Help 3 Newbie Questions, (new to the G2)

Hello All,

I'm new to the G2 and have several questions that I could not find answers to elsewhere. Maybe someone will know:

1) Is it "normal or standard" that Wi-Fi will always "turn itself on" whenever I have my G2 turned on and plug it into the wall charger? Seems odd to me, but maybe that's standard for some reason? I've noticed that if my G2 is off, and I plug it into the charger, then take it out of the wall charger and turn the G2 on, Wi-Fi is not turned on in that case, only when the G2 is on, and then I plug it into the wall charger, it will then always turn on the Wi-Fi.

2) I notice that when I turn my G2 on from off, until I unlock (I use pattern unlock), I get a intermittent flashing Icon in the top left corner of the notification bar, that looks like a "rectangle with an eyeball in it".....what the heck is that about? As soon as I unlock the G2, then the intermittent flashing Icon will not appear anymore.

3) Which leads to another good question: Where can I find a chart that simply lists "all" the potential Icons that will display in the status/notification bar areas? A google search will produce limited Icons charts, but obviously not a full list. I can't find the above noted "rectangle with eyeball" Icon anywhere. Nor others I've seen. There must be some kind of master chart that lists all the potential Icons somewhere?

Thanks for any and all help with these questions.

greatly appreciative,

I'll try to address number two and three.
number two when I Google it I get....
at&t screen wise. Don't know what it is. Maybe you can find out more.

regarding three:

choose Apps icon then find the help app. on the vzw model, you can call up an icon list and also user manual and see some self help videos.

I don't see the icon you describe, maybe because I'm on vzw, or maybe it's a relatively new feature rolled out by your carrier.

well since stef answered 3 and a cloudy 2.... I will answer 1 and clarify 2 :)

yes its very normal for the wifi to be turning itself on..... this phone wants to be on wifi as often as it can

the icon youre seeing as stef pointed out.... on ATT its called screen wise........on VZW its called smart screen.....

its an optical recognition program...... as long as the phone can see your eyeballs the screen will stay on.......... once it cannot detect your eyeballs the screen will turn off

this prevents your phone from going to sleep while youre reading something, etc.

you can turn it on or off in the display settings

Not sure about this but regarding #1, try pressing on settings > WiFi, while on that screen, again press your settings button (the 3 horizontal lines in lower corner) and choose advanced WiFi settings. I'm wondering if the "keep WiFi on during sleep" option were set to "only when plugged in" if it might do that. If so, change it to "always".

Hi iowabowtech,

Thanks for your response to my question about "why the Wi-Fi keeps turning itself on when I charge my battery".

Yep, I already had the Wi-Fi options setting "off" under the "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep". So that doesn't stop it from turning on.

best regards,

Hello DILands,

The handoff between LTE and Wi-Fi is seemless, no problems there. It's excellent.

And yes, there is a very easy way to turn off Wi-Fi when desireable. They make that part very straight forward and easy.

My issue/question about Wi-Fi was simply that it seemed odd, that when Wi-Fi was off, (as I normally have it) why does it turn itself on when I have my phone on and plug it into the charger?

I can't find a good answer to that question, other than what copestag noted in the previous post to my question, where copestag stated: "its very normal for Wi-Fi to be turning itself on".

I'm left to guess that the answer to my question is that its some kind of default function the maker of the operating system designed into the G2?

If I'm incorrect on that, I hope someone can step up with a solid answer?

best regards,

OK - I'm getting mine on Thursday and have a relevant question - How is the "Handoff" from LTE and Wifi and back? I've never had an LG - I've had some phones that were pretty bad. If it's a problem - is there any way to disable Wifi?

Short version? Just leave Wi-Fi turned off. Aside from weird cases like the OPs where it's enabling it under charging conditions, which isn't a normal thing. I leave my Wi-Fi off unless I'm home, then I manually turn it on and connect. I turn it off when I leave the house again, mostly just because I hate the "Open connection available" messages from time to time.

Otherwise, I don't seem to have any major issues coming from one to the other. Though in my case, I go through a lot of LTE, 3G, no service, and Wi-Fi at home cycles. The only time I notice, is if I'm streaming something, and depending on what, it might hiccup during the change. Rarely, it'll stop playing altogether and then I just go back hit Play and it reconnects and goes.

Got the definitive answer, here's the deal with the Wi-Fi turning on when I plug my G2 into the charger......

I'm on SPRINT...they have an optional function under the "mobile networks settings" called the "connection optimizer".

If you have the connection optimizer turned on, the G2 will look for ways to best connect to mobile networks under various scenarios. Being plugged into the charger while your G2 is on, is one of those scenarios. Therefore the G2's Wi-Fi will turn itself on under this circumstance.

As soon as the "connection optimizer" option is switched off, the Wi-Fi will not turn on while plugged into the charger.

Learn something new every day with this G2

best regards to all who helped find the answer,
