I will root for free wifi tether. 10$-20$ adds up over time. Also, rooting gets rid of bloatware and makes the phone run overall faster with tweaks. My Hero compared to the incredible is only slightly slower opening apps, but is definitely slower browsing. Before rooting it was very frustrating, now it's good, but not great, hopefully the Evo will be great.
i will root for the custom roms and tethering options
here's a guide to rooting. it describes the in and outs of rooting, the goods, the bads. and all that stuff
[Complete Guide] How To Flash A Custom ROM To Your Android Phone With ROM Manager + Full Backup & Restore | Android News, Reviews, Applications, Games, Phones, Devices, Tips, Hacks, Videos, Podcasts - Android Police
That guide is so outdated it should be on display at the Smithsonian. You don't need to root anymore to install a custom ROM or tether. But if you think rooting will give you access to Sprint's mobile hotspot feature good luck with that.
There are like 3 other posts about rooting so I won't explain everything again for the third time just search for the other posts.
why do you have to be so defensive? i just posted a link... if you know more, thats fine. if you don't have anything else ebtter to say, don't post
Not being defensive, just trying to correct every single root post on this forum so the many users who will think oh cool custom ROM let me go root my phone and open it up to dozens of security holes just so I can do something that can be done without rooting at all.
Rooting is not necessary anymore to install a custom ROM or tether. Encouraging new uninformed users to root their phones and open up a whole new ball of security holes on their devices which could easily contain sensitive information, that's why I chime in on these posts.
well honestly, there are people who don't read another other section beyond the evo section. i don't own or driod or a driod incredible, i don't go into their section and read.
to be more informative perhaps you should post a link to the general rooting discussion or something of that sort
Already have, in the EVO section in fact.
EDIT: Here I'll do the work fr you:

thanks, finished reading, but i do not have a conclusion. most of the stuff were post by you and many have disagreed. i will have to disagree with you until you can be proven right.
Are you talking about rooting and then modifying or replacing the ROM? I have only a basic knowledge of the specifics of Android but on any *NIX I have played with, having root privileges doesn't lead to performance increase in and of itself.
Until I get my Evo and start learning first-hand, this is something I would love people to educate me on. Never hesitate to call BS or correct any misconceptions I might have.
Yes, replacing with a ROM. Most ROM's are tweaked to be faster, remove bloatware, and to enjoy wifi tether. I am no expert, but can tell a big difference in how well my fresh 2.1 ROM runs, compared to stock 1.5
Since when do you not need to root install a custom ROM.....
thats what im trying to figure out. If i can install eclair on a g1 without rooting, that would be fantastic. I have my g1 rooted, but there are some other issues that i am having, and if its easier than the method where you root first, then that's awesome.
