Root CyanogenMod 5.0.7 (Android 2.1) on post e911 magic

for those of us already on cm5 and want to try out cm6 do we just start from the bit that explains how to install cm6 or do we need to do anything before that?

Yep, just start from where it explains updating to CM6. If you get into problems or something on CM6 that you need is not working, all you'll have to do is restore the Nand backup that you created. I actually have created a Nand backup for CM5 and CM6 so I can switch between them in a few minutes.

If you have CM5 setup to backup your data and apps to Google, you'll find that after installing CM6 the phone will almost set itself up for you.

i didnt know about the backing up apps to google thing..how do you set it up?

Not sure after the fact, but when you first do the fresh setup on 2.1 system it asks you if you want to backup your data and apps to Google. I had selected yes when I setup CM5. After the setup of CM6 and logging into my gmail account, everything synced up including my wallpaper.

Go in Setting/Privacy.
Check "Back up my data" to backup your apps and settings in your google account on synchs.
Check "Automatic Restore" so that next time you setup your google account (after a wipe or a factory reset) it will pull all your settings and install your apps when it synchs back with the server.

well i have the back up my data checkbox but not the automatic restore checkbox..its not a huge deal since ive got an app that already does it for me but we'll see when i install a proper release of cm6

I just got a post E911 Dream from a friend and I have been following your guide: Rogers post E911 Magic to CM 5.0.7 (Android 2.1) with Dream E911 Radio The GreatBigDog Report

Trying to do a post-E911 Dream as well, but the RUU exe doesn't work here. It claims to not be able to find the phone at all. Did you run into this problem as well?

Alternatively, does anybody have the extracted nbh etc from that RUU exe? (I'm entirely on Linux, and had to temporarily borrow a friend's windows machine for it).

That RUU as well as the guide are for the Magic. Currently there is no way to break the perfected SPL on the Dream if it has the E911 patch applied.

Ah, I was just directed to it by a friend, noting that it might work.

JTAG next week then, when I'm back at home and not travelling for conferences. Following your general concept there, you just found a newer legitimate update that WOULD apply, and wasn't actually blocking flash_image.

That is correct.

okay so now i'm running 2.1 on my magic but i have a quick question...
with 1.5, i had the option of disabling "always on" in the mobile network settings. disabling always on gave me a significantly better battery life and also my 3g wouldn't be connected all the time.
i can't find this feature in 2.1, unless it is the "enable background data" but then i disables the market:S

can anyone elaborate?

Updated my op (Update 3). I wrote an update script that should hopefully make for a painless root and CM install for both the Dream and Magic

gbd

So I tried out your script on my unrooted HTC Magic (post 911 fix).

After it said DEVICE FOUND, it kicked be back to cmd prompt, so I started following Procedure.txt from Step 3.

I got to step 8 f) without any issues, but upon executing 8f I started getting (Out of memory) errors as such:

$ flash_image recovery /data/local/recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img
flash_image recovery /data/local/recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img
mtd: read error at 0x00000000 (Out of memory)
---snipped for space---
error writing recovery: No space left on device
$
Then my phone rebooted itself. What should I do from here?

EDIT: May cmd window mark chopped off part of the command, so I added it back in

EDIT2: Looks like after I cleaned up some junk on my SD card, I no longer run out of memory. continuing on ...

EDIT3: Step 14a gave me the following error:
D:\RogersRoot>adb devices
List of devices attached
000000000000 recovery

D:\RogersRoot>adb reboot bootloader
error: closed
My phone is sitting in Android system recovery ... what now? :D

EDIT4: I looked ahead in the instructions and saw that I needed to get into fastboot mode, so I did and I'm not continuing from there ...

EDIT5: Got to step 19 ... rebooting now!

So despite the few hiccups I'm not fully rooted and running 5.0.7 (yay!).

Few quick questions that I'm sure I could find answers for with some googling and searching ... but I'm hoping someone will just have quick answers so I can be lazy.

1) If I wanted to switch to a new rom (like say CM6) what steps (and what order) do I need to do? Can I just flash the new rom? Or do I have to flash the new rom, then some other stuff? Or Flash the radio, then new rom, then other stuff ... etc.

2) The default keyboard is terrible. Since it seems like I'm too late to get in on the swype action (unless someone knows where to get the apk all hush hush), is there an apk floating around for the HTC sense keyboard?

3) Is the camera included in 5.0.7 the default one for 2.1? Because it's terrible. Anyone have a non-gimmick camera app recommendation? (Retro Camera is a great gimmick camera app btw)

Oh and thanks so much for GBD for all your work on this. I feel like I have a brand new phone!

1) Best to follow the ROM maker of your choosing's directions. But keep in mind that our Rogers Magics are an Ebi1 device, so there is an additional kernel port for most roms to flash.

2) I hear SlideIT is pretty much as good, I think there are another one or two apps with the same idea available too. I am lucky enough to be in the beta for swype myself :D

3) I think our camera hardware just sucks, as none of the camera apps I have used seemed to be very good. That being said I use FxCamera and while it has some gimmicky modes, it's normal photo mode seems to work ok.

In regards to item 2, I believe that swipe is in open beta now. Anyone should be able to get in on it.

Wow, you're fast. :)

I read your comment in the 2.1 update thread about your concerns the Rogers update will lock the back door currently in use by the rooting community. I've been debating a CM5/6 change for a while, and this may push me over the edge. I like Sense, but I also like options.

Options are good :)
