Broken Screen on HTC Droid Eris

Did you get any kind of insurance on it? I know the Verizon insurance covers accidental damage, so you would be covered. Best Buy's insurance does not (which is why I went with VZW's)...

If you don't have insurance, do a search on this forum for cracked screen or something. I seem to recall a thread in the Droid forum where a guy was trying to figure out if he could order parts and fix it himself.

Lastly, there are places that can fix the screens, but I think it's kinda pricey (I gleaned that info from the same thread in the Droid forum). If I run across the thread I'll post a link here..

If you do not have insurance, try going into the Verizon store and seeing if they will give you a replacement for $50. Some will do it right away, some not at all, and some with some convincing and whining. I've had some of my phones replaced this way. I'm not sure if they will be able to do it on a SmartPhone though.

if you do have the insurance, just so that you are aware, i think the deductible is $75 because its a smartphone, and not the $50 with the regular phones.

I never understood this. A few years back I bought my wife a razr on Ebay. I dropped it off of the counter and the screen went blank. I took it into the store and they gave me a brand new razr for $50. We had no insurance on the phone. Is it really that hit or miss or is there some sort of logic to how they do this?

One thing that's ironically easier/more open with an iPhone is that you can get replacement parts to rebuild the phone pretty easily off ebay -- I got a replacement LCD screen for my wife's water damaged phone for around $30 (everything else was find after it dried out for a week; I just broke the LCD getting it apart before I found a video showing the right way to do it). You can get the touch sensor, glass, covers, etc similarly cheap (everything except the electronic guts).

I guess that's one advantage of a single popular model vs multiple Androids from different manufacturers. I don't see Eris parts, but see replacement LCDs for the Hero for $50; I don't know if they're similar enough inside, or how easy it is to get apart (you can find many videos on taking an iPhone apart).

Hmmm...I better check my Best Buy Black Tie insurance policy on my Eris. The salesman told me that it DID cover accidental damage, hope he was not wrong. If I find out that it does not cover AD, I'll get a policy from SquareTrade. Used them before, and they were great with an iPhone claim.

I dropped my new Droid Eris on a tile floor...it's really cracked up but still works. I have insurance but deductible is $79. I got the phone for FREE because I also bought a Motorolla Droid at the same time. So now I'll end up paying $79 for the phone. Sounds like a racket to me. I don't see why they can't make a tempered glass for this phone. I was planning to get a cover for it, but dropped it before I had a chance....just got it two weeks ago. Cover should come WITH this phone. I don't know anybody who has never dropped a phone before. Customer ripoff.

Lmao really? I forgot Verizon is "supposed" to know you are going to drop it.

I have my eris for sale with broken glass (perfect LCD) and eveything else is perfect too. I'm selling it around $80ish... let me know if you want/need it, phone works flawlessly with it's cracked glass, no pieces are missing, battery, body, camera, speakers, microphones, etc is nearly perfect. Just so you all know, if you break the screen and do not have insurance (like myself, boo!) Verizon will not replace the phone for $50 or $75. I was told that even with insurance the deductable is 89.99 (which is what I paid originally for the phone).

If you are like me and did not purchase the insurance and your phone does a face-plant, unfortunately Verizon won't do much for you. You can either buy the phone at full retail price (somewhere around $450!) or by a certified pre-owned for around $179 (they will ship it to you overnight for free).

I ended up going with the latter which is a bummer considering I have only had the phone for three months and they just stopped selling it.

Does anyone happen to know if there is a skin that actually protects the screen?

try otterbox.com ... they usually have great case that are very durable and protect very well ... i would get one but they do make the phone a tad thicker (only real drawback)

i personally go naked and have had no problems even after multiple drops and (sometimes whilst very mad) throwing it across the room a few times ... the wall got hurt more than the phone did once haha dad wasnt happy bout that :p...

but wasnt too hard to fix
