Managing without an internal SD card

I'm looking forward to (probably) getting my first nexus phone soon, though it would be my first Android phone sans memory card.

What, if anything, do some of you folks do to manage your space without expandable storage?

Otg with flash drive, mini SD port adapter, cloud storage. Pretty much the same routine since my nexus 7 (2012).

I stopped holding music on my phone, paid for a Slacker Radio plus subscription ($3/mo), enabled dropbox sync for photos, and I've never had a problem.

I use my multi terabyte Synology DiskStation NAS equipped home network as my repository for my files of all types.

From there I can offload music, videos, etc to any one of a number of the media choices I maintain for mobile use. I travel rather extensively for work and personal. Having this setup is priceless.

OTG cable is a great option, especially for transferring large files.

Google are in the business of cloud storage so they want you to buy their cloud service. this is one reason why they give some phones two years of free google drive storage (they also had agreements with dropbox). this way you can get dependent on it in that time..

ive the one max and am thinking about this phone plus the nex 9 due to Android L and the one max has internal storage but i also use google drive, dropbox, mega, and sky drive (msn) PLUS OTG so i am covered.

my suggestion to the op is get on the OTG bandwagon if you dont want to fool around with cloud, but having cloud backups is wise so definitely take advantage of some free storage options at least.

I use GDrive on the reg as it is now, mostly to manually back up my camera roll (the auto sync stuff scares me lol) plus some miscellaneous files. I'm not worried about filing up my free space on there since I can just move older stuff to my big HDD at home if need be. I'd definately want keep my music stored locally.

I guess the next question would be, about how much space would be left on the phone after the OS and all that stuff? I don't shoot a ton of video or keep many games, but I take a fair amount of pictures, plus store my music. Wounder if it'd be worth another 50 bucks for the extra storage, on an already crazy expensive device.

i use google drive to backup the htc one max. i use photobucket to store photos, so all the storage on google drive is backup.

so many cloud options out there. look at mega (https://mega.co.nz) as well. i use that for videos to share.

I'm sure cloud storage is fine, provided you have a truly unlimited data plan. If it's metered and are paying by the GB, or are subject to fair usage or other limits. Start streaming all your music or whatever else, could either become extremely expensive, or your not streaming at all because you've exceeded your fair usage quota, and have been throttled or cut completely. If you're doing any foreign travel and leaving the United States, you'll lose access to all your music, movies etc, because of MPAA and RIAA geo-restrictions.

there are compromises to be made, even with flash based storage. used to be 1gb was overkill at one time in history. now look...

if you have access to wifi most often, you can offload things at will, and wifi is cropping up more and more all over. just depends on what works.

Your point is valid of course, and one has to weigh what works best for them. for me, cloud storage+OTG+more cellular data than I need per month will work just fine in my case.

Wi-Fi is in many places, I've seen it on long haul flights, Singapore Airlines $15 USD per hour, many buses and trains have it as well. However with all of them I've seen, they do state as being unsuitable for YouTube and other streaming. OK for tweeting, email, basic browsing, and the like.

My situation is, I travel a lot, trains, buses and planes.

On a normal day, 32 would be good enough for me but a 64 GB Nexus is just too hard to pass up.

I could probably manage with 32 gigs; my Nexus 7 (2013) tablet is a 32 gig model and I still have about 7 gigs of free space left . But for only $50 more the 64 gig model helps future-proof me as I don't know what may happen the down the road.

If it were a $100 or more difference, it might give me pause, but at $50 it's a no-brainer for me to go with the higher capacity version.

SD card is usually a must.. but with all the lockdown on recent devices root is far more important. I haven't decided if I'm going to pick it up or not. My S5 still serves me well.

This is where I'm at. I had to use my LG g3 without a spare battery until my free charging kit arrived last week and I forgot how bad it sucked having to charge my phone multiple times a day. If the n6 had a removable battery I would've bought it day 1. I still may hold out to see if anyone makes an extended battery case for it though.

I'm planning on 64GB.

One of the terrific features of Android is that I can copy some of my mission critical computer/work files over to it. Then for a quick trip across country to attend a one day meeting, I have my files without having to bring either my laptop or external drive.

A major advantage is how fast & easy it is for me to use my Android for so much more than just the kinds of things we normally associate with smartphones.

I enjoy taking advantage of every conceivable function my Androids are good for

how big is 5.0 OS? what if its like 17 gigs and eats up half of my 32 gig storage out the box...?!
