how do i add album/artist/song title info to sound files?

Not quite sure where to put this post, but it's about attaching to mp3 files album, artist and song information so your music player will know how to classify them by, well, album, artist and song. This post is not about the music player that comes with any tab, this is about tagging or adding that info to music, audio or other or mp3 files.

You can't do that with Android, at least not that I have been able to discover. So when I download an mp3, whatever info is already designated as it's album, artist and trac name is what I'm stuck with. I can't change it or add it in case it has none. So my music player is a jumbled mess since I can't arrange tracks I've downloaded by album, artist and track name. You can do this with a windows or Mac machine. Why not Android? I need to be able to do that. But how can I? Is there an app which will allow this to be done with mp3 and other audio files in the Android environment?

This does not pertain to music or files bought from the Google play store since they have that info already correctly attached to them.

I use iTunes to convert and save my CD's. All of the info is automatically saved. I will often need to add the cover art which I usually get from Wikipedia. Then I just copy the albums from my computer to my phone/tablet. Everything usually copies over.

I have iTag, but it's far easier to do it on your computer (itunes, etc) before transferring it all.

"Shuttle" music player(Google App Store<paid version>) allows you to edit the ID tags as well as being a fantastic music player with EQ.

I tried a number of the tag editors on the Play Store a while back and most were able to update things like Artist, Album and Track details however none were able to update things like Genre.

In the end, I would up using Windows Explorer. Select the file, click the more details link in the bottom window and most of the details are editable. A further benefit was that typing etc was easier on my laptop

One thing MS implemented correctly..... file metadata. This fact makes even the much-maligned Windows Media Player useful.

I use iTunes to manage all my music. I like the ability to edit the common pieces of meta data for an album/cd at one time. Only thing I don't do in mass is track number and song title.

I found the "Genre" tag was always a mess back in the day, and every program wanting to do it's own thing. I had hundreds of MP3s downloaded and tagged via Winamp, but iTunes insisted they were all "Blues". ...it gave me the blues.

Think most people used WMP, and so became the standard?

I recommend Mp3tag. It is a windows based program and it was free.. probably still is. I like it because it will allow mass metadata editing. If your library is large... it makes the work a lot easier/faster. It will glean the proper tags from the file naming structure or you can input the information. It is a matter of cleaning up the tags and then porting them to your phone/tablet however.

I agree - Mp3Tag is probably the best Windows option, certainly my preference if I'm forced to use Windows.

For Linux users like me there are many free options available both text-based and GUI but my vote goes to EasyTag, a GTK+ based program that works well on any Linux desktop and has a very similar feature set to Mp3Tag for Windows.

For me, the easiest way to edit tags, etc. is thru PowerAMP Pro. (My media player). I can change/add/edit pretty much everything for any MP3/audio file, etc. within the app its self. I can even create my own genre. (Which I was cool since some music didn't have the genre I wanted.) When I ripped my 100+ CD collection to our computer, using Windows Media Player, it pretty much placed songs from the same album in different Genre's. (This was a pain when I wanted to play certain Genre music on my phone.) Once I transferred everything to my S4, I just used PowerAMP to clean things up and organize my music and other audio files.

I still use iTunes as it lets me manage the music in bulk or individually. When it comes time to transfer the music to the Galaxy S4, The only software I found that worked consistently with iTunes, Windows 8, and the S4 was "Easy Phone Sync". It is a software collaboration between Samsung and Mushroom Media (the developers of the software). It is FREE, so another bonus. It only copies playlist though, so I make sure the music I want to transfer is in a playlist, or added to an existing one in iTunes. When it copies the music, it copies the files into folders based on the album artist, and also copies the folder jpg picture file. So far it hasn't let me down.
