As a former Instinct Owner and Moment owner....No Samsung for me. The phone business is just some side business for Samsung. HTC is a phone manufacturer....period. It is what pays their bills. They Have to perform and their performance does not get lost or diluted in the balance sheet of a giant comglomerate.

Anyway, THE number one warning sign is that it is launching with 2.1. That is weak!!! And THAT is exactly what they did with the Moment. They launched with 1.5 when 1.6 had been out for months. And then it took us months to get to 2.1!!! That just shows me that Samsung is really not interested in developing and supporting a top-of-the-line phone. HTC has bent over backwards trying to keep Evo owners happy. Some would argue they haven't bent far enough...but they are sure as hell trying. Who got an update the before the phone was even launched??? Then we got an update a few weeks after launch to address initial issues. ANd who got 2.2 first(After of course the people that make the software)??? We did. ACTIONS!!! HTC is on it....Samsung has never proved that they are ON IT!!! And I really don't expect them to.

This is true. However, the fact that it's Gorilla Glass does not make it immune or scratches or shattering. FWIW, the Evo glass is probably just as scratch resistant.

How about the fact that the first Galaxy S phones were released in Europe in the beginning of June and GPS problems were known at the time? If there is actually a fix in Sept, then that means it will have taken them three months for a pretty big issue. HTC released a battery fix within weeks and 2.2 in two months. If that's any sort of comparison, it does not make Samsung look any more responsive than they have in the past.

But when will the 2.2 upgrade come? They have thrown out some vague date for the Captivate and Vibrant, but keep in mind that the Epic is not running the same version of Touchwiz and therefore needs a different update than the other phones. I would not be surprised if 2.2 doesn't come until next year. I would be shocked if it came before Gingerbread. Maybe Evo will have Gingerbread before the Epic gets 2.2. Would not shock me.

How is this statement even remotely correct? The Evo clearly has the biggest dev base for Android, and there are multiple custom ROMs, kernels, and whatnot available right now. There are no custom ROMs for US Galaxy phones. Most phones get rooted before they're released or just thereafter. Even the Moto X got rooted. That means nothing these days.

From what I've read, that is completely backwards. Hero owners are on the whole much happier than Moment owners.

No, it hasn't. Until someone uses a GPS analysis program that shows the number of satellites locked and the accuracy of the position, it is not proven. If you turn off cell tower assisted on the Epic, the GPS sucks. If you need cell tower assistance like Engadget was told to enable by Samsung, it means GPS is still broken.

So it's slightly bigger but has a smaller screen? I'll take the larger screen and the smaller size, thank you very much.

I'll also take the screen that isn't tinted blue and makes whites look bluish. I'll take the one without the Pentile Matrix screen so text is crisp up close. I'll also take the screen with responsive capacitive buttons.

The Epic 4G is a great phone and will make Android the mobile OS with the biggest guns in the smartphone landscape. If you fell in love with the look of SAMOLED or want a Hummingbird processor or want a hard keyboard badly or just felt burned in some way by the Evo, I would never begrudge anyone their choice. It's all good AFAIC.

But please, stop spouting fanboy nonsense.

In addition to all of this I'll take the phone that has the better cut and paste. I own the EVO and my friend just picked up the Epic. Honestly the phone is fast and truly looks great, but touch wiz is a miss for me. As was mentioned yesterday, you can turn touch wiz off, but you wouldn't want to....

I found simply long pressing on a picture and either saving it or sharing it was a breeze on my EVO; however my friends EPIC just couldn't do it. There are no long presses, no real menu options or anything of the sort (for this senerio). For those of you that say otherwise give it a try... I was only able to send a link to my recipient. I was amazed at how this one feature was lacking. I was a bit envious at first, but the more I look over at his epic the more I become satisfied with my decision to keep my EVO. Again, this may not be your decision, but it was mine. I don't need a keyboard and even though my buddy claimed he could really use it he's been stuck on Vlingo and sending text messages that way. So they'll get the Samsung Hub, honestly what is the hub bub (sorry had to) about it.... seriously want me to rent movies that I may or may not ever get to fully watch... Plus... Netflix being on the horizon will kill what ever Samsung has to offer and was hulu plus gonna make it over too?

