Help Can't update to android 6.0

I have a rooted HTC Desire 626s (MetroPCS), currently with Android 5.1, and I've been trying to update it all day . Every time I try to install the update it stops around 30% and replaces the green symbol with a red triangle with an exclamation point in the middle, then rebooting the phone.

1.) I searched the internet for answers the first answer was linked to my phone being rooted. So I unrooted the phone, rebooted it then tried again, getting the same result as before.

2A.) The second answer I found on the HTC help paged advised me to update all of my apps, so naturally I tried to do that. A simple task, right?

2B.) Google Play constantly crashed either when I tried to update an app or before it even loaded. I also searched for an answer for this, and what I found was that I need to check for any system updates and install them, but the only update available is the 6.0.1 update, which keeps failing.

3.) The last and simplest answer I found was to do a factory reset. I did that, went through the setup process again, then tried to update once again, also getting the same result.

Is there any way for me to update my phone?

If you have a custom recovery then the update will always fail, since it needs the stock recovery to install.

To be honest I would return the phone completely to stock (i.e. use an RUU as described above) before accepting an over the air update anyway. "unrooting" may not clean out all changes to the system, and the update is designed for an unmodified phone, so it is safer to do the job properly.

A third option is to see whether anyone has made a custom ROM based on the newer OS version, and if so use that instead of the stock update.

I completely agree with you, at first I was going to wait for somebody to make a ROM with the new OS but decided it would be a better idea to just go with the RUU and have a clean install

I have the same device, and was in the same situation.
I used the RUU to update(I did not relock my boot loader, it worked without having to): http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-desire-626s-metro-pcs/news/
-you will need a PC

Note: the RUU WILL erase all data on the device, backup important files first and move your music/pics/Vids etc... to your SD card.

Also, XDA has a forum for this device: http://forum.xda-developers.com/desire-626

I'll be around for additional help
I just tried using the RUU and this failed too, or I did something wrong.
HTC Sync Manager is up to date, and I'm pretty sure the RUU I downloaded (the link all the way at the bottom of the help page, right?) was also correct.
After going through the setup process, it stopped during the update again, frozen on this page:

IIRC after this the RUU stopped and said to use the correct one and try again.
The hard reset isn't working and I don't want to remove the battery, in fear of shocking myself. Should I wait for the battery to drain, recharge , it then try again, or is there another option?

The RUU has to have the correct "customer id", i.e. it must match the region/carrier the phone was originally sold for. It must also not be for an older version of the firmware than the phone is currently running.

If you are S-Off there are ways round those restrictions, but otherwise you have to find the correct RUU before it will work.

Yes the ruu was the one at the bottom of the page.

That's strange.

Is your boot loader unlocked or did you relock it? Also do you have the stock recovery installed? Just for precautions.

The RUU has worked for me and another user when we left our boot loaders unlocked and also flashed the stock recovery. http://forum.xda-developers.com/desire-626/help/help-to-stock-t3444886

Also what @Hadron said

I have bootloader unlocked but I'm not sure if I still have the stock recovery.
Also I'm sure that I have the correct RUU but it insists that I have the wrong one and the phone has frozen on the same screen again.
EDIT: The recovery steps are also failing, which is why I waited for the battery to drain

Does it still boot like normal? Or what happens?

Also you could try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/des...e-to-pull-ota-metro-pcs-update-phone-t3433790

I think this is flashed by renaming it 0PM9IMG.zip, it goes into the external SD and when you boot into download mode (volume down+power button) it will automatically flash.

It booted normally until after I tried the RUU again, now it only boots to bootloader and download mode, looping on the HTC screen if i try to use recovery or boot normally
In download mode it says that the 0PM9IMG.zip is missing from the external sd, but i'm not sure how I can add the file from the link if I can't boot my phone normally now..
Or is there another way i can access the SD without needing to boot my phone normally? all I can think of is removing it then inserting it into my computer via an adapter, but i've misplaced mine.
EDIT : Found it! I'll try this way then come back if there is a problem.
EDIT2: No luck, I cant find the path that leads to that file(mnt/media_rw/ext_sd/0PM9IMG.zip)

I somehow got this to work, when my screen froze during the update I just restarted the RUU and it continued and finished updating. Thank you for your help!

Is your phone rooted? If so you need to either return fully to stock or find a newer custom ROM.

If not, the question is why you have not been offered an update? So can you tell us more about the phone (model, current software version, whether it was originally sold through a mobile carrier and if so which and whether you are using it on the same network still)?
