Desire Firmware OTA Update

i got the orange one because i wanted a black desire..

unlocked and unbranded it.. works a treat :)

just need to keep my eyes peeled for a completely black back, minus the orange logo!

If you find one, you let me know!

I'd go for the case amte one, but I want the HTC official one and I'll pay the premium for it!

How about myself? I debranded, updated, got locked out of my phone (because I'm with Orange) and unlocked.

So, now I'm unlocked and debranded. I should be pretty set now, eh? When 2.2 comes I can update without issues?

I dont get one thing. Why do u need the goldcard to update once of u hv unlocked the phone, debranded it? When u hv unlocked and debranded the phone, doesnt it become like a normal sim free phone?
I asked this question on one of the Modaco forums and the answer was that even when you have debranded a phone by 'upgrading' to a generic ROM there is still something remaining that identifies it as having been supplied by one of the mobile operators. Therefore it won't accept a generic (HTC) OTA upgrade, nor will it accept the original operator one because it's no longer running their ROM. You have to install future upgrades using the goldcard method.

Hey all,

Seriously confused noob here!

Firstly checking whether phone is branded - I assume mine is as I bought it from 3 and it has the 3 logo on start up etc.

If branded can I only accept software updates from my network provider's (3) website and NOT the HTC website itself?

What about the software update feature under:

Settings>About Phone>System Sofware Updates - is this redundant?

Current versions im using:

Firmware: 2.1-update1
Software 1.22.771.1

Are these still up-to-date?

Finally any ideas when Froyo is out, and again will I have to source this from my network provider specifically?

Many thanks,

J

If you're fed up of waiting you can always apply the update yourself. Did mine last night and it has seriously helped increase the headphone volume output on my TMobile Desire. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who has debranded or rooted etc but for the rest....

It does wipe all settings and data (as a factory reset would but including wiping the sd card I think) so a backup is a good idea. I backed everything I needed up then put a blank SD card in the phone for the update (or you could just make a copy of your SD card and copy it back across when the update has finished I suppose, you'd probably want to do this before gong through the intial settings screens as it asks you very early on if you want to restore).

Then just download the correct one for your provider, run, connect phone, follow on screen prompts. Easy as that.

Updates can be found here:

Obviously you do this at your own risk, I will not hold any responsibility for cock ups but it really is a straight forward process so I can't see as there's much to go wrong.

I think what happens is when the new software comes out Three get it and brand it then give it back to HTC to distribute via software update.

I didn't realize Three had started branding now. I know they were three ROMs about. Glad I got mine when I did.

HI,
I am awaiting delivery of a vodafone desire and will be asking them to unlock it for me. I intend to run a 3 mobile sim card in the desire and hopefully use skype on the handset. I have the skype attachment I got from this site.
Is anyone running skype on a 3 sim on a de branded mobile pleaselet me know if you are?

Thanks
Mat:)

Matt, the Voda Desire isn't locked to the network. You can use any SIM you want. There's no annoying branding either.

All's good in the world of HTC