What this is going to boil down to is whats your posien.... Which form factor is most appealing.

If by "better" you mean "bigger," then yes its "better." But I doubt anybody would pass on a samoled screen for the Evo.
That means that no one will buy the Evo anymore because the SAMOLED screen is so magical.

I doubt that will be the case.

Plus, if SAMOLED is so mind blowing, why didn't anyone jump ship to the Vibrant or Captivate already? Obviously, the screen itself is just a piece of the puzzle. No one buys a phone just for the screen. Well, okay, maybe iPhone 4 owners.

The Galaxy owners talk about their SAMOLED screens like the iPhone 4 owners with the Retina Screen. In both cases, they're nice but have drawbacks. But if you listen to them, you'd think we're all going blind looking at LCD screens. Overblown and overhyped.

I just meant most people would prefer a 4.3 inch samoled rather than a tft display. The Evo's screen isn't a slouch and neither is the epic's. Both have their pluses and minuses.
how about anybody that works outside?............
Honestly, no screen is going to look too great in direct sunlight

I'm really tired of these Evo vs Epic threads. They're both great phones. Why can't we just leave it at that.

I am. I was all hyped all summer for the Epic. Waiting like everyone else for pricing and a release date. We got that...yippie for all. Then 8-31-10 came and I got the Epic day 1. I returned it the next day. Keep in mind I had the instinct when it came out and returned it within 2 weeks. I then got the hero and enjoyed it...except headphone jack problems and speaker...so exchanged it for the moment...loved the moment until all the lock ups and restarts and 20 min to make a call.

So back to current I got the epic...screen is pretty and its fast. Faster then the moment. But that touch wiz had the instinct taste and yes you could turn it off...so yes I am passing up on super amorled for the evo.

Not much promotion for the epic...yes you can watch movies...but you can download a player to play divx...also netflix is coming...why pay or rent movies.... so now I am back to the moment until my evo comes....

Samsung I tried 3 times...htc like I said has claimed another.

Returning something the next day(if you even did what you claimed) is hardly trying, and it seems your only complaint is touchwiz which can be disabled.

Yeah your post = grain of salt.

Yeah, I took a look at the epic yesterday at a sprint store and while the screen was better than the evo it was not overwhelmingly better. I really don't see the difference between it and the incredible as well, although i did not look at them side by side, my brother has one and it looks very similar in color and saturation, incredible has amoled, so not sure what is super about the epic screen. I watched the avatar trailer hd which would favor the epic and some other hd videos on youtube side by side with the epic and the evo and if i had not bought the evo already i would still take the larger screen and thiner form over the epics color, to me it was sometimes too dark as well. And the epic has a different you tube app as well, you have to hit menu, settings, watch in hq every time which gets annoying. And the touch buttons were not very responsive, had to keep rehitting them to get them to register. not to mention touch wiz was a little laggey, granted i use launcher pro on the evo, sense still runs underneath it, i still like the email app, people and other functions of sense like copy and paste.
So I am guessing touch Wiz will also run under launcher pro, so unless you put a clean custom rom you can't completely get rid of it. The only reason i see to go with the epic over the evo is if you need a keyboard or if you are going to play a lot of 3d games. From what i have read around the internet the hummingbird processor works very well with all the emulators out there, the evo struggles with the psx emulator even while over-clocking from first hand experience, but i really don't use it that often so not a factor for me. Plus the kick stand, i use it all the time and actually wished my last phone, the diamond, had one, so i am very happy with it, makes it such a better experience watching videos especially with other people.

