired just restore you saved backup.

I just spent a few hours working with a fresh system reset trying to compile a list of unsafe-to-remove system apps and well, my results were inconclusive but were approximately equivalent to the exact opposite of the list I already posted. So now I'm back on my nandroid backup, I've used up pretty much all the allotted time I'm willing to work on that this weekend, and I have a ton of actual work to do. If anybody who has any combination of more available time, patience, and knowledge than myself feels like creating their own version of this data, I'll add it to the posts at the top of the thread.

Also, unless doing a full odin restore of the stock rom would fix my wifi issue, I'm going to blame the wifi itself for the troubles I've been experiencing. The particular network in question drops signal frequently on my laptop but my S3 says nothing, so I'm assuming that the phone gets dropped too but doesn't notice.

if you going to be tethering for long periods of time you may need to disable connection optimizer

Fantastic job there bud. To anyone else looking at this list I would STRONGLY caution you to take it with a giant grain of salt. The list in the link a few posts up is much much safer. not only should this NOT be stickied, it should be deleted.

First off you made a back up right? In every phone in every section everybody always says make a backup make a backup. And it is always known to try anything when rooting your phone use at your own risk. Also I would never delete all of those at once I would try 3 or 4 at a time see how the phone and then do 3 or 4 more this way when you mess up your phone you will know what you did wrong and know how to fix it.

As far as the stock messaging app, I never delete mine anymore. Every time I have done so in the past, I cannot receive messages through my 3rd party app. The best way to use a 3rd party messaging app is to open up the stock app, locate NOTIFICATIONS and uncheck the box beside it. Then back out of the stock app. I then open up the 3rd party app I use, Chompsms. I open its settings and at the top there is an area asking if I wish to make Chompsms my default messaging app. I select yes and then reboot. When done correctly, everything works perfectly.


As far as the issues you are having with your phone now, just restore a recovery backup. Hopefully you made one before you started removing apps from that list. As Cwhatever said, it's best to remove a few apps at a time too. Not only is it easier on your phone..... it makes it much easier to troubleshoot the app which caused the problem.

This list was also made for MG2... I doubt every app would apply on MK5 or whatever stock rom is these days... and all the custom roms too.

Its probably not. But just make a backup and use Titanium backup and freeze or delete 5 at a time and give a little time to see what happens and try things out, if ok then try 5 more and repeat the same process. This way if you mess up the phone just restore the last backup and then try 1 of the last 5 at a time until you use one and it messes up then you know which one not to use. Then continue on. Takes a while but works out great to debloat.
