Replacement for our "10"

I know I've been posting a lot, but HTC is important to me. I have a Google search set up for "HTC 10" to try and get the up to date information. I just read a few articles that said the same thing. HTC is going to unveil their next phone on May 16th and you can watch it live. Here is the link to get the streaming info:

The page is titled, "Squeeze for the brilliant". It also has a short video showing a hand "squeezing" the phone. I'd rather have a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a metal body than the ability to squeeze my phone. But I guess I'm strange that way.

I'm strange that way too but somehow this year metal means mid-range. High-end flagships have to have glass backs for some reason.

Granted, the glass is very attractive. In the blue HTC U Ultra, it is truly stunning. But in my clumsy hands it just isn't practical. I saw a video where a true drop test was performed on a Samsung Galaxy 7 and an HTC 10. The Samsung stopped working after 3 drops. The "10" was still working after 20. Need I say more. Unless I fall in my head, there won't be a glass body phone in my future.

The HTC U Ultra has the worst drop test results so far. Pieces actually fall out after it cracks. It seems they neglected to laminate the back.

I'm looking at LG this year I like their design language. Reminds me of the 10 but skinnier.

I'm considering the 10 this year, though the S8 is a better size for me (but fragile, and do I trust Samsung long-term, since I don't churn devices annually?). Apart from the display I don't see much advantage of the European G6 over the 10.

My instinct is not to judge the U until I've seen it, but it seems certain it's a 5.5" 16:9 device, and I don't want anything that big (my wife's 10 is a struggle for me to operate one-handed, never mind anything wider - which is why the S8 is in contention), so it's likely that the U won't work for me for that reason, never mind the rest. But I don't think my battery will last until the following generation of devices, so fear I'm going to have to buy at a time when there's no clear choice.

If you're interested in the "10", this is the perfect time to buy it. (On this side of the pond) HTC has dropped the price to $499. If it isn't on sale in your part of the world, what keeps you from buying the unlocked version here? From my understanding(which could be wrong) if I travel to Europe, I can use my phone.

The reason I'm considering a G6 is that it's supposed to be less wide than the 10. I'm over curved screens so Samsung is out. If the G6 is as wide as the 10 I'll have to wait for October.

The G6 is a tad thinner, a bit taller and exactly the same width as the 10.

I agree with you about the curved screen. I use screen protectors and the curve causes problems. I like the larger screen but my eyes aren't what they use to be. You've got to be happy with your phone. Good luck choosing.

The price hasn't been reduced here, but actually once you add taxes, which would be charged on an imported phone, there's no meaningful difference in price (the pre-tax price here is only $20 more than the reduced price over there). If they charged for international shipping you'd be out of pocket. But the real problem is that you'd not have a warranty.

Which is a shame, because the silver model where you are has a black front, whereas here it has a white front (which is basically a "no" for me). My wife already has a black 10, but if I buy one it will have to be the same for me (the red is a bit too much for my daily use).

Of course "slightly thinner" can make a difference when holding it, even when they are the same width, so it's worth trying out anyway. I probably will myself when I see one in a shop, despite what I said earlier, just in case.

(and yeah, despite being announced several weeks earlier than the S8 I've still yet to see a G6 on display, but have played with half a dozen S8s).

It has more information than the previous article and imo is worthwhile reading. Once again you were correct, Hadron about the body being glass. So I guess I will be looking at the G6 too. My concern is that the G6 uses the older 821 chipset, which isn't much faster than the 820 in our "10". So is there reason enough to purchase it as an update to the "10". It probably is closer to being an either/or choice rather than a replacement. And the G6, at least on paper, gives the "10" tough competition. Good luck deciding.

My Desire (just "Desire", the original 2010 flagship) still works. Not metal though.

The last metal phone with a removable battery I can think of was the LG G5 - a device which proved that "metal" and "removable battery" were not sufficient to make a device successful if the design was inadequate.

Now that you mention it, I think my T-bolt is plastic. It was before HTC got fancy. Lol

The One S was pretty fancy for its time. If it hadn't been for the limited storage (16GB, no expansion) I'd probably have bought one myself.

But if you want an early example of "fancy", look at the HTC Legend from 2010 (a contemporary of my Desire): metal unibody and a removable battery.

I agree with you for fancy and the metal case for durability. I didn't know HTC used a metal case back then. What about the Droid DNA for sheer beauty? No metal case, only a hardened rubber.
