Help If I factory reset, how do I back up my stuff?

Ok, so I am experiencing crazy battery drain, freezing, backing out of apps and other issues with that. And so on....

I have an Acer Chromebook. How do I back up all my shit, i.e. apps, texts, contacts, etc?

I plan on doing this after I get Lollipop. I should have done it way sooner. Was just too lazy and uninformed. I've got a decent amount of bugs that I want gone. A fellow coworker of mine is having no issues with his N5.

Any help would be great. Otherwise, I may have to get something else.

Thanks, guys!

Start with defining what you need to backup.
  • Pictures - enabled G+ auto backup
  • Contacts - store on Gmail (or outlook.com etc) - backed up automatically
  • Calendar - store on Gmail (or outlook.com etc) - backed up automatically
  • Apps: There is really no need to backup apps specifically - apps will be re-downloaded when you connect to the play store. What you likely meant was 'app settings/data'. The backup process for these will vary, but usually, you can go into the settings for the app, and look for options to back those up into a file. Back up those individual files to cloud storage (box/dropbox/copy/GoogleDrive/OneDrive etc)
  • Texts: You will need to use some app to do this - search the play store for SMS backup restore apps and pick one of the popular/highly-rated ones. I usually don't backup/restore SMS because I don't need it.
There are apps like Helium that can do a full backup, but I don't know if it will backup to Chromebook.

You may want to look into ADB Backup directly - apparently, it may work just fine even on chromebook

What I have always done is use "ES file explorer" from play store, it has a feature where you can back up all user apps and system apps including data. It's all stored on the sd card. After a factory reset you can just reinstall everything and boom, all done.

Does that work on non-rooted devices? The only app I know of that can backup / restore app data is Helium.

As above set contacts, calendar and photos to backup to Google servers.

You could then use the trial of mybackup pro to do messages and app data. I'd backup your apps as well as sometimes play won't download everything.

There is also a backup option in settings which should backup APNs and some other data.

Interesting. The last time I used it on an unrooted phone it didn't backup app data. Also, the Google Play page for the app says it will backup app data if rooted.

I think it definitely backs up more when rooted, but most stuff in the user folder/sd card seems to be backed up. I think she just had to log back into a few apps, and maybe a few settings went back to default, but otherwise seemed to save everything she wanted porting to the new handset. We can't root as it disables our banking app and catchup TV.

Not tried helium, but MBUP seems to be the best backup app I've tried.

Most of the responses I've read involve an SD card. Is there something I'm missing? I was pretty sure there is no SD card slot on these phones. Looks like I might just manually reinstall everything after the reset. That is, if I dont jump ship to the nexus 6. That phone is just a beast!