Why would I lie? I returned it. Touch wiz was not my only complaint and I did mention that I know it could be turned off...the keyboard...to me the moments keyboard is better...how about the crackeling speaker or the non responsive captive buttons...I am sorry for posting. I am not trolling...this is my first post on the evo side. Why do you feel you need to judge? I don't judge you...I just posted and replieded to a forum post.

So yes I did honestly try it out...to me 24 hours is more then fair after dealing with the moment.

Actually, I dont mean anything by it. I was just stating what some reviewers have said.

Samsung Epic 4G vs. HTC EVO 4G - Yahoo! News

And it does seem that most (not all) reviews give the edge to the Evo overall. Either way both are top 5 phones and both are on Sprint running Android.

Exactly! I owned the failure that was the "Instinct" and got suckered into buying a "Intercept" which I returned in three weeks. I reactivated mt Palm Pre (great phone), and waited to get an EVO... a vastly superior device. I will NEVER own another Samsung phone... period, end of story! Choosing my next phone, when one surpasses the EVO, will be much easier now, as I won't even consider a Samsung product.

I experienced Samsungs level of support when I owned the Moment. I will be avoiding their products in the future even if one of their devices beats my current device specifications in every area.

These devices leap frog each other all the time. Wait a couple of months and you will likely be able to get a HTC device with similar features.

If you think you're in the same boat that you were with the Moment, you should be sadly mistaken. The Moment was a one off, like the Behold II. They could care less about them. All their effort is behind Galaxy S which spans all the carriers. They've also recently said their efforts are behind Android due to its openness and customer drive which is interesting because they were supposedly behind WP7 which seems to be taking a back seat on their end.

I owned the Moment, and I owned the Hero. Both phones sucked compared to the Evo and Epic. Both are lackluster hardware wise. Neither runs 2.1 well. And both will be kicked to the curb quickly. Even talked to someone who said they liked their Intercept better than the Moment. Go figure.

I was one of the people that had no problems with the Evo at all since its release....until I did the 2.2 update rather then rooting to 2.2 prior. Once I updated it I was pissed, (constant resets, flash on camera stopped working, missing texts, weak signals, ##775# disabled to manually apply a good PRL which I was doing on 2.1 and of course allllllll the applications that started working partial or became useless all together. I'm guessing because some of the applications weren't made for Froyo)?

Either way I got fed up, said I'd get a Epic since because of the keyboard, (even though the Evo broke my old habits of NEEDING one), better screen, faster phone, 2.1, (thinking I could do my ##775# again to force roaming), and of course the fact that it had an internal task manager.

I bought it and I can say I after having 4 days. I picked it up, played with it enjoyed it but I put the Evo right back in my hands..

pros
- screen looks like HD although its not as well lit as Evo the colors just look better
-the keyboard is so easy to to type on
-the video recorder seemed better then Evo's
-the phone was definetely snappier then Evo however I never felt like the Evo was slow to begin with
-signal seemed like less bars then Evo side by side
-internal task manager for easier shut down
-RCA output cable "supposed" to be available. when most ppl still dont have HD's then here ya go.

Cons
-Flash player outdated, (not even up to par with 2.1 stock Evo came with) oh and you tube sucked as well
-seems plasticky like a kids phone an extra light, (I like the Evo weight that has more of a device feel)
-charger is on top of the phone so you like foolish in ya car connected with a wire out the top of your ear unless your doing headset or bluetooth)
-capacitive buttons at bottom require to much pressure and just sucked altogether.must tap screen to wake up then press buttons after it dims.
-didnt like Touch Wiz or just to used to Sense

All in all however the Epic is a good phone of choice, IF you havent purchased a 4G phone yet. If I had bought the Epic 1st then I probably would of stuck with it by default. But since already got the Evo I just feel its pointless to have another phone so similiar. Thats my take.

I think I'm gonna sell my Epic on Craigslist while its hot although the Evo is too..Oh yea I forgot to mention I think the fact I just had my Evo rooted helped my decision. Made me care less about the epic being snappier...Whole new world once you start flashing your Evo...
