Jeez guys, talk about a tempest in a teacup.

The Samsung flip phones were rock solid. Samsung can and usually does make really great stuff. They're one of the leaders in the world market for a reason.

In many ways, the Moment dropped the ball. No question.

But when it comes out, I'll encourage my wife to upgrade from her Moment (on her second one, and I wonder if a third isn't in the works....) to the SGSPro. She doesn't like my Evo and she wants a slide-out keyboard.

Our brand faith hasn't been shaken by one bad one in the bunch of Sammy tech we've owned.

Personally, I'm glad Sprint's embracing the SGS tech. It gives people with preferences like my wife an option and it will protect the EVO image - people won't be required to take it or leave it as their only 4G choice and then not like it because it doesn't suit their preferences or needs.

Different brand, different form factor, different UI out of the box.

Srsly - where's the real debate?

Have you tried some of Samsung's mid-tiered offerings on Sprint? Rant brings nightmares to mind. I thought I had issues with lockups on the Moment, but with the Rant, within 30 days we returned that beast twice and then gave it back permanently. The Rant 2 did little to improve.

If you have had good luck with them personally, I'm happy for you. But my experience with them (and my family's) tells me to be gun shy.

It's like quizno's.... I'm sure most folks that have eaten there have had an enjoyable experience, I've gotten food poisoning from one before, so I've never gone back since.

Back on topic....

I'm certain I'll pick one up, but it may be to just resell it. If it has world phone capabilities, I may have second thoughts

wow you all make threads so fast. need to take it easy on the new thread button

but evo. I dont need a qwerty slider, i prefer the slate, feels like it would last longer/more solid. All ive ever owned in the past has been sliders and they never hold up very long, too many moving parts and too much to go wrong, end up feeling flimsy and get that oreo effect

id be a harder decision for me between the regular glaxy s without the keyboard but Id stuill choose evo, these samsungs are so plastic-y, feel cheap, look cheap. I HATE the feeling of a cheap phone in your hand (blame the pre)
Just switched to the evo from the pre and am happy! My pre was a beast though! If it wasn't for the 4g and hd camera, I would have stayed with it!

I might get the epic if a good case with a kickstand comes out. Hopefully a case would make it feel more sturdy. The videos of the epic are saying it's really light and not as solid as the epic. I prefer heavier phones over lighter ones. The extra weight is a small price to pay for the increased manliness :0. On a serious note, I think HTC blew it by not having enough Evos available around the launch. Now more people are considering the epic as we inch closer to it's eminent release. The word "Samsung" is basically the only thing that's making people think twice. Don't screw this up Sammy! We're all counting on you! The only way the epic can lose is if you let it!

yeah, that whopping 1mm of thickness.

I'm thinking of passing my Evo along and picking up the Epic. I get tired of having the wrong corrections go out in texts and emails because I'mso used to typing accurately with a hard keyboard and not relying on the auto correct to make up for innacurate soft key typing.

But it comes down to email. If I have to use K9 to get imap support than I'll have to pass. Email just sucks on android. One of the things I miss about webOS.
I am disappointed that it has a physical keyboard. I love my evo but my GF is looking for something a bit smaller. Physical keyboards just add unnecessary bulk.

I have 7 email accounts hooked up through the default email client using IMAP, and it works flawlessly.

I like the hard keys but the EVO is just a beast compared to the EPIC. EVO for me!

Come on people! Lets not talk like those iphone fanboys! Saying the Evo is a "beast" is not a legitimate argument. Give details as to why the Evo is a "beast." Example: The Evo is a beast compared to the Epic because it is animal other than a human, especially a large four-footed mammal.

Well since you got the restraining order I've lost track of your daily habits. ;-)

I'm on the go all day. I need to "manage" my email from my phone, not just check it. The fact that stock android email is so limited is just laughable. I still had to use moxier to completely sync my exchange account. Gmail is still the "darling" and gets all the additional functionality. Should be one email program to handle all accounts with full functionality. And the ability to have black text on a white background would be nice.

It's the one area I miss webOS. And I could check email on my phone ever since I got my kyo 6035. In 2010 I expect a smartphone to be able to fully "manage" my email sans a computer.
Really have no need for that personally, as you know, I use a computer daily.

