Spoke to Verizon about Eris battery life

so i have been reading these forums for a while now, and i decided to report about my battery life. right now my phone is showing a 6% awake time...i am not a heavy user of the phone, but i would say moderate, lots of texting etc...i took my phone off the charger yesterday at like 10am and by 10pm i still had 80% battery life.

my settings are as follows:
bluetooth: off until i need it
wifi: off until i need it
wireless data: always on
gmail: auto sync
mail: as items arrive
gps: off until i need it.
location services: use wireless networks, i have the "allow network to detect your position" off

i hope this helps some people. btw i took my phone off the charger at 6am today, it is now 10:45 and i am still showing 100% charge.
I wonder how much battery you are saving with the location services disabled. do you have checked enable always on mobile network setting

regardless, Verizon has to approve the update. Any update being released, downloaded, or shot OTA, if it is in any way "official" verizon must approve it.

This is usually the big hold up on stuff like this. Same way BB's work. RIM works on a new OS or update, bounces it off of verizon, verizon ok's it, RIM puts it up on thier site for download OR verizon shoots it OTA

Did Verizon approve the 5.0 OS update for the Blacberry Storm? I know I got that from Blackberry and not Verizon.

I agree with you, but we are getting off topic. I do know that Verizon has nothing to do with the say so or design of the 2.0 update. Maybe they will have some sort of say as to when they can release the update. But at this point, the cool thing is the documents that Bravo posted seem to verify what the tech I spoke with said. They show 2 release dates for updates for the Eris - one on 12/11 and one on 1/22. The tech said the 2.0 update would be coming in the next few weeks (he accentuated with "very very soon") and that a fix update would be coming from Verizon within the first 3 weeks of January - which would be the updates on 1/22. So I am fairly confident that the tech was accurate in what he told me, and I expect 2.0 on December 11. Also, the Hero update is in no way applicable to what we will be receiving, as we have had those functions since launch. That update was to bring the Hero some of the fixes we already have.

The BlackBerry updates that you guys are referring to had to be approved by Verizon because they directly effected the software side of the radio in the devices. This is why some of the "leaks" that people tried would lead to horrible connection problems sometimes. This is also the reason that Verizon stopped or refused some of the updates. As it stands, 5.0 is available for the 8330 Curve, but Verizon has not released (that I know of) because it caused too many problems. I don't know if the update to Android 2.0 would directly effect the radio or not. This would be a reason for Verizon to be involved with the update. I read that the Hero update came from HTC and not Sprint though.

Either way, getting 2.0 and Google Nav will only make a great phone even better at this point.

The release may come from HTC's website but I am fairly certain Verizon wouldn't allow and support a release without testing and approving first.

Actually, while I generally agree with this statement (BlackBerry's, Windows Mobile, Brew Devices)...with Android, I would believe that this might be different. Verizon seems to have taken this whole Open Development thing pretty seriously, and the ONLY Verizon "app" that came on this phone was the horrible Visual Voice Mail app (which doesnt even push audio through the earpiece). Having had Verizon phones for 15 years now, this is the first device I have purchased from them that didnt have the "Verizon" stamp on it....

My GUESS, HTC pushes out a 1.6 Donut update which includes the current Verizon fixes....with a January update to 2.0 with the remaining bugs worked out...

We are kinda getting of topic but it may be good we hash this out, just 'cause, even if ti is just our opinions :p

Yes verizon did take a hand off approach when it came to the droids that were released. They will probably stay hands off with them, but I imo it is silly to think that verizon would allow a phone update on their service without seeing what it does and giving it a approval.

Hey, if it helps the release date come faster, I don't care if they don't even know what it's called. :p

I believe HTC has already said that they won't bother messing with 1.6 now that 2.0 is out.

HTC has made a point of stressing that they will NOT be porting Sense UI to 1.6. They weren't working on it before 2.0, but they realize that 2.0 is too big of an update to the core frameworks to NOT prepare Sense for it. They have announced that they are releasing it, not when.

Not trying to get into a big thing here, but the Sense 2.0 would not be a Verizon update. Sense is a HTC customization ROM of Android. The same way that they dont request Sprint's permission to update Sense now, I don't think they are going to have to request permission from Sprint and Verizon when they update their own software. It would be the bug fix update that would be coming from both HTC + Verizon, not the Sense. Just because HTC released an Android phone on the Verizon network, Verizon didn't suddenly gain any rights to making decisions for the Sense UI.

A 2.0 update would be far more than just a sense update. A 2.0 Update would update the entire android OS and a new version of the sense UI compatible with Android 2.0. IMHO it would make no sense what so ever to update the entire OS on 12/11 and already have a maintenance release scheduled for 5 weeks later. It would make much more sense to patch the current issues on 12/11 and roll out the full 2.0 upgrade on 11/22. Just my $.02, I have no inside knowledge what so ever.

You could be right. I'm just saying, the Verizon tech rep told me 2.0 in december, maintenace in january and the document posted earlier seems to point at an update on 12/11 and an update on 1/22. I doubt anyone on these forums knows the right answer, but at the least I am pretty confident we are going to see 2 updates between now and January 22, and one is going to be 2.0 and one of them is going to be a maintenance update to fix various problems including battery life.

OT but I can't find a way to close apps, where is this? Manage applications just lets you uninstall.

Not sure if you got an answer to this: Settings-->Applications-->Manage applications-->scroll to app(s) you want to close and open--->Once open, scroll down and click "force close". You can also press menu while in the "manage apps" screen and it will allow you to filter by "only apps that are running".

I have been using Automatic Task Killer with no problems at all. You set up once with the programs that you would like it to close. After that every time the screen is shut off those programs are automatically closed. My awake time sits between 9 and 15 percent since I started using and my battery has been lasting much better.

As other people have reported on this forum, I also felt that ATK was causing performance and battery issues, so I uninstalled.
Been using it since day one. I can't really account for how much life I get because I don't pay attention to that. lol
Took my phone off the charge at 12:30 today, and its meter is still all the way up.

Regarding who knows what about an update, here's what a HTC support person wrote me:

I understand how important it is to have the latest updates for your device. For a ROM update to be released for a phone, the carrier must first request that update. Thus, if Verizon requests that Android 2.0 be made available for your Droid Eris, the update will be released. Should an update become available for your device, it will be found at the Support page for your device at www.htc.com/us.
Since this told me nothing, I pressed him further and got this:

I understand your need to know whether or not this update has been requested or not. At HTC Technical Support, we do not have information as to whether or not the update has been requested yet. You may wish to ask Verizon this, as they would have more information at this time. While the 1.5 software is not the newest, it is far from being out of date. From all the information I have gathered, it seems like the biggest stepping stone is integrating the Sense user interface in with the 2.0 software. As I do not have an exact ETA for such an update, I would once again suggest contacting Verizon to try and get a handle on their plans.

Sheesh. So much for living in the "information age"

same here, wouldn't surprise me if half the people complaining about battery issues are using atk. I'm not sure what the problem is but it seems to bog everything down regardless of how much you kill. My phone runs better with more apps installed and running then with just a few things and it.
