Need to increase video recording time (VZW)

hey guys,

got an LG G2 (VZW) not too long ago, and needed to figure out a way to increase video recording time. I tried installing a few apps, but they all seem to cap off at around 28-30 minutes. I don't need a fancy video recorder, just one that'll record for a longer time period (about 3-4 hours), as well as youtube uploading capability. having a pause function would be awesome, but not necessary

in case you're wondering, my phone is unrooted. is that the issue? I just had a tech desk guy from a university help me out (they're pretty knowledgeable), and he said it's probably LG's software restrictions which are the culprit

any suggestions?

Could be. Could also be that you're running out of storage. No way to tell if it's Verizon's restriction placed by LG, or LG's restriction, without knowing someone who knows. (Unless it says something like "30 minute video recording time" in the book.)

Without intending to be a smart-alec, why would you want to record videos that long (3 - 4 hours) on a regular basis? Also uploading large files over cellular (multi-gigs easily) would eat up data fast, and even if unlimited would invoke carrier caps and throttling. With Wi-Fi, I could understand but it would still be slow transferring files that large.

Again, without being smart about it -- it doesn't sound like using a smartphone to record videos would be in your best interests. Perhaps either a dedicated vidcam or a wireless security camera (that streams to a PC) would better serve you than a phone?

all the 30 minute videos that are recorded are the same size, 4GB, so I know it's not a storage issue, since there are still about 20GB available

I'm in college, and want to record lectures by professors, and upload to youtube so my classmates can also view them if necessary. considering that I just bought the phone, I'm trying to avoid spending more money on those things, especially considering that it'd be more work involving multiple devices, instead of just one

for your concern, I would be transferring over WiFi, and it wouldn't matter if uploading were a bit slow.

I might have unrealistic expectations, but a few things:

1) I've heard overwhelmingly gushing reviews about this phone (which swayed me in getting this phone)
2) I know not all phones have this restriction, so there has to be a way to get it to work
3) because of all the nifty features, speedy processor, and enhanced capabilities of THIS phone, I want to USE the phone and not have to invest in other things, which, as mentioned above, would be more money and more work involved

BTW, don't mean to be condescending or demanding, if it came across that way.

No no, now the question makes sense to me. And why my suggestion(s) of a security cam, etc. are now out of the question.

You didn't sound condescending at all -- the why just didn't make sense to me, but does now.

I'll mull it over, but nothing jumps out as a solution for you that I can think of. I assume you've tried reducing the resolution? I now see why you need video (diagrams and notes) so I understand also why just audio is out of the question; and possibly why lower resolution may not be ideal.

Just guessing but possibly the size limit was intentional by LG (not envisioning your use). 4 GB is also a max size limit on some [older] file systems, wonder if that's coincidence?

reduce the quality to 720p. that should give you a longer record time.

I haven't played with video with my G2 much but on my Nexus 4 I had considerably shorter record time when set to 1080 than 720 and the max size file i could record was less than 3 gig when i had maybe 4 times the space having the 16gb version. It could be that video requires storage space to use as cache or buffer while recording.

I tried this as well, and got a slightly longer recording time, but no where close to the desired amount of 3-4 hours.

that was one of the first things that I found when I was researching the problem. the issue is the 4GB limit. that's the main issue IMO. if anyone knows how to get around that, I think the recording time will be solved. It's either an android or LG limitation, not individual apps which are restricting me.

any suggestions on how to possibly change the codecs or tinker the software to get it to work? I know I'm probably gonna have to root my phone to do this, but if someone knows exactly how to do it, I'd be really grateful

Perhaps there is some form of security camera app that will do compression or a camera program that will do time lapse.

you guys have helped me out a ton, and I really appreciate it, but I have one more (dumb) question. . . is it possible to simultaneously record and upload directly to youtube, or any other video hosting site (dailymotion, etc.), without it being stored on my phone? like a direct, one step process of recording via my G2 and uploading to youtube or other video hosting site?

I've been researching this for the past hour, but this is a very technical thing which requires in depth knowledge of app development. here's the page I'm referring to