I'm going to wait and see. I'd hate to give up the extra .3", but if it does all sorts of things better than the Evo (especially take pics & video and web browsing), it's kind of a no-brainer.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed, but I noticed that the spec list for the Epic is slightly different from the Vibrant -- the Epic has FF Camera and LED flash, but only 1GB internal memory instead of the Vibrant's 16GB. OTOH, it comes with a clean 16GB memory card, whereas the 2GB memory card from T-Mobile is mostly used up by a DRM'd copy of Avatar (on a side note, the Vibrant can have up to 48GB of total storage -- that's gotta be a new record).

Wait and see here as well.

I like the thought of the Galaxy S series phones but there are reports of touchwiz lag (not a big deal.... load a 3rd party launcher) and of poor GPS performance on the GSM versions... the gps is a show stopper for me. I do also think HTC devices have a more active deloper community then Samsung does... that may change once the Galaxy S series rolls out across all carriers but at this point in time HTC has the edge here.

So for me the big thing on these is wait and see... see if the developers can hack em, wait and see if samsung fixes stuff.

Evo for me. Reason, Samsung :(.. nuff said!

Yeah, my last Samsung was the worst. The original Iphone killer (Instinct) was terrible. I went through 5 of them and each of no fault of my own. The screen would just give out and start acting weird. Once it happened within 2 months of me getting a new one. My iphone friends used to laugh at the instinct when i pulled it out. Now with the Evo, they all look amazed at it.

Edit, wow i just forgot. A coworker of mine has a Samsung phone and guess what? He screen just started acting up as well. Now her phone is useless.

TouchWiz tries way to hard to mimic iOS for my tastes. The device looks quite nice though. I love the screen on the epic, but unless you have them side by side no one would say that the evo is any less brilliant. I do wish the evo would get an update to fix the 720p video compression(upping it to H264 from H263), but I mainly just use the still camera and the EVO's camera is superior compared to galaxy S shots that I have seen.
All in all I love my EVO, but if you can look past the clunky Touchwiz UI and lack of a flash either device is sufficient to give you your android jollies.

Guys who really is going to get firmware updates from Sammy/Sprint? Most of us in this forum will probably root any of the two phones they get. If i got the Evo i would root it like that, Epic, same thing

And this all sounds like a sibling rivalry. the evo and epic are like: "Na na na boo boo, Im better than you!", "No I am!",.

But then both of them team up to take down the iphone 4

Thats how i see both these phones.

STUPID poll because the epic has not been released, yes we have the spec's etc, but who knows what it feels like in the hand?, and if the specs will be the same as listed? how good the screen is? how heavy is it? what the battery life like!!!!,Build quality etc etc etc

EVO because its real, live and in person

Based on what we know so far about the epic and the similarities between the epic and other samsung galaxy smartphones that have already been released (vibrant, captivate), I thought it might be a good idea to see what peoples' opinions were based on the info they have about both phones SO FAR. I'm sure many people will change their minds when they get hands on time with both device but for now, I thought it might be a good idea for people to start thinking about the pluses and minuses of both phones based on the information that is readily available to us.

I just checked out the Samsung Vibrant and Captivate reviews from engadget and I'm not impressed. I was thinking about getting the epic but considering how similar it is too the other galaxy s phones, I'm leaning back towards the Evo.
Engadget's pros:
1.Amazing display
2. Thin and sexy
3. Froyo is a promised upgrade

Engadget's cons:
1.Uninspired UI skin
2. Seems slow considering processor
3. Questionable battery life

Captivate and Vibrant Scorecard: 7/10
HTC Evo Scorecard: 9/10

I played with an epic yesterday.

In short, better screen, better camera, better hd recording, insane GPU.

No amount of devs of a strong community will change these things on our evos. HTC really screwed us with a dated 65,000 color screen and HD recording thats not even HD at all and is on par with a blackberry pearl. GPU speaks for itself. 90million/sec vs 22million/sec.

I've had my evo since launch with ZERO flaws and I will be getting the epic. I was gonna stay true to my evo but things happened and I got to play with a better phone yesterday. Bash it all you want because its a samsung but the things I pointed out are enough to sell me away from my beloved evo. .3 more real estate is barely noticeable.
