It finally recognized the sim card but said that it wasn't from Verizon (true). It still claims no files on sd (sandisk, yes). I took out the Cricket sim and dumped a couple of apps, including Dropbox, which I've never used. Then all hell broke loose. I have no idea why, but the vpn wouldn't work, then came on by itself I guess, and Firefox keeps pulling this "secure connection failed" stuff. It was trying to dissuade me from going to this site, and it won't show the latest postings. I can't get near Memory Zone, and as if that weren't enough, it's now rejecting the charger, which has worked, if slowly. I paid about 7 bucks for it at a convenience store. What the heck is wrong with this thing (S5)?

it is an s5!!!!

it came out in 2014!!!!!

phones have been by design to last as long as the battery.....which a typical lithium-ion battery will last about 3-4 years. anything after that do not expect much out of it. and always anticipate that one day the phone will die on you....so always backup accordingly. also keep in mind that apps will only support certain android os's for a certain amount of time. as the os gets older, the devs usually will move on and not support them any more. so at some point, most of your apps currently will no longer get support and may not work properly (this might be happening to your phone now).

maybe try doing a factory reset....or try clearing cache (and even data) for the affected apps and uninstall and re-install them.

What VPN are you using? It could be the VPN is interfering with the Firefox HTTPS secure connetions? Especially if it's a "free" VPN that inserts ads, logs your data, etc.

I usually recommend Astrill VPN at the moment. https://www.astrill.com/

Of course I can't really help you with Verizon or Cricket SIMs as I"m not in the US.

My S5 sits in its retirement rocking chair on the desk which is sadly where it belongs these days. It was a great phone for the 5 or so years I used it but last year it was finally time to put it out to pasture in favor of an S9.
So between its age, apparent hardware issues and playing musical SIM's, this is not going to end well.

I took it apart and left it that way for hours. When I reassembled it all the problems seemed to be fixed except that it had the wrong time, day, and year (!) as well as the SD thing. At least it finally accepted the charger, which is how I am able to put this on here now. I don't know why it would kick me off AF but it was a simple fix to log in again. I will now attempt to download Memory Zone. Wish me luck...I'm gonna need it.

You may be right, but "moving on" costs money, and that's in short supply. I don't really need all the bells and whistles, just something that works and isn't too delicate. A decent camera would be a plus. I don't know how long I would have to save up, and I probably wouldn't be able to buy online, just irl. People with ideas on how to do this locally are certainly welcome to comment.

Your situation is understandable and not all that uncommon, however it doesn't change the fact that you have a device that is becoming more outdated by the day, plus it appears to be somewhat broken. Depending on what version S5 it is the latest Android version it could have would be 6 which is pretty old at this point and no longer supported by many apps, plus it's way behind on security updates.
As for buying locally we would need to know exactly where "local" is. If you're in the US as I believe you are, Swappa now has options for local transactions on some purchases so you may want to take a look there. The seller's location is always given in the listings and some of them offer local sales, even if they don't it may be possible to request this. There are lots of good deals on Swappa for recent model devices and it's probably the safest place to buy a used phone.

Dropbox is it really easy to use, all you do is drop in your file transfer to your comp and really easy to log in . That should not be the problem anyways.
Could be the cell phone itself.

I've never used dropbox. I'm not sure what to with it. That's why I decided to delete it in particular in order to make room for Memory Zone. What I'd really like to get rid of is all that useless googoo crap I hate but that's another problem for another (rooted) day. At least the new sd seems to be working well.

Dude drop box is basically same thing as cloud.
You can do the same dance, but it is highly protective though. You totally missed on my point on Dropbox. Useless goo on the OS or is it something similar?

I don't really do much cloud stuff. What I meant about googoo is all that play store, hangouts, etc. that I rarely if ever use but is apparently superglued into the phone by God knows who. It seems only rooting can take care of this, and I have had very little luck with that.
Google you mean by that, you should intaken by itself, instead of chasing a wild ghost, or do the usb thing with your comp and just dump everything in that way, and work with your problem.

But keep in mind by rooting away something that is easily unavoidable you are in Ultra effing high risk, of not having everything that is on your phone, so would you just leave it be?
