is there a messaging app in the LTE version?

planning to get the GF a nexus 7 for xmas. her flyer is stuck on honeycomb,and doesnt work very well at times for someone who is not "electronicly savy"

thinking of getting an LTE version,so if she wanted to swap her sim into it while away from home she could still use it.

for anyone running an LTE version,is there a stock messaging app?

i realize i could set up google vice and voice ip,or use a 3rp party app like text free now,but thats not really a good option in this case.

if theres not a stock messaging app,is it accessible by rooting(it will be either way if it lives at my house )

I'm perplexed at how messaging is handled. When activated on jellybean, they're was no app, but yet I was getting text messages from T-Mobile in the stock messaging app that I could access via the notifications. Haven't tried it since the kitkat update and the merging into hangouts though.

thanks for the info. my gsm jetstream actually has an accessible messiging app. i think ill spring for the gsm version and hope theres a way to access it.

have you tried installing a 3rd party app like go sms and see if you can access texts that way?

Not too intensely, just noticed that they're listed as incompatible on the play store. Haven't attempted sideloading though.

There are several apps for messaging. One I use is MightyText. I can text and receive texts and i syncs to my phone. You install the app on the phone and on the N7 and link them.

There's also a few others.

Is that app creating a second phone number? Or is it using this number from the sim card?

I just checked, and Go SMS is compatible with my Wife's 2012 Nexus 7, so why wouldn't it be compatible with the 2013, both WiFi and LTE? Can't it just send and receive texts over WiFi?

apps like go sms and handcent send sms in the traditional manner,so you need to have an actual phone number(and sim card in this particular case). you can send sms over wifi with google voice if you set up a GV number,and apps like "text free now",wich create a phone number to text to and from.

having said that,my LTE n7 arrived amazingly fast so after accidentally falling asleep about 8:30 pmeek, i got up in the middle of the night last night to mess with it. unlocked and rooted,and installed go sms right from the play store,so it is compatible. didnt look like handcent was available,tho several skins were,so maybe i just didnt look hard enuff.

i also flashed this mod,wich uncovered the setting to change the default mms app from hangouts: [MOD][4.4][KRT16S] SMS for the Nexus 7 LTE (2013) - xda-developers

after flashing the mod i was able to select go sms as the default app. after she goes to sleep tonight ill pop in one of my sim cards and see if can send/recieve sms and mms to and from that phone number with either go sms,or hangouts. im not really seeing any reason it wont work,but ill let yall know for sure after i try it.

I tried to install and was told it wasn't compatible the N7 (2013)

Verizon has an app that uses my phone for texts. Works like Mighty Text does on my tab and Mac. That's a solution if you are on their network.

I'd have expected Might Text to update compatibility at some point. I'm surprised they haven't already

I have a wi-fi Nexus 7 2nd gen, and I use GrooVe Ip for txt messaging.

Go sms actually does a good job on nexus 7 2013 for messaging.

I have wondered about this because it has a phone number assigned to it.
In fact AT&T even gave me the phone number.

I may try to stuff my tablet sim into a phone just to see...

Scotty, Come up with anything in your hunt for texting and the like?

Go sms was working fine for sms,just not mms. I have recently learned you can input apn settings into the go sms app,wich has worked to allow mms on my vzw DNA on straight talk. It may work on the nexus,but I haven't had a chance to try it yet
